New Poi Site:

I've just made a new poi site and I need some traffic etc so I thought I'd come advertise it here! There are forums and a gallery and a few other bits at the moment, lessons are on their way when I get around to it (could be a while!). Anyway, enough waffle, the site is:

http://www.poijoy.urevised.com

p.s. Matt, I hope you don't mind me advertising here!

i think you may have to offer something different to what all the other sites out there offer if you want people to visit your site.

like for example spherc (imo) is very much tailored towards technical poi, and aims to encourage transferable skill sets across prop types.
to set it apart it has a huge selection of teaching videos, the wikipoidia and poibot.

pip is very much geared towards events and has some great performance geared videos and knowledge share articles.
soton-firspinning is a similar resource for those in the south of the country.

hop is the originator and most is the most global example of this type of community.

your website seems to be a *completely* empty version of any of these websites (seriously, no content other than a few of your fire pictures...?) with even less of a direction in terms of differentiation.

- sorry if that all sounds like i'm outright dissing you/your site.
i only mean to point out that you seriously need something to set your site apart from those already established or, i feel, your site will be doomed to failiure.

if i were you, i'd think about getting a damn sight more content up before you ask people to come and join your website.

ask yourself, "what am i offering to those who come to join my community?"

good luck and hopefully i'll bump into your website sometime in the future...

that sounds like something that will set the site apart, n'est pas cole? Sphism/winksmiley

but i do agree with cole about the content. you have made a bold move in getting a site started, and its more than most will ever be arsed to do, and i have muchos respect for anyone who can get off said arse and do something to try and build a community. but, by linking to sites that are hugely more developed than your own at the moment you risk people going to the sites you have linked to and then forgetting about your enterprise. and that would suck for the effort you no doubt have put/are putting/will put into the site. as a starting point, a work in progress is cool, but you may need something more concrete to get people interested.

as for coles suggestiona about setting your site apart, i would suggest you might like to focus on what you feel other websties dont offer/dont offer well enough, and go in that direction. this will be a massively time consuming exercise because the easy stuff, and the harder stuff, is already out there. but it will get beaucoup people going to your site if you can offer something other sites dont. ive learnt all my stuff from the web, and mainly from [s], but there is loads this site cant offer. just like hop imo can be a daunting and un-user-friendly place for beginners to increase their basic skills because of the fact everyone there has been spinning for so long that explanations to beginner questions sometimes forget that you dont possess enough knowledge to understand whats being talked about.

all the best with your endeavour. as i said, i have nothng but respect for anyone who decides to take an active part in developing knowledge of any kind, rather than being a passive reader. good luck
peace

thanks for the input guys, to be honest I hadn't really thought to much about the general direction of the site at this point, currently the aim is to get it up and running and get a few regular members then see where we want to take the site as a whole rather than trying to pre-decide things. really I want to give it as little structure as possible so that people feel they can do whatever thay like and I've linked to sites that are much more developed than mine exactly for the reason that they are better than mine, this means my members can easily head off and find something that I don't have, I'm all for sharing the knowledge!

anyway, if you guys think that I should be giving it some direction then do you have any ideas abot the direction to give it? All suggestions on anything about the site are very welcome Sphism/winksmiley

I'm relaunching the site, you guys were quite right about content and I launched far too early, now there is a lot more on the site and a few more things in the pipelines but now i think it's up to scratch as a starting point, have a peek and let me know what you think... Sphism/gigglesmiley
