Comments and discussion of the Spherculist Manifesto
Keep in mind this is a first draft. I don't have the time right now to fine tune it as much as I want. I wanted to get something out for you guys now. This just seemed to keep dragging on and on and on and on. I've only begun to dabble in the fun stuff, and apart from theory, I haven't moved this much further than what was in poi goes punk. But, there's way more to come after all of this.
I'm sure there's more I ahd to say here, but I'm really drained form all the uploading labelling, inserting links and whatnot.. Bleh..
Enjoy!

Comments and discussion of the Spherculist Manifesto
First up, awesome work rev, i've finally got some time to have a look thru
i'll read a bit then write a bit of feedback:
GENERAL:
I like to see 1 point per paragraph, ie i think it will read better if we split it up into more paragraphs.
Videos: I can't see the damn videos at all, not inn firefox or IE. hmm, i'll look into this. What codec did you use? OOoo, now it's working in IE, just had to click play and wait for ages on dialup.
Illustrations: I really need to go thru and produce a load of illustrations for your text. Then eventually we will have a load of stock images that can be refered to in the text. ie embed an image from the library and discuss it.
DOJO-nize: I guess what i'm talking about is how we will take An Article like this, and turnn it into a Dojo lesson.
I'm kind of seeing this as being the article, nicely formatted, nicely indexed so you can find what you're looking for.
With images that illustrate the text ideas.
Plus video links (or embedded vids)
And links to related topics / forum posts / external links / what to learn next / etc
DEGREES OF TWIST:
Awesome, love it. Great that you've shown both notation methods and discussed the pro's & con's.
Might be good to say at teh beginning 'Here's a video of what we're gonna talk about here'. Then do the theory stuff.
INVERSIONS:
what's a reflexive axis? And how can we make it so you can just mouse over this term and a little popup box tells you what it is?
Wow. Realy good stuff. I like the way you go fully into some theory, then just as it gets confusing, add a practical example.
Adding vids for each little bit is very cool, plus in the dojo we can link to my videos as well, plus anyone else who adds them.
just gonna have lunce, will write more later

if I wasn't plagued by interruptions, I wouldn't know what to do. I forgot I had to be in Houston this last Friday and Saturday for a doctor's appt. So, I didn't get around to filming until Sunday. It turns out that my new computer setup doesn't like usb, so I'm waiting on a firewire card to come in to transfer everything off my cam. Unfortunately, I have finals next week.
The good news is that I've almost finished the bf introversion section to add to the bf inversion stuff I've already got.
Peace

I really like your method of catagorising moves because I can relate to the system with my own moves that I have never seen anyone else do. I know it's a time comsuming task but is there a way to include the glowstickers and clubbers to join? I have been a fan of wraps for a long time now and the glowies has some very nice moves never thought of in the poi world. I guess I am suggesting a union of people with vidcams and swingy things. I just rejoined glowstickers.com and I'm sure there are likeminded people there to (I'm sure you've all been there. I just want to expand a great idea.). Thay cant all be druggies
Cause I'm here

:sigh: No matter what I post here, I'm going to piss someone off.. I guess the question becomes: do I care?
Let me start by saying that this site is open to everyone. It always has been. As a stringer, I've tried to get more stringers here. Keep in mind, people can upload clips to the gallery and and such here, and link to their posts, not just link to outside sources.
One problem has always been the 'tech level' of the site. A lot of people just don't think on this deeper level, and that's ok. for example, lots of stringers are young. So, they don't really approach stringing from a conceptual level. Lots of poiple feel the same way. They all just want to spin and enjoy spinning.
One of (if not -the-) main goals of |s| was to provide detailed information about spinning. Give people a resource so that they can understand some of these terms that get thrown around, help them to decipher and learn from people's posts, and help clarify, unify, and organize the language itself. Basically, get us all speaking the language, because at the time, there wasn't any systematic way to talk poi. This separated geeks from each other, and distanced the non-geeks from almost everyone.
The manifesto came out of that mentality. I'm trying to introduce things in a fashion that is comprehensive enough to cover all the bases, while open enough to reach people on many levels. I've also tried to integrate the tutorial with enough theory to get people -thinking- poi. I tried to ease into so that people that don't normally think poi can slowly work into it. I'll skip the rant about the power of conceptualization.
I've tried many times to help other stringers. But at the time, I didn't have a camera. People thought I talked a whole lot and couldn't back it up. they couldn't understand concepts like inversions, atoms, antispin, tangles and axis turns, or hell even flowers. However, some caught on. I'm sure you know Cleric. He's a student of mine that tries to herald the good fight over there on gsc, since I got banned for advocating knowledge and openmindedness over the monotonous style of repetition that was holding the stringers back.
That being said, I'm not sure that there is much 'new' in the glowscene that needs classification. But, I'd be open to talking with you at more length on that. It would be a bit long to go into the theory of string manips here, and way more off topic than I already am. That's the only place that I can think of that needs more 'fleshing out.'
One final note though, I don't know of anything that is on one side that isn't on the other. Being a hybrid, I've seen what all both sides have to offer. Though both sides tend to focus on different things, everything bleeds over. The rate limiting step is the dispersion of cogent knowledge to the masses on each side. Which brings us back to the topic at hand.
Damn.. I've spent way too much time here.. We can talk more later.. Feel free to start up some threads..

Rev I had glanced and skimmed through your manifesto a few times before but was never able to read and go through the whole thing straight through until today and I just wanted to thank you for creating such an incredible resource.
I've been playing with insides, inswings and all that jazz alot lately and after reading this I have so much more to play with and expand upon I am not even sure where to begin. Once I digest all the stuff I've learned today I'll come back and hopefully be able to add to a discussion about all this stuff.
Thanks again and I can't wait for the bf section to come out!

Awesome I can't wait! All this inside and inversion stuff is really interesting to me. At the moment I would probably have to say it's my favorite move family to play with.
I was wondering do you have any tips that might help me learn that first degree introversion you do in that tut. That's the one move in the manifesto that I can't get to work at all. Everything else I could figure out with a few minutes of playing but patterns that involve tangled up arms or wrists have never been easy for me which is why I think this one is giving me so much trouble.
I'll be at Wildfire in CT this weekend so I'll def be bouncing all this stuff of some other spinners who might not understand insides too well yet. Hopefully we can come up with some new twists on this stuff. I'll be checking back next week.
Until then.... : )

rock on man...
on the introversion, There are two parts that you need to get this pattern right. One part is the flow of the pattern and the second is twisting of the pattern. I originally started this response with a description of the flow, but then realized that its the more awkward part to answer. So I moved that answer to the bottom and will focus first on the twisting. That way you don't have to read the whole post to find your answer if its the simple one.
if you can do the sj weave comfortably, and can enter an exit it straight away on each side, then you have the pattern down for the most part.. The catch is to get the twist correct. I'm going to start on the right side.
You're going to want the poi to inswing at the same time. Because you are spinning splittime, This will put the poi entering on opposite ends of the circle. start with your hands out to your sides (without poi).. As in, right arm straight out right, and the left arm straight out left.
Now bend your elbows, so that your right hand is close to the top of your head (12:00), and your left hand is close to your belly (6:00). Notice the (not quite) negative space. LOL. your right hand is going to want to come down into the loop made by your left arm. Likewise, the left hand will want to come up through the loop made by you right arm.. So just bring your right hand down, and your left hand up until they cross.
Here, your hands are twisted like they are supposed to be.. The rest of the pattern is like an sj weave.. Your left hand (pointing up) will pull to your left for the crossover. Your right hand will tuck under your right armpit and spin the follow portion of the crossover.
On the left side, you will pull out of it.. If you turn with your hands in the above position, then you can see how the left hand will pull down when its poi is in the top swing, and the right hand will pull up, when it is in the bottom swing. It should pull out until you are back with your hands straight out. Now, repeat this whole pattern the other way with left hand near your head and right hand near your belly.
That covers the twisting. On the offchance that you can get it to twist right, but you can't get the poi to spin through it, the I would recommend that you first get used to weaving an sj.. I think most of my vids have been taken down, but vicered later released a copy of him doing my sj weave.. I can't remember what he calls it though.. It's on hop and tribe though.. He uses a funky entrance.. I personally think its easier to enter it from a first degree inversion..
for example, start with a fwd weave.. on the left side, bring the right poi into the inversion from the top. Instead of following it with the left poi, bring the left poi across to the right side.. I do this in both my practice vid and my more recent one.. I'll see about getting my old poi goes punk clip posted.
Anyway. the point behind this pattern is that you don't have to maintain the weave.. You can enter the sj weave on the left, and exit it as you untwist on the right. Reenter on the right and exit on the left. It uses a thruwrap type mechanic, because on the left side, your right hand leads into the inversion (thus the sj weave). When you get to the right side, you will pull the right hand out of the inversion (and again, thus the sj weave).
the left hand enters on the right side, and exits on the left side in the same manner (like an thru wrap)
I know this all probably sounds confusing and off topic.. That's in part because there are a lot of ideas at work here. The sj weave is like an offset weave.. The entrance and exit as described is like a thruwrap.. However, if you do it like a proper offset weave, it exits on the same side it entered and thus exits like an inversion.. blah, blah, blah.. hahah.
However, its relevant to the topic at hand for two reasons. The first is that you need to get comfortable with that crossover of the sj weave, because that's the crossover that you will use.. The second is because the entrance and exit will help you with the flow of the pattern. They feel virtually the same.. So close in fact, that I have to really monitor what I'm doing in order to one and not the other.
I hope that isn't too fugly of an answer.. I don't want to run people off that are asking questions.. After I edit the bf stuff, I'll make a few clips to go with each of these steps, and supplement the manifesto.
