Which staff?

Hey everyone!!

I have been practicing staff for a little over a year now, and those early dyas have pretty much trashed my first staff to peices. So now its time to but a new one!!

I am starting to do a lot of contact, and thought maybe rather an buy another aluminium staff, perhaps I should get a wooden one. Are they really so fragile?? What are your opinions on wooden and aluminium staffs. Also what are your opnions on telescopic staffs? P.S. The staff will be about 1.4 metres if that makes any difference.

Many thanks

Davey

sorry man, ive not got a clue about staff. suprised that noone else has written back to you tho coz normally a fair anount of people trawl though here looking at staff stuff....
my mates used to use wooden staffs that they homemade and they were very durable for pracice. you can also select the thinkness if you go down to a b n q. there are also rubber staffs available from firetoys.co.uk handmade from recycled rubber that might be less painful than wood for contact, but again i dont know anything about it really
hope thats some help
peace

I used a wooden staff for a while until a friend snapped it for me. There could be a couple of morals there. I reckon it depends on what you`re going to do with it. If you mainly what to do contact then it will probably be ok. But if you what to do throws then I would stick to metal.
I mainly do contact and find that using a cromoly staff with a strip of dowel running through the core of it is best. It gives it a good weight and durability whilst still having a bit more life and give to it than just ally. The staff is 5ft 6in, I haven`t had any probs, and find it ideal for contact. I have a shorter staff of the same design which has stood up to all manner of abuse.
I use a couple of telescopic staffs for doubles. I find they can bend easily, but they are nice, light and convenient. I find them too light for contact however.
Personaly I wouldn`t use wood again, but everyone is different and has a different style.
Hope that`s of some help.
Happy days. K
