What Poi do you use??

Sphism/gigglesmiley Hi all,,

I was wondering, what poi do you own?? thought it would be nice to see what instruments we all use, so i took some piccys,

First of all my Wraps or sock poi whatever you call um,,lol

I absolutly love these, pair of punky fish socks, i also have a pair of yellow ones with 8-balls over them (my fave) but are in the wash after a week of hard practise, i use rice in these poi, i like the feel and adjustable weight,, Sphism/smilesmiley

Next up is my poi poi Glowballz,

These are cool, nice weight, only thing i dont like is the cords they come with,,but the effect in the night is AWSUM,, this is the best pic i could get of them in action, with my Phone,, (i`ll be taking better quality pics and video very soon, i promise lol)

This is them still,, ( not very often! lol Sphism/tonguesmiley )

These poi are a `Homebrew` lol.. summin i knocked up in my spare time ,,,chains, handles, and persil washing nets,,and some real bright-LED, Flashy things lol !!

and with the lights off?

lastly my short tailed mouse poi,
(which i hardly use )

anyway theres mine, little backround too lol..

Hiya, nice thread! Here's my luvly gear

Type- Fire poi, 2 inch heads with cables
From- HoP
Colors- Tan haha
Usage- I have yet to burn them :'(
Opinion- I don't really know yet.

Type- Long tailed streamer poi
From- HoP
Color/s- Blue and green
Usage- Normally just on sunny days, don't know why, but I'm only satisfied with them when sun is out... perhaps because with grey comes cold, and usually wind....
Opinion- A blast on sunny days, so much fun and they're uber pretty. I love the weight of them, you can do slow motion or go really fast, very very fun.

Type- Streetlights
From- TechnoMoves
Color/s- Yellow-Purple-Green
Usage- Any time I'm feeling spinny, which is quite often, and it's night time.. so I use them alotr
Opinion- Can you say obsessed?? I love em to death!! It's sad though because only one setting works, and it was my least favorite of them all but that's ok, it's grown on me and I just love dancing to some good tunes with them. They're a wee bit heavy now that I have deflectors on them, but just shorten them up a bit and you're good to go

Type- Thigh high socks
From- Hot Topic
Color/s- Black and orange stripey
Usage- They're my normal pair, that I spin with constantly. I'm always spinning these babies
Opinion- Weeee! It'd be a shorter answer to ask what I DON'T like about them Sphism/gigglesmiley

Type- Flag poi
From- Dollar fabric section, my old shoes, and a bag of candy corns
Color/s- Blue and white stripey
Usage- Not quite as often as me socks, but close! Also most often on sunny days, but they're quite trippy in the moonlight
Opinion- The best thing I've ever spun, they're wonderful! They're a perfect square, almost as big as I am, I have to hold them further down because they drag on the ground. I tied them to a shoe string, with a handful of candy corns at the end to weight them. What can I say, I didn't feel like sewing weights in. fBut they work just beautifully like this, so I'm not worried about it for now Sphism/smilesmiley

Deceased- Two pairs of sock poi, one black and white, the other red and black, I don't know how many pairs of rice pouches that I used my first year, a beautiful tennis ball pair that my mom made for me, 2 sets of LED Lightsticks.

Cheers

Sphism/gigglesmiley i forgot bout me fire ones, lol.. hey you know your streetlights? ive heared a whisper about using 1inch rubber, see-thru tubing,,to stop knocks and bangs,,? maybe this is lighter than the deflectors?..

I've got clear tubing on them, got it from home depot. Clear vinyl tubing (if that's how you spell vinyl.. vynil... vinel... whatever) . Is rubber any lighter???

thats the stuff i meant lol..heavy is it?,, hey dude get some pics up,,id like to SEE all the poi we got ,, Sphism/gigglesmiley

Well it's not so heavy in itself, but combining two light weight things seem to make one heavy thing... but not to the point where you can't go uber fast.. just enough that it's annoying.

Hehe will do, just as soon as I can Sphism/gigglesmiley

Catherine

Thick white cotton tights. (Although the handles are now more of a brown Sphism/confusedsmiley and one has a red stain where it landed in some salsa Sphism/sadsmiley )
Cut down from old pair of my girlfriend's. Beanbags in the end from my first pair of poi (Poi-Joy, lasted two days before the strings fell apart)
Dried mixed beans sewn into the other end to make a handle, but these split and sharp bits occasionally stick out. Other than that I love them, but I think I need more weight in the handle for contact stuff.

Monkey fists. bought from HOP on cable. Swapped to welded link chain after about a week (never do tangles with cable!) Swapped the swivels to the handle end at the same time to avoid the chains twisting up during tangles. Love them but maybe a bit short (Easily remedied for someone who isn't competely slack)

Balls-U-Like strobing rainbow poi. Bought at the Big Green Gathering. Very pretty when lit but HATE the string. Think I need to get some thin white socks to put them in. Also unsure about the interlocking rubber star things on the outside, they seem to affect the brightness a bit. The screw switch mechanism seems to be badly designed/made too. it only makes contact when the battery spring is fully compressed. This causes problems which could have been easily resolved by the inner cylinder being a fraction longer. In short, I could do better. Hmmm.....

Also considering making the strobing poi into handles for the fire poi so I can see them for throws etc. One day...

my favourite poi are a little odd, i got some coughmankycough red ones which are adjustable 8O and some nicer really short green ones with bbbbbiiiiig handles so you can hold either end, really fun for inversions and throws and stuff like that. Sphism/gigglesmiley plus loads of other sock poi that i use from time to time, but none of them are as general purpose as my red ones or my green ones...

possibly the weirdest is my double headed (snowmen socks) white (glows under uv, except they got really manky on saturday.. i think someone poured beer on them) sock poi.

I use poi I made myself, and I treat them nicely, I don't spill beer over them or leave them out in the wet, and I regularly wash them.

So they are clean and bright! Unlike some peoples...

lol Sphism/gigglesmiley yeh mcp, same as me, gotta keep them colours bright,

in my first post i told ya about my 8ball socks,,well i bought another couple of pairs, so i took some photos again wid my phone,
here ya go,,

these are made by punkyfish, and they are awsome to spin with,,

get your pics online peeps ! Sphism/tonguesmiley

In defense of my manky socks:
1: They have beans in the handles and are sewn shut so if I washed them they might start sprouting or something :o
2: They are prctice poi. The only real spinning is fire :18 All you "Ooh I must keep my socks clean..." ponces are just a bunch of ponces.

I'm not in a bad mood...

'practice poi' you say. Rubbish I tells ya :p

Whats the matter Mr T? I still like you Sphism/smilesmiley

OK, I'll admit it.
I just have a dirty sock fetish... Sphism/winksmiley

Sphism/gigglesmiley lmao

ok ok ,,,,fair enough about the beans in the handles,, but you ever heard of hand washing? lolol..

as for sock poi being `practice` poi, no no no no,,,,, personally i think sock poi is a art in itself, totally different to all other types of poi,

I love spinning fire too,, in fact me an my spinny buddies have been booked for fireworks night this year, at margam castle, south wales,, we gonna be spinnin while the `worx` go up !!! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Sphism/gigglesmiley Cant wait,,,,

but the main thing is,,personal preferance if ya want mucky socks,,have mucky socks man,,rock on i say !! lol..

Gizmo-out

8O oooo and im no a poofty either lmao,,, Sphism/gigglesmileySphism/gigglesmiley

hey!

i use mostly socks to practice (are quite dirty now, anyway not so much time to practice in the last half year...). fire, tailed, L.E.D. poi from HOP (happy with them) Sphism/gigglesmiley .

I took my Globalz travelling with me but the little netty ball-holder things fell apart after about 6 months. Am now using juggling balls in socks or my dirty fire-poi, but for a while I was experimenting with home-made jobs:

i) rocks in plastic bags (obvious set-backs)
ii) toilet rolls in pillow covers (a little sluggish)
iii) sand (etc) in balloons or (dare i say it) condoms (bit too elasticy)

of these, iii) was probably the best. Some guys I met were using glowsticks or LEDs in foam pipe insulators. Dunno how common this is but it's pretty cool. So many possibilites

i only use one type of poi nowdays really:

round, padded shoelace with no seams.
wrist loop at one end.
net at the other end.
ball in net.

i also made some of these with nets at both ends which opens up lots of fun possibilities in the dark with four globalls Sphism/coolsmiley

[quote="dodgeramus"]I took my Globalz travelling with me but the little netty ball-holder things fell apart after about 6 months.

its all about the persil nets man... Sphism/smilesmiley

where do you think globallz got the idea from...?

cole. x

ohh deffinatly,, pity you couldnt just directly connect the globallz to the strings,,hmmm,,am gonna have to think this one thro ! lol Sphism/tonguesmiley

Gizmo,

Excellent point, but think the inner weave of globalz is too tight attach string to. Alas, I will never know as one of the f*#kers detached itself into a lake in Tibet. The other was subsequently buried with it. Hence the home-made variety.

But yeah, persil nets - efficient, but look a bit gypo..

Not at all- When they're doing their thing, all iluminated and nice, you'd never know would you? Sphism/smilesmiley

I use a set of counterweighted socks as my fave (matt calls them 'wibbles' which i'll probablky take up Sphism/smilesmiley), take anywhere, do anything poi, but I have several sock and cone poi variants, a beefy set of home made cathedral wicked ball-chained fire poi, some fire ropes, some rope fire poi and of course, some tails.

Sphism/gigglesmiley Talkin about counterweight socks,,i let some rice fall down to the handle bit of my socks ,,and tied it off,,

throws are muuuuch better now,,they kind of spin on them selves instead of shooting off ,,,

i mostly use home made tennis ball poi rather then the wick.
i also have a pair of sock poi that i never use and a pair of cheap poi that i bought at black market.

i had some beautiful ball chain catherdal poi, but i lent them to a freind who left them under a bush in the forest of dean, so if anyone around there finds them, there mine!
I am now using a cheap pair of double wicks, until i can afford some better ones, but to be honest i havent spun for a long long time, but the summers back so no excuse not to now, i nearly had the 5beat weave so i will start there again.

nat

Some lovely Hyperloop cone poi, customised with hqandles which are treatingme very well, and some wicked all kevlar rope fire poi with small monkeyfist rope handles- they're a bit weird when spun dry, but when full of full the weighting is pretty much perfect Sphism/gigglesmiley Fire wibbles- oh yes indeedy Sphism/gigglesmiley
