Poiboy for Hire

Greetings,

Was wondering if many of you other poiers (UK based specifically) ever ply your trade for cash (ie for promotions companies; events), and if yes, how you went about getting work.

I'm a fairly competent spinner - have had a year of travel to get in some good practice - but will be back in the UK (Nottingham) soonish and am looking to make some spare cash with a job i don't hate, to financially supplement the one i do.

Any suggestions  wld be just swell...

1. come up with a small flyer design. put what events you are willing to perform at eg parties, whatever. put the words fire show, and a telephone number. then wait for the phone to ring. tax evasion is a crime, and you should declare any earnings you get. if you dont intend to, its best if the mobile number you put on is not registered to anyone or any adres. remember, the inland revenue are some of the least forgiving people about.

2. contact anyone respobnsible for ogranising parties/weddings (weddings are always good because people generally splash money about). this could be anyone from events organisers to catering firms, (the later will always be interested because it makes their company look more unique. find out if they are paying you through the books. then wait to be booked in.

3. you will need to work out a price list, and work out how much per minute you are going to charge, (i think usually its per minute, althought you can do flat rate as well). find out if someone else in the area does the same thing, and then ask them about their prices. if you do something ridiculously low, then that affects all the other performers, and the money you could potentially be making. other performers will learn of your presence, hunt you down, and beat you with spoons.

4. make sure you are always performing on proivate property, otherwise you could be done for a number of things. never perform near roads, as it could cause accidents... and always make sure you have a safety who gets payed separately and who gets cash that reflects the responsibility they have: eg, keeping audience members away from you, from drinking your parafin (you would be amazed what pissed people will do, it happened to me), anouncing your show to build it up a bit, oh, and keeping you from setting yourself on fire.

peace

Just another thought and I don't really know the ins and outs but you might want to look into professional indemnity insurance (PII) too.

Cheers guys

making a flyer sounds like a plan - i'll stick it phone boxes around notts and snare some disenchanted experimental perverts. or just work at weddings, that cld be cool. but yeah, there's always trouble with pissed people around, and there're always pissed people around. oh well, it's their hair...
