aloa

Hi there!

Just to say hello as well, I'm Vanilla, 22, from southeast Germany. I have been watching this site since I started to spin poi, which was about two years ago, but never had my own internet to post things etc. But there we go ... (Sphism/tonguesmiley)

Unfortunately I hardly ever meet people spinning here, poi seems to be quite unknown :S, therefore I started clubswinging, but am no good at it right now.
At the moment I do not have firepoi but will buy some once I can afford them, but have tried it already and it was pretty good. I love flags as well because they are really demanding if it comes to complexity and accuracy.

Tangles and Isolations are my new deed for the year, and I hope, I get somewhere before 2007 ... 8-)
But one has to be optimistic....B)

Therefore

lots of sparks!

Hey Vanilla,

Thanks for introducing yourself, it's great to meet you.

The site has been a bit neglected in the last year because i've been so busy making the dvd.

But the dvd is finished now and i've had lots of time to devote to the site again.

I've also been spinning poi everyday again, which i hadn't been doing for a long time.

Isolations are nearly as difficult as they first seem, you'll have them nailed in no time at all, i promise.

The first thing you need to realise is that 'Isolation' isn't a poi move, or a poi trick, it is a concept used in all the moving arts.

Anything can be isolated.

If i hold a ball in my hand and move my self around it whilst the ball remains in the same space then the ball is isolated. If i move the ball whilst my elbow remains in the same place then my elbow is Isolated.

So when you are spinning normally, ie the center of rotation is at your hand, you are kinda isolating the poi handle.

The term Isolation is mainly used in poi to decribe the movement of Isolating the center of the poi body, half way between the head and handle.

To get a quick idea of how this works spin 1 poi slowly in the horizontal plane. Looking down on it.

Focus on the center of the poi body, the head is making 1 circle, your hand makes another circle, adjust the position of you hand so that it is always on the opposite side of the circle to the poi head..

Once you get the hang of controlling this gently start to lift the orbit of the poi head up on one side of it's circle and down on the other, until eventually the poi spins in a vertical circle.

Tangles will take a little longer to get the hang of, but you'll definitely have both within a year.

I'm just finding an old isolation tutorial i made a coupla years ago, i'll upload it in a minute.

Laters,

matt

Hi Matt,

thanks for your friendly welcome! Things like that instantly make you feel at home! Sphism/smilesmiley

As I see my description of "trying to learn isolations" was not very precise, but your tool is really cool. Being a dancer I use the/an isolation concept quite often while moving my body. With poi I already can move the centre of spinning to somewhere in the middle of the poi but only in a butterfly plane. But it seems to be far more tricky to to it in a simple buzzsaw because the plane is different ... (I know that is more for the technical section ;-) Still it is very uplifting to know that it should take only a little time to improve ...

Anyway I think it's great what you guys are doing here - nice page, good features, amazing stuff (if I only could open all the vids Sphism/sadsmiley ), but in general I think it is an amazing place for poiple and all those weirdos that need to do other things as well Sphism/tonguesmiley ...

Cheers,
Vanilla

Hey Vanilla,

Cool that you can isolate in butterfly plane. I'd love to be able to isolate my body parts better, know anything helpful about that?

So isolating in the wheel plane (weave plane) shouldn't be any more tricky than butterfly plane, the buzzsaw plane (Inside Wheel Plane) might be trickier because it's an Inside plane and they tend to be a little awkward since we're not so used to spinning in that position.

A really good thing to practice to learn to isolate your buzzsaw is this:

Take 1 poi
Hold the handle in 1 hand
Hold the head in the other hand

Spin the poi very slowly so that the centre point on the poi body is being isolated

(if the poi winds up around your hands just pull them out a little so this doesn't happen)

The action is exactly the same as:

Peddling a bicycle with your hands Sphism/smilesmiley

You can practice your turns like this, as well as fountains and so on.

That should help you out,

A fun thing i've been working on is isolating on the Inside Wall Planes Sphism/winksmiley

That bike-playing is really helpful - people look quite interested (Sphism/gigglesmiley
but it getting much better.

But you said you'd like to do more things with your body like isolations, and dance stuff and so on. I was just wondering because I was surfing the net quite a lot lately to look for new moves ...

What would you like to know?
Because dance and poi I think is slightly neglected topic - ok there is always the belly dance option but there must be ways to do "proper dancing" as well, things that are far more expressive than swing your butt B)
nothing wrong with this either, but not too demanding

And apart from a video from nick I found ages ago on the web, most people seem to spin quite static, therefore I was wondering whether there was some discussion going on or whether there was need for one. Therefore the question what should be in the dance forum ...

Just a few random thoughts

Hello,

I generally consider the poi to be an extension of my arms. So your wrist becomes a second elbow.

When i was younger and fitter, and partied a lot more, i used to 'dance' alot more, the poi just being an extension of my dancing (altho i was always a tech geek so i had some pretty special moves)

However, now i find myself spinning with pretty static feet, uber technical poi moves that fascinate my mind but aren't necessarily aesthetic, ie not pretty to look at.

I just get so bored by the simpler poi moves, but then i see people doing simple stuff beautifully and think wow, that looks great.

SO i guess i'm looking for a bit of inspiration to get my feet moving, i've always adored liquid footwork and i can do a little. I really enjoy trying to push waves around my body, when they end up at my hands i like to flick the energy into the poi.

I just want a new interest that i can practice whilst spinning poi so that i have something to play with, to keep me interested, and spin simple poi beautifully again.

Any tips?

m
