negative space and framing
negative space is a concept borrowed from art. Simply put. it's the space in the middle of something, where there is nothing. Think donut... you know if donuts were art.
framing is related to that since it involves the something doing the encasing (encasing of nothing in this case).
So taken together, we are talking about setting up situations in which there is a solid frame that creates a hole and you spin through said hole. As far as patterns go, I think body tracing makes for the best visuals with this. Basically, run your hand along your body (chest, arm, leg, whatever) and spin the poi through the hole created. You get into some pretty sick stuff once you get a flow going. basically, you just have to get comfortable spinning inswings, and learn to coordinate hand patterns with poi patterns.. I recommend practicing with one hand... then practice with the other.. then practice with them together..
alternatively, Bluecat released a vid recently where he shows off a ton of nifty negative space stuff. His vid showcases a lot patterns that are more akin to string manipulations and such. I think its in our vid forum..
Since its more of an approach to the performance aspect, you can incorporate a lot of stuff with this if you put your mind to it. It's really just creating a different way of thinking about the poi that gives you an outlet for experimentation, and the audience something fresh to watch.

Are you refering to the Spinatsh sessions? If so, isnt that a variation of a glowstick move?
negative space and framing
Yes, its in the recently released spinach stuff. I don't remember if its more spinach or what. It's posted over in the vid section I believe by MCP.
As far as the variation thing... Thats neither here nor there really. Bluecat has been interested in that stuff for a quite a while. there's some in his first (2 part) spinach session vids near the end I believe. I made the reference to string manips because thats what it resembles to me. I mean, there are lots of glowkids that have gone that route and explored that area, while relatively few outside of them. But, the association isn't -that- strong. string manips rely more on head poi, and coming up with manipulations that allow the poi to trace and spin in ways that are confusing if all you see is the poi head. Bluecats stuff is closer to pure object manipulation centered around concepts like 'negative space and framing.'
Around that time, people were really moving into more 'abstract' poi, as in, more manipulation, not so much more 'spin'. We got wibbles, and advances in contact poi, amongst other things.
so... history lesson aside.. I would say its akin to string manips as a way to confer some conceptual grounding to start your thinking process, not as categorical classification thing.
negative space and framing
thanks rev so stringmanips a glowkidsmove
and negative space and frameing is a poi move but they have the same concept
