Poi and dance
Hello all !
I start swinging few years ago, first with clubs, after with pois and staff, and I have the same problem with the three objects : I'm too static !!
Every time I see somebody swinging pois or anything else, what I like is the way to dance 'around' the object.
At the beginning, I thought that "you have to know several tricks to think about dance'... but know I can make a few tricks and it is always static !!
Every time I train swinging with pois, I put music I like but it is always the same result... except when I take some illegaly products (in France) but I think it's not a permanent solution !! ![]()
Is anybody has a tip to make my legs 'free' ? :8
I thought about trying dance lessons but I don't find which sort of dance choosing (oriental, belly dancing, ...)
If anybody can help me ...
Thanks !

Poi and dance
It's not tricks as much as it is transitions and variations. For instance once you can do a 3 beat weave forwards and backwards and turn between the two in both directions (clockwise and anticlockwise) then you can immediately start moving around with your poi rather than just doing the move.
Similarly there are variations on moves which allow you to do the same move in different ways and places and thus give you more freedom to move around. For instance straight arm weaves... do a standard 3 beat but with one arm extended so it's locked at the elbow. While it's functionally the same as a normal 3 beat you can then move your arm around, point it in different directions, swap which arm is straight and so on which gives you many more possibilities to move around and play.

I have exactly the same problem...
I can do a lot of tricks now and I can do them without stopping spinning the poi but it's too 'technical'...
So I will learn 'Under the leg' patterns and maybe I can use this kind of tricks to put between my other tricks.
I'm not sure if it's good to learn 'Rotational Reverse' patterns because I use to do fire poi so it's kinda hard to put wraps when the pois burn...

Try to practice 1 repetition of a pattern followed by one repetition of another pattern and so on.
Then try half a repetition followed by half a repetition of another pattern, followed by another, etc.
For starters you can try linking together anything where the poi follow each other, weaves, windmills, high and low split time turns. So then you'll be able to do kinda weavey freestyle. Then work on your butterfly combos in the same way. Like butterfly >> behind the back butterfly >> butterfly >> behind the head butterfly. Then try split time butterflys in the same way. Now you'll be able to do some funky butterfly freestyling. Next learn wraps to transition straight from weave to a butterfly weave and you'll be able to do some great freestyle. In there somewhere you wanna practice under the leg patterns.
So, in essence, the spherculism tutorials are split up into these 'Families' of patterns. First learn to link together patterns from the same family, then learn how to transition between families.
Well that's how I do it anyhow,

Thanks for your tips !
I think I will work a repetition of tricks in order to build a small show ...
It's perhaps the way to be less static ...!
Thanks a lot.

hi marmotte
I don't know why but it worked for me to learn at first many many tricks and then to start dancing ... but maybe it could be usefull for you to listen to the music , then dance a little bit and then just pick up your poi and dance with them ... all you have to do is to be relaxed and you mustn't think about that what other people could think about you if they'd see you ... dance like there are no other people

You would probably be right duVan. Maybe, listen to music while spinning can be a way to start moving and dancing.

Thats why I made that Music thread, but that wasnt too much of a success

Hi Duvan,
I think you're right : I always think about how the public see what I do and that block me as soon as a pattern fail ...
And it is certainly also a problem of timidity  , that's why I think about a small show with light sticks of swinging (easier in darkness !).
Thanks a lot for your advice.
Time to prepare myself to a carnival this afternoon : a good way to test your work with public !
Happy twirlin !
