Spherculism Banners
Hey everyone, i've just enabled the banner system on the site and you should currently be able to see an advert for firefox at the top of the page.
I'm gonna do free advertising for things that I think deserve it. Most of the stuff will be open source things. ie they give it away for free so i advertise it for free.
So does anyone have any suggestions? A few banners i might do are for, The Gimp which is an excellent openSource version of photoshop, osCommerse which is a great openSource e-commerse system, wkipedia and so on.
Also does anyone object o having ads on spherculism, are they a pain in the ass? Or do you like the idea?
And is anyone interested in advertising anything they do? If you do something really good and earn no money from it then I could do free advertising for you. If you do something really good comersially then we could arrange a banner in exchange for some payment. For that I could design you a wicked little banner (which i do as part of my job) either as a gif or preferably flash (much better looking and smaller file size than animated gif) plus you get a user name and password to log into an account to see how many times your ad has been seen and how many people have clicked over to your site.
Any funds will of course go straight into spherculism.
I'd be particularly interested in advertising cool performers, people who make good equipment, members websites, useful resources and the like.

As far as software and good open source type causes go, I think it would be better to feature these in a thread, sticky perhaps, so that those interested can look further- I'm sure many poiple arriving at |S| will have not the faintest idea or care about using firefox and what 'open source' even is. Those that are will take the time to read relevant posts (with banners in them and maybe a description?).
As far as performers, performances and anything directly poi or sphercularly related which could benefit the site I'm all for it. As long as theres no bullshit adware (and I know you're totally against that) I really don't mind just as long as its not too boldly positioned- The firefox banner is too blatant against the sperchulism one at the moment- its twice the size and in a position where it looks like a header, which could be a little confusing to new visitors.
On a slight tangent, is there any chance of adding the member map buttons- its stuck off in the sphercular ball thread and isn't getting the attention it would if placed a bit more prominently- i'd move the thread but can't

Thing is tho chutney i really want everyone on spherculism to use firefox for 1 simple reason. Firefox renders png files but microsoft won't make IE do the same, you get a horrid blue background instead of the transparency.
I want to stop using shitty gif's to make this site and the next time i update the graphics i'll be using png's instead, because they look much nicer, no jagged edges and varying levels of transparency.
I'e reduced the size of the ad, it was eclipsing the spherc logo a lot, but that's soon gonna change anyhow.
as for people not wanting to know about open source stuff, the point is that very few people know that open source stuff is free and usually as good if not better than comersial stuff. Why do people not know? Because they cannot afford to advertise because they do not charge for their product. So I'm advertising their stuff for free.
For example. Open Office is free, it works waaaaay better than microsoft office, opens all microsoft files and saves them but everyone thinks they need to buy ms office. Obviously i'm talking about people who have got a lot to lose by using a crack copy.
Then take The Gimp, I installed it the other day and was blown away at how good it is, it's got pretty much every feature of photoshop 6, plus a few extras. Given the choice of buying photoshop cs (which is rubbish and increadibly processor hungry) or using the Gimp I say bring out the Gimp.
Well if anyone gets me to link to a site with adware then i'll take the banner away. Of course i hate adware. But how about banners for Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D? How many people actually know that stuff exists? I certainly wouldn't if i didn't work in web design.
I se it as educating and looking out for the comunity.
Thanks for the reply chutney, sorry if i sound defensive i don't mean to be

just no popups man!!! ads are no bother to me, and if you put some stuff that links to video/photo editing software that would be fat. peace

Actually you can sort out the alpha transparency on IE either through a client-side JavaScript hack or a server-side PHP hack
http://koivi.com/ie-png-transparency/
because the code exists in IE, it's just not enabled...
It's a bit of a pain though!

I'd be fine with it, but if possible could you avoid those annoying flashy kinds? The kinds that have a strobe of colors? Very annoying to have one eye squinting trying to block the flashing colors.

open-source intended banners is fine to me,
