""""driving-style"""" hybrid flower

Subject O: define "driving-style" hybrids

So far the only definition that sticks with hybrid is the one Andy gave here
Having one hand isolating and the other doing a giant, w/ one short poi, one long poi:
main visual effect beeing that when you move your hand same-time your poi-play looks like split-time, and vice-versa

The definition I'm currently considering is:
Being able to do something totally different with right & left hand, ie,
Having one hand doing a different driving-style to the other, where 'driving style' means the way you "spin" your poi. So far, I've considered 5 ways:
- pendulum,
- spin or antispin,
- giant (extended arm),
- semi-isolated, (semi-extended arm, poi is not in line with the arm: delayed or in advance ,ie, it’s a good mix between iso & extended)
- isolated
Now the whole thing is to trigger your neuronal connection to randomly & independently use these styles with either right or left arm. And this is NOT easy at first trial, cause it requires the utmost level of ambidextry !
For this I consider the following as a difficulty order, good learning process:
Right arm / Left arm (or vice versa)
- pendulum / extended arm
- pendulum / spin (or antispin)
- extended arm / spin (or antispin)
- extended arm / isolation
The last one is the current Andy’s definition, and by far the most difficult one.

I don’t think there is a need to add any extra parameters for the definition:
I mean this can be done in any plane (wall, side …), with any timing (same, quarter ..), with any degrees of crossover (arm crossed, uncrossed ..), in any relative direction (weave, butterfly)
You don’t necessarily need to hold your hand together !
The only thing I’m considering at the moment, is maybe add a 6th driving style: whip style “à la Arashiâ€Â
--------------------------------

Subject 1: define "driving-style" hybrid flower categories (body movement vs poi movement)

To classify them I've used 2 parameters:
- 2 directions of spin of poi1 vs poi2: how it looks like, weave or butterfly
- 4 body moves: I've used Nick's way to describe compound circles (arms can circle same-direction same-time, opposite-direction split-time ..)
For each of these 8 categories, you can apply different driving-style combinations

poi spinning same direction (weave effect)

1A - arms circling same-time / same-direction
e.g. 1 spin (iso or normal), 1 giant
Andy's initial hybrid if done w/ one long , one short poi (hands "seem" together, and poi-heads are split-time)
Do the long arm as slowly as possible and concentrate on the stalling of the isolated trailing-poi
I personally like it when the stalling is done on a 5th beat
2A - arms circling split-time / same-direction
e.g. 1 spin (iso or normal), 1 giant
leading-poi handle is trying to follow trailing-poi head ,
with leading-poi doing a giant, and trailing-poi doing a spin or iso
AND swap which one is doing the giant (leading poi) at each plan change (left to right wheel plane for instance)
3A - arms circling same-time / opposite-direction
e.g. 1 antispin (iso or normal), 1 giant
4A - arm circling split-time / opposite-direction
e.g. 1 antispin (iso or normal), 1 giant

poi spinning opposite direction (BF effect)

1B - arms circling same-time / same-direction
e.g. 1 antispin (iso or normal), 1 giant
2B - arms circling split-time / same-direction
e.g. 1 antispin (iso or normal), 1 semi-giant (necessary to turn the pattern in wall plane, otherwise giant for static side-plane)
3B - arms circling same-time / opposite-direction
e.g. 1 spin (iso or normal), 1 giant
4B - arm circling split-time / opposite-direction
e.g. 1 spin (iso or normal), 1 giant

so to resume, we have
8 possibilities of (poi vs body) move
2 directions of rotation (fwd/ bwd, cw/ccw)
at least 5 driving-style combinations: pendulum/giant, pendulum/spin or antispin (normal or isolated), giant / spin or antispin (normal or isolated)
and 2 hands (for who's doing which driving-style)
resulting in at least 160 possibilities.

tips/hints/personal thought>
- the slower you can go with the giant circling arm
the more time you have to spin your other hand around
So difficult point is to slow down your left-arm giantSphism/winksmiley
- more to come !!
1A & 2A are the most difficult to play with
2A goes on well with playing on same timing
1A goes on well with speed change weaving (lots of stalling / polyrythm)
3A, 4A & all the Bs go on well with flowers & compound circles
3B & 4B are spin version of the 3A & 4A
1B is somehow the visual "complement" of the 4A/3A

currently I'm :
not bad at 1A (see Master House for these)
bad at 2A (see Ronan or Yoshiki for these)
good at the others

Subject 2> what to play with, to make your patterns look badass

0. Of course play w/ "A" & "B"s in any plane: side plane, wall plane .. horizontal !
learn how to transition them with basic compound circles

1. swap driving-styles at any position along the hand's circling path

2. degrees of inversion:
everything that can be done un-crossed can be done with crossed arm,
so try "A"s & "B"s with crossed arm
there's 2 ways to cross your arms, so try both, and mostly try crossing/uncrossing at plan change (ie like in a 3b weave)

3. moving one hand in & out of the pattern (I've only seen it for the "A"s thought it should be applicable to "B"s aswell)
as the giant as to be very slow vs the spin/antispin, let's use that timing, to move the other hand out of the pattern & back in

4. one long / one short poi (olos on HoP thread)
refer to the HoP thread for further talk/drawings

5. play with # 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 at the same time Sphism/winksmiley

I'll edit the post in the future cause there are lots of things missing .. and I gotta go !
Enjoy, and good play Sphism/winksmiley

Matt> maybe I should copy/paste the subject dealing w/ definition into the "encyclopoidia omnimodus" ??

Hey Olive,

thanks for that, hybrids are really nice. And really weird, and pretty hard.

It's so tricky to do a slow isolation and a quick giant at th esame time.

When andy first told me about these he was using different length poi, i think isolating a long poi and giant short poi, this helps with the timing.

i'll be updating the encyclopoidia system soon so we can all keep it up to date.

gotta run, but will play with all this and get back to ya Sphism/smilesmiley
