General Discussion about the Poidia
Welcome home everyone,
I've been thinking that the poidia has been a great project for us all but it needs some updating.
Terms like negative space, wibbling, grabs, stands, whip catches and so on i don't think are in there yet.
Also i'd really like to make some really nice illustrations for the poidia to demonstrate things more clearly as the text alone is a little daunting.
The original idea for the poidia is that it could be the backbone of the site, to help us all communicate our ideas. I'd love to see it become a really useful tool for us all to use.
Some awesome news:
The poidia has been translated into Czech and Italian by Richee and Acciaio and at some point soon we'll be trying to link them all together nicely. Which i love because it's hugely important to help non english speakers with some of our concepts and vise versa.
Is there anyone who can translate the poidia into other languages? French and Spanish i think would be a very good start.
Also i'd like to hear some new ideas about where we want to take the project. I mean how is it going to be useful to people, what can we do to improve it etc.
Thanks for everyones help on this one,
m

General Discussion about the Poidia
This:
http://www.italianpoi.eu/cms/index.php?option=com_jd-wiki&Itemid=46
is the link for the Italian version!
Whatching at it I can think that a great work will be to make a "tree"like organization of it...
If I remember enought well something like a B-complex tree..but I don't now exactly....
There will be some different interpretations of it and we can first try to propose one!
For the ather question we can try to define all the contact stuffs for the poidia!!!It will be really great and I will love to partecipate!!!

Yeah organising all the content into some kind of 'tree' would be great.
The problem is always that the structure of this tree is always 'arbitrary' (this means that you can break up the information in any way you like, no way will be the best way to do it)
For example. As a beginner you tend to think of moves as Weaves, Butterflies, Beats, and so on
As you progress you might consider moves being 0 degree (without crossing arms) 1st degree (1 cross of arms or 2nd degree (2 crosses of arms)
or you might consider moves as being base patterns, or with certain applied modifiers, like isolations, throws, box planes, inside planes and so on.
Each of those 3 ways to break down poi movements is equally 'correct' and each way has good and bad points.
But which way should we break up the poidia?
Is there a way that we can create a 'smart' system which breaks the information up in the best way for each individual user?
That's what i've been wondering how to do with spherculism for many years now.
The best solution i can think of is not so much a 'Tree' but (for lake of a better word) a 'Matrix'.
Each piece of the poidia is a separate piece of data.
Each has 1 or more 'Tags' associated with it
eg 3 beat Weave
has Tags: 'Weave', '3 Beat', '1st Degree', 'un-modified'.............
Then as a default a new user would see all the content broken down in terms of weaves + butterflie, beats and so on.
Then as they progress they might like to start considering Degrees of twist
or modifiers
etc
To highlight the problem consider the difference between a weave, and a tangle. The difference is only that the 'point of twist' on the weave is your wrists, but on the tangle the 'point of twist' moves along the length of the poi body.
The other great example where the weaves and butterflies model breaks down is when you start working with atomic planes.
eg Here a move looks like a butterfly when a viewer looks at it from the front but a weave from the side.

I know these problems and I considered them...but there are two choise in my mind now...
The first is to choise only one more or less correct but choosen way to follow for organizeing the poidia, this is the simpliest way and after an introduction with some considerations of what and why the poidia is organized nearly anyone can understand it...the problem in this way are that the disadvantagies of the method are amplifyed a lot...
The second and really hard propose is to make an "Ontology" or a "knowledge base" (try to find this words with the informatic's meaning with google with also something like "semantic web" "OWL" and thinks like these)
With this structure you can create a really good and almost completely correct organization of the informations but this might take a lot of time to project it firstly and then a lot of time in implementing it and to write a software that use it because otherwise normal user cannot really use and understand it...
:o No doubt solved instead...I hope you can understand wath I'm saying ...
