WHY did you START POI??
Ok, this is a bit of trite query - there's a good chance it's been covered before - but I'm curious as to what prompted all your good selves to first start spinning. I thought about adding a poll, but am guessing answers will be too diverse to make it work.
Personally, I took up spinning as a means of establishing the size of a room, using the now illegal 'cat-poi', but I can imagine others came to it from a background of juggling, dancing, and hallucinogen-ing. Or, indeed, all three.
Best response wins a biscuit.

WHY did you START POI??
Well I was in Australia for my second cousin's funeral (kangeroo chasing accident...) and we got attacked by a swarm of bush flies. I'd forgotten my hat with all the corks round the edge and the flies were just making me so MAD  There were these citronella lamps on chains hanging around so I grabbed a couple and started swinging them at the flies in rage. While I was in hospital having my burns treated loads of people came to visit and told me that it looked really cool when I was spinning the fire so when I recovered I took up poi.

WHY did you START POI??
I went to an open air party, i ve seen a guy spinning fire. I said this is something I have to learn... :6
After a year i went to an other party to spin fire and the same guy came to me and said: "i like the style of your spinning, when did u start poi???".
For me poi is relaxing. When I want to be alone and relax, I just take my socks, go to the beach where r no people, put some nice music and spin. Maybe this is the reason I started... :2
WHY did you START POI??
I was snow boarding and dislocated my shoulder and fractured it in 3 places... they gave my sedatives and sent me home to the UK where, 4 months later, when the nhs finally got to me on the waiting list, they decided that it was too late for physio and told me i was fine. i couldn't move my right arm. so i started spinning and now i am all better again....
...that and i fancied the man who taught me...
