teaching kids, hmmm
id imagine that we have all been there. iv got a few cousins and there mates always beg me to teach them stuff but i start talking crap and they just look confused. i dont really seem to be able to teach kids quickly enough to be able to maintain thier interest.
does anyone have some experience of teaching kids poi? like moves they should learn with less difficulty. anything like that would be of great help.
thanx

i always say...
if you want to learn to do it... you have to be dedicated... the beginning bits are the most difficult, a person has to get used to manipulating the poi as they're swingingthem wildly around!
The best thing is to get them to swing them around as much as they can, whenever they can they must spin! The persons (kids or adults) who suffer through the initial part (getting used to the poi movement) and actually start spinning properly are the ones who will actually be worth teaching.
It's a matter of passion! I don't believe in waisting my time or sumbody elses time, if there is no passion or dedication involved...
i knew a 10yr old girl who i taught to spin, she was terrible, but persevered! it's difficult to try explain to you what to say and watch out for... i sit with a group of people spinning now and just watch as they practice and try things out, then i just give pointers and tips for them to get them right!
Something that i have also noticed is that we men seem to be quite dense and give up easier! Girls and women are much easier to teach, they (in general) actually listen to advice and are prepared to put in hours of work for the initially slow progress!

depends on their age. young kids have the shortest attention span and anymore than 5 mins on one thing theyll lose interest. my experience is all from teaching english, but you could try combining the teaching with other activities, like dancing, moving round in a pattern to practice footwork, back to poi... you could do a game with a single sock poi, like they throw it to someone, that person has to spin the poi in a circle somewhere round their body and then throw it to someone else. when someone drops it they have to kneel down and spin a circle. if they drop it again they have to lie down. get them into the different plains. it helps if you make the mistakes and then they get to laught at you.
you could incorporate some sort of vocal aspect to it, that i cant think of, but word association or somethiing. or get them to describe where they do the circle (behind the head, in front, behind, clockwise, anticlockwise. obviously doesnt have to be all those terms in case they get confused) and then the next person has to spin the poi somewhere else.
kids love praise, and treats for getting things right. you need loads of activities, and with poi theres so much like movement, turning, spinning, rotating your arms. you could try giving commands like 'windmill' and they all have to spin their arms like a windmill, in a kind of 'flowers' way. with or without poi... you dont want them hitting themselves
kids will be interested if its fun. they probably dont care about the technical aspects of poi, but if you make it a right laugh, they should come back.
good luck

i teach a poi club at my school. the kids that pick up tricks easily are the ones that have stuck with me all year. i find teaching them everything i know a good way to progress. something will be easy for them. as long as they have some sort of instant gratification they'll be interested. if they find the weave hard, teach a corkscrew. if they can't turn, teach them to spin around without hitting themselves.
i encourage them to try something new and then practise something they know before they get frustrated with the new trick.

hmm, i dnt think it has much to do with the age or gender, more how their mind is set, on how they look at things in their minds eye. cos the first time i picked up some poi i span the 3bw straight away, course i dint no wat it was then lol.I agree with just making it fun, theyre not gonna care about the technical side, as long as theyre spinning and having fun. Jokes all the way
