contact poi

this technique has doubtless been done before but its new to me and i thought maybe to some others as well. from an outwards butterfly, you throw the left poi quite gently under the right arm. as the poi head comes over the forearm, you use your forearm to push the poi right next to the head, which makes the handle spin round the head very fast. the effect feels like the poi is rolling over your arm. you can push up, to the left, and to the right, and the direction that the poi spins off at changes. is this some kind of wrap? and what else can i do with it?

Unless I'm mistaken that sounds extremely like a wibble to me, which has been discussed a bit I think, try doing a 'wibble' search.

While we're on the subject, Contact is something I've really been trying to crack recently so if anyone has any pointers that'd be grand.

So far I've been trying propellers (which you can go into as you describe above Sphism/smilesmiley ) with limited success, and the start of a 'Steve' kind of move from ceiling plane with limited sucess Sphism/confusedsmiley .

I think low friction poi (silk?) may be very useful for this as my main problem seems to be keeping the point of contact near to the centre of rotation.
Also I have recently put some weight in my handles for throws and contact stuff, does the weight need to be equal (between head and handle) or does it just put the centre of rotation more towards the weighted end? I tried equal weighted poi the other day but it seems really hard to do throws with them.

Is this what they call thread-jacking? Sphism/winksmiley

yea its very like a wibble but you manipulate near the poi head not the poi handle. its also hard to maintain as you can make the poi fly off at any angle you desire. since the thread is about contact, i dont think your hijacking it Sphism/winksmiley but any more of that talk about silk socks and there'll be trouble!!

I've found that the secret to contact poi (and maybe this is cheating) is the wrists.. it doesnt matter where you connect with the poi... I prefer closer to a poi head (since with contact there both effectively poi heads.. )

the way you keep your hand/wrist tucked during the move, provides a base that can rotate with the poi.. so its like holding it, while it moves... it gives you more control to direct all the thruwraps and what not that you are going to use while doing contact..

at least thats been my approach to it..

wisdom from matt on the weight:

Quote:
just counter weight the handle maybe 1/3 to 1/5 the weight of the head and you'll be fine.

If you have light heads and long socks you can just tie lots of knots, finger knitting works a treat.

If the headds are heavier then add a little counter weight in the handle.

with wibbles ive found a kind of cutting motion works best, but revs suggestion is interesting.. will have to exoperiment,,,,,

doing contact on bear skin in much much easier and gets rid of the need for silk poi. at least thats what i found yesterday trying to do it witha shirt for the first time.....

ben playing loads with what i mentioned at the top of the thread and combining it with wibbles. if a wibble changes direction, this spins the poi in the same direction as its travelling. its very very nifty when combined with hand swaps and etc

Wibble changes direction
Propellor keeps poi moving same direction

THe tricks i find to propellors are to:
1) learn how to do it with a devilstick
2) you don't just keep your hand in the same place all the time...
3) you are always doing a tiny throw, then moving your hand to the place it needs to be to continue smoothly, tiny throw again, move hand etc
4) The "wibble sweet spot" is a couple inches along from the handle. The "propellor sweet stop" is a couple inches along from the head.
5) To kkep propellor moving smoothly, connect with the prop. sweet spot then gently stroke your hand out towards the handle. TIny throw, move swiftly back to the sweet spot and repeat.
6) Works really nicely if you use 2 fingers (pointing like a gun) instead of your whole hand.
7) longer heavy poi = slower more controlable propellors.
8.)when practicing try doing 1 prop. then back to the hand. Then 2 props. and back to the hand. THen 3, 4, 5 etc. Until you can keep going for ages.

That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I can keep em going for a short while (15 max i should think) but really want to nail them for longer. Was practicing underarm throw >>> propellor catch.

Keep up the good work jon,

tick tock same direction wibbles. only 6 beats so far.... but i can feel it getting there! sadly nowhere near the 6 minutes of sickness on matts contact juggling vid, but it will get there
