ooh and i have a q... you'll see a part where i'm doing split time ttn bf is that the 'impossible weave' i'm doing... or something else?

hey man... glad to see you finally made another vid.. I was beginning to think you'd disappeared somewhere..

to be honest.. I'm still unsure what to make of your vid..

you freehand.. which is cool, but apart from that, I'm hardpressed to see where you've changed from your last vid... granted, you flow in this one, so its not move, cut, move, cut, move (which plagues most videos).. but a lot of times that flow is interrupted by unnecessary repetition... The point is you're flowing more, and and that's a plus Sphism/smilesmiley

you have some cool ideas in their infancy in this vid.. I'm really looking forward to see how those develop, since it seems your pushing more in that direction, and away from your previous spinning... I think it will help bring back some of the style you've lost, and ultimately help create a more signature flow.. which is also a plus Sphism/winksmiley

to answer you question, the impossible weave and the butterfly weave are essentially the same thing.. the point comes in over whether you ttn back an forth, or weave with opposite direction poi.. its not an important distinction to worry about... just think of them as minor variations on each other and call it what you like..

ah ok, thanks for the clarification.

and thanks for the critique. i will be working more on this new idea and try to clean it up.

If you want the specifics, there's discussion in the butterfly section on impossible vs bf.. but I don't think its very important, especially with your new style..

to be honest I liked the mixture of ideas, I just think some of the mind game stuff could use some developing, because at this point it won't work with you standing still (not enough effect though a very nice one) and also wont' work with you moving (since your not typically a mover, and I'm not sure if you are at the point where you are comofortable playing those games off different angles)... I haven't seen any of your straight freehand, so I can't say for sure.. right now it looks like your freehand focuses a lot on the front.. I think as your freehand develops to incorporate more turns and angles, so will your games.. I've never been much for freehand, and subsequently I've never been much at games.. but I've always seen the relation..

that's just my thoughts.. take it with a grain of salt if you want..

noone else is posting? what gives? jon is the only other person in the other thread (toxic) that's posting..

no comments from anyone?

hehe.. it's ok and understandable... this IS a poi site... so the parts in between the freehanding and mind games is what people are looking for.

I think I may have commented on HoP if this is the video that was posted on there Sphism/tonguesmiley

actually wil this is spherculism whihc embraces anything sphercular.. whihc includes freehanding, along with mindgames, along with contact juggling, etc.. its just, and I mean this in the most polite way, not a lot of glowstringers get techincal.. and unfortunately here at spherc, we have a tendency to get -REALLY- technical.. I, at least, take pride in that.. (the technical, not the lack of glowstringers..

again, this isnt to say that glowstringers aren't that technical, but they dont' embrace the side of it that we here at spherc tend to.. I regret that we dont have a strong glo populace, because we advocate stringing in all its forms.. whihc is why I encourage as many people to post vids and such here as possible.. In hopes, that perhaps we might turn more people on to it... I just think a lot of people don't give comments, even though they obviously have opinions (which goes for all sites..) I don't think they realise how important a simple 'I liked it' or 'I didnt like it' is to those that post...

 or maybe that's just me..

ah i c, so spherc isn't just for poi exclusively. alright i get that now, but the fact is the level at which you guys talk at, most people can't understand what is going on. especially since the age group for most glowstringers are like 14-17 on avg.

i tried reading the theory section and i was lost so quickly... i'm just not able to understand, probably cause i'm not that smart and am more of a visual person anyways.

but also, the fact that there isn't a lot of glowstringers here tends to make it more of a poi exclusive site, right? which is why my mixture of freehanding into my stringing wasn't really understood, like on homeofpoi. but i'll troll here and hopefully i'll be able to pick some of your guys' conversations up... what was it... the "trinity" move? the hypothectical one that was generated using the computer... that was would be so sick if you could make that type of pattern.

actually.. the tech end of the conversation tends to exclude most everyone... not just glowstringers... the reason we ahve a stronger poi populace rather than glo populace tends to deal not in the age nor competence of the spinners.. it lies instead in the fact that more poi-ple are brought up on places like home of poi, where there isnt a wealth of videos.. and thus you learn to read what others are talking about or you fall behind.. also a lot of poiple don't have access to cams, so it makes it critical that you learn at least rudimentery skills of talking poi, lest you fall out of communication with others.. glostringers, tend to be kids, which have at their disposal a lot fo stuff us adults don't have.. its very common for kids to have their own computers (unlike a lot of us that are forced to share).. Its also common for kids to have a more disposable income.. (highschool and early college..) from what I gathered at one point, these kids pay stupd prices for sticks (ultras) and pay stupid prices for parties -35.. not to mention all these other odd and end 'goodies' that they purchase.. whihc again is something a lot of us don't have.. I for one pay spend a year on glowsticks (if that) and pay / year max to go to the 5+ parties I go to.. and always get my goodies for free.. which is why I don't have access to the funds like you guys do, and the same can be said for a lot of us, umm.. adults.. I guess is what we would be..

the difference being that you guys learn by vid, since almost all of you have one.. and thus dont comprehend any poi talk because you never had to.. its a skill you never needed nor developed..

we try to accomodate things as best as we can.. we have the poidia which defines any term that may confuse you.. and we try as best we can to supplement as many ideas as possible with video.. unfortunately getting a clear and precise video also takes time.. whihc is another feature a lot of us have..

so I'm sorry if you, like others feel excluded, because you can't follow what's going on.. the only thing I can say is that we are doing the best we can.. but we cant help, if you don't ask questions.. so if your not following something, don't hesitate to ask.. that's the quickest way to get around things..

as far as this "trinity" mvoe.. genereted on the computer... I'm not really sure what you are talking about.. but then again.. I don't have the best memory either.. I know what trinities are.. there's a file on them in poidia.. they aren't computer generated, nor are they hypothetical, nor sick (<-imo)

what I'm thinking about is the calabi-yau... whihc is computer genereated extradimensional topography... and it is hypothetical in the sense that the dimensional paths can be traced.. but calabi-yau come in many varieties of shapes, sizes, twists and turns, so its hard to say that this -one- is the yau, and not a yau.. and even then its more of a section of (or whole) routine to make.. since it involves playing with all sorts of depth changes (isolations, giant, etc..) as well as forced plane changes, and inversions.. the catch being that I think the most beatutiful ones would involve a bf base.. and frankly I dont know of anyone up on their bf work enough with insides, and inversions and what tnot to really pull one off.. but it doesnt mean we can't make some other more basic versions in the meantime..

mmm good points. :/ we're just spoiled little brats, not saying that you implied that, but that's how i feel it is. and you're right if i didn't understand i should ask. i'll be here more often and hopefully i can learn more. thanks Sphism/smilesmiley

no problem...

as far as the brat thing.. no I didnt mean to imply that, so I'm glad you didnt take it that way.. what made it click for me was when my younger sister had her own laptop that kicked the crap out of my old, handed-down computer.. I got mine in my 4 yr of college she got her's before her freshman year of high school.. One of my friends mj has son Kain, and he brought it up to me how Kain was growing up with so many things that he didnt have.. he has a computer and a tv with cable, and playstation 2 and what not.. and he just turned 4 last month.. just a lot more things are common these days and us geezers (lol) have to catch up.. but I'm glad you understand and I hope to see you around here more..

btw was the calabi yau the thing you were talking about? I think there should be a thread on it called 'is this a sphercular solid' or something to that effect.. not much poi discussion, more of inspiration..

to be fair, just on the bit about not uinderstanding anything on the tech level, i can now, after much experimentation/fustration/miracles do a fair bit of technical stuff, but when i read about it i still have no idea what people are talking about. but then again i spin solo and have no community even vaguely near me so.....
as for having loadsa stuff like vids etc, i could wish id spent my money on that stuff and not kilos of green..... but now its too late and i have a shitty teachers salary with. one of the sad people always goin into the same shop and looking through the cabinet at the digital camcorders drooling on the polished floor Sphism/winksmiley and will, i saw one of your vids and it proper sorted out all the tech talk of mindgames etc so cheers for that. some great bounce wraps were there (the behind the back bicep leg ones)
peace

rev: yea that was the move i think. the one with the cool pictures. heh.

As I'd said on HOP, nice video Wil. Sphism/smilesmiley

For the technical discussion stuff, I've done some very technical things in other circles and I can't make heads or tales of most of those discussions either. Like Rev said, part of it is what you're used to. Also some people just learn better from video, live, text, etc.

Coming from yo-yos, we have like the most videos of almost any hobby online I think. Similar to glowsticking, lots of younger people that have cameras and computers and know how to use them, as well as wanting to one-up each other online. Having contests, though, increases that even more since one person could easily film an hour of people doing their best tricks just by filming freestyles.

It used to be that the yo-yos had big text descriptions and you got used to tackling it a bit, but now things are so complex, there's just no way. Basically when a new trick comes out, you see it in a video first, so message board threads are limited to advice on things you're already trying to learn.

I have to say when I started looking at HOP again a couple of months ago (after some years away), I was kind of shocked that there were these discussions on crazy things and barely even the basics of those things were in videos. That was somewhat to be expected back 2000, but not so much now...

When you already know a trick, it is a lot easier to discuss some variations in text. It is a lot harder to digest a new concept just from text. I think that's what makes some of the poi discussions so confusing is that it is a couple of layers removed from visuals. If you've maybe seen a regular hyperloop and then have people talking about not only hyperloop buzzsaw, but complex variations of that, you'll be totally lost. It also doesn't help that a lot of the poi stuff has many variations (forward, back, horizontal, btb, etc), which can add complexity on top of even basic moves. Now that I finally know what a flower is, I can start to approach some of the flower discussions online, while I was totally lost in them before.

But really, we just need more videos online. I've learned so many yo-yo tricks from osmosis. I watch the videos a bazillion times and I find I've already incorporated a lot of the ideas in my head, and that makes actually learning them a lot easier. It also hasn't helped that a lot of focus is glowing stuff so that people's bodies are often times obscured..heh

But it seems like things are improving. This video has lots of cool concepts. T0xic's vid was brightly lit enough to see moves. Oli's and Pink's vids have been cool. There's tutorial videos on gs.c, here, and several other places now.

I don't look at it that the glowsticking or yo-yo people are spoiled.. just that poi needs to try to catch up. Sphism/smilesmiley In this day and age, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect lots of videos online instead of wading through long technical threads. The threads are obviously very important to hash things out (especially for those things that no one has pulled off yet), but it still feels like a stepping stone to me before the moves can get dispersed into videos for everyone else to learn from.

Cheers,
Shawn
