Well i don't know about anyone else but i'm ready for a brand spanking new all singing all dancing spherculism site ![]()
We've got a phat new server that w'll be sharing with some friends of mine. It has a maaaaaHoosive storage limit that will hold 1000's of videos plus a whoping great bandwidth limit.
As the kiwis say, it's sweet as!!
Now i'm finally movign the site away from phpNuke. The tricky bit is do we go straight for the cutting edge stuff, or do we go for the intermediate step Well I think it's gonna be the later. The lead developer has an entire site system custom built for a different site and we are gonna use that instead of phpnuke.
So this essentially means the gallery will work properly. You get your own gallery space and i tested it out the other day, it's so sweet. You can make different albums, set custom thumbnails, thumb size layout styles, all sorts of crazy things. Theres even a little gizmo that lets you drag n drop photos from your hard drive them upload them all at once, makes it dead quick and easy ![]()
The forums will be similar and all the other things you'd expect.
Gonna be really cool.
I've been workign on a new theme for the site and will continue to work on that once the new structure is in place.
It's all jolly exciting,

Thanks for all the hard work matt- I look forward to helping nurture the site back to its former glory, and then to suport its growth from there
New Site News
wow, sexy as matt.
things: the gallery crashed on my attempt to upload a png. (probably a big one)
I have no avatar image? I counldn't find a link in my profile to change it...
goes back to staring at prettiness of the new site....
New Site News
haha, the avatar sets itself to whatever the highlight image of your gallery is
At the moment tho this is a manual process, ie i have to click a button every now and then to update them.
the gallery should be able to handle pngs just fine, altho it was over 2000 pixels huge, bad meg. But i'll look into it.
Q: How do i get the gallery to use the flv player to view flash video files? What would be really pimp is if you could upload any video and the server converts it to flv for you. But i'm not sure we could do this because it would cain the server, but who knows.
New Site News
my hosting doesn't like me using up muchos CPU time. They don't mind bandwidth, but CPU time is as precious as gold.
So converting videos might not be a good idea, best check with your hosting thou.
I use: mencoder $1.wmv -o $1.flv -of lavf -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=56 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=flv:mbd=2:mv0:trell:v4mv:cbp:last_pred=3:predia=2:dia=2:vb_strategy=1:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2
:preme=2:qns=2 -srate 44100 -lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames
in a wee bash script.
Mencoder is for the win. But FLV seems very bad for moving objects. I always get yucky artifacts. I'm sure there could be a better configuration. youTube is probably using it, but I don't know what it is...

Ok everyone, i'm in need of some serious help.
I'm back in nz and i have broadband for a few weeks, so i wanna go hard out on the site while i have the chance to.
I feel like sphism has lost its direction, lost it's members, lost it's 'reason to be'.
The .com fiasco, followed by being offline for ages whilst i made the dvd, plus me not pushing things forward have all added to the lack of folks around here.
But i think a lot has changed since the times of the original spherculism site.
For example, a lot of the key players on sphism aren't spinning nearly so much any more.
And a lot of the discussions about crazy poi just don't seem to happen as much anywhere anymore, perhaps there's so much to play with at the moment that there's not so much room for innovation.
Or perhaps there's so much video online now with google and youtube etc that there's less need to talk.
Or maybe people just meet up a lot more now than they used to.
Who knows.
I'm amazed that no one has uploaded videos to the site yet, other than me. I mean you have a huge, free server with a badass gallery that's all geared towards video delivery, and yet no one uses it. I don't get it.
What do poiple want out of the site?
I think the new era in spinning is to take all the info that's out there and condense it down into useful, manageable, bite sized chunks. I mean there's so much info out there on every conceivable aspect of spinning poi (staff, diabolo, etc) but it would take many lifetimes to find it, read it and learn how to do it.
I see spherculism as a means to condense this knowledge down and display it in a way that people can understand.
But i'm totally overwhelmed by that at the moment. Just trying to build the structure of how i teach poi is hard enough. Let alone make all the videos, then write about them all and make images to demonstrate ideas. Then there's the issue of linking to other information on the site, or other sites. Linking to other videos and forums.
Then there's all the other toys to play with, and all the cross overs from poi to diabolo to staff etc etc.
I guess spherculism is going thru a bit of an identity crisis. What's her purpose? is the effort i put in actually worth it? Is everything i do covered by other sites already?
What is spherculism's USP, Unique Selling Point?
There's also the plan to earn money from spherculism in a way that benefits everybody. I love the idea that everyone puts in £5 a month, then everyone makes lessons on anything they want to and are paid depending on how much of their stuff is downloaded.
But maybe i should just take sphism down the standard road to make money. Have a shop, sell some cheap tailpoi, blah blah blah.
I feel like i'm pretty much on my own, whereas there used to be so many moderaters around to help out.
I dunno where sphism is going, i dunno where it should go, free (and rarely updated) or commercial (and full of content). Can there be a happy medium perhaps. Maybe offer all the lessons (text) for free, but charge say 10c for a video that goes with the lesson.
Your input will be very helpful to me. There's just so much potential for this place but i feel like i'm swimming in treacle.

:S wow man, you just need to get some more active members i think,, because the site itself is actually great, the layout, all the bells and whistles etc,, its just gone thro some major ass renovation eh?.. (
)
I do think that this site aims itself at the more technical or advanced spinner, by that i mean a spinner who is either driven very highly by motivation to get better etc, or a spinner who has been in the "game" so to speak for a long time,,
i have to say tho that during the winter months poi does lose its appeal somewhat, and every summer all the spinners rejoyce at the great weather and set off to discover more moves and things to do, this could be a example of why the members are lacking thesedays, maybe in the summer, activity will rise??,, im not sure but this place is still one of the biggest tanks of information on the web about poi...
the video gallery is a great idea matt, but like.. what is the max sizes of video files we can upload?.. i also think maybe you should make a small tutorial on how to upload videos
...
well, the way it is now, spherc has a wealth of info, i like that the way it is, but you could also start a sort of article section,, i mean,, you know how magazines and ezines have weekly sections about such n such a topic and they make a article and add pics and videos etc?..well this would be easy for members to submit, and will make for some good reading and looking forward to everyweek, (brings more returning members). the articles could be on a set of moves, or a certain trick for example.. there are lots of things to write about with poi, from gear reviews to inside the mind articles,, personally i think this is a great way to go for drumming up business!,
i think that maybe a membership program could be the way to go??.. i mean if i had to pay say 10p for each video ,,(i kno its not much), but its a bit of hassle just to see a vid yeh?...i mean everytime i want to check a lesson i have to sort my account details out and pay spherc...this could be a tiresome activity at the least eh?... but on the other hand if you have a small membership charge per annum, spherc would earn its keep, the small diehard members you have would join, and you could also create a buzz about "whats inside" and pick up alot more members,, i dunno matt just some ideas to throw your way
....
New Site News
hey that membership pack is a great idea, as you said it will actually give a buyer something material to hold,,
..
what sorta stuff you need help with on the site? mod-wise man?..
