Probot video

I've heard a rumour that there's fire spinners in the video for Probot's "Shake Your Blood." Is this true? I can't find a version my server will run online.

Never heard of it.
I wonder if poi will ever be as mainstream as skateboarding... probably not, no brand name to assciate with it.

The rumour is indeed true.
I've seen the video several times on music tv stations such as Kerrang, MTV2 and Scuzz.
The video has loads of young women in black leather/latex (maybe both) doing various things. There is a couple of clips of one doing some reverse 3bt weave with fire poi, also some fire breathing, and another poi move (the one where you do butterfly but with one arm in front of you, one behind, then switching arms after each beat (mexican wave??? dunno))

Also the song is good Sphism/gigglesmiley Dave Grohl, Lemmy and some other guy.

I think there is a Birney Spears video with a fire staff in it.

In Runaway Jury theres a fire breather and a fire poi spinner at the park in one of the scenes. I think the poi spinner has double headed chains, but not entirely sure as they didnt zoom up. There mighta been a staff there too but i dont remember

I'd like to know the world record for the fastest weave. Sphism/gigglesmiley
I bet I can do it faster then you.

I applied to the guiness book of records once to enquire about poi world records. This was about a year ago and their were none.

So they asked me to devise one that i could complete and they would test my and if i passed then i would be the world record holder.

I said i'd spin as fast as i could and they could calculate the speed, that would be the record. But they weren't up for it.

So i said i'd do as many different moves as i could in a set time, but they weren't up for that either.

They said i had to spin 1 move for as long as possible and I could do anything that was on home of poi ~ cos that's like the official site.

and i guessed that i could probably do one of those moves for maybe 4 hours straight but the problem would be more about drinking enough water and figuring a way to go to the toilet, than it would be about spinning poi.

So i offered to do a 5 beat weave and even started practicing to see just how long i could spin for.

Try it, it's superb practice and a great meditation. Even just 1 hour of spinning a 5beat weave (or any other pattern that takes your fancy) totally trains your muscles how to use the LEAST ENERGY, which means your moves will be tight.

So we never decided exactly what the record should be because it just seemed rediculous. I would have prefered to do a set number of moves in the quickest time, or the most number of moves.

I figured I could have made a bit of a party outta the whole thing down on brighton beach and open it up to everyone to try.

But then it kinda became this idea of a poi competition. Which just seemed like a really bad idea. Because how can somebody judge that? The fasest, the most elegant, the longest stamina, the most known moves, i dunno.

Anywho, the record is still there for the taking i believe, but hey, everyones equal i guess.

¦m¦

I will try that, maybe I can get my BTB weaves really clean.
I don't like the sound of a poi competition either, other then the fastest weave as it's just a very silly sounding thing from HoP.
Can you really imagin trying to count all the moves done in a specifc amout of time thouugh, and the disputes about them, and if we started doing hyperloops and airwraps....

All the Suicide Girls look the same to me. Even if they are fire spinning Sphism/tonguesmiley

I like Lemmy, but don't reckon the song's anywhere near his usual standard. Dave Grohl wearing a Motorhead shirt in the background made me cringe! 8O

I think that you can download the vid at the suicide girls webpage... One of my friends is one of them and wants to learn fire poi... but to be honest I find it a little odd that someone wants to just learn to look cool - there's just so much more to spinning - or am I just crazy...

I actually enjoy spinning more when no one is around. I haven't spun with another spinner around though.

That is very wrong. You do it because you want to learn it, not because you want to look cool. Let's send her a Burberry cap... then she'll be "cool."

Looking cool was an unexpected side effect for me Sphism/winksmiley Besides, it comes from getting into it to the point where you're playing with your poi so much that you can flow and do crazy stuff while making it look easy.

And similarly, I don't understand people who just get into it to spin fire, and never really do anything else.

Got that right Spiralx. I knew a guy once that decided to try out poi for the first time. Lit them on fire......he was such a moron. And you can guess what happened to him. Serves him right. He had absolutely NO respect for the art and that ticked me off. He didnt even want to actually learn it he was like "oh I bet the girls will like seeing me get creamed"..........errrrr........aaaaaaaaanyways. OH my word......haha if you got into that guiness book Matt,.... I'd be so stoked hehe Sphism/gigglesmiley Keep going man!

I actually really enjoy spinning alone too or teaching/being taught by other people... Although a few months ago I mentioned that I was interested in it and loads of people I know said they were too and to take them clubbing...

So I did and I was just soooo nervous for the first hour, I was really scared of hitting people. What surprised me though was that the people who said they could do it came up and grabbed the poi off me and started swinning them madly around their heads and hitting people... there was a whole cue of people waiting to have a go but no-one wanted to take any technique tips and all they wanted was to try and look cool... regardless of the fear in the eyes of people around them...

nd what really sucks is that I took my tennis ball poi that are really pretty with long UV white and purple tails and someone must have smashed them really hard against something because the ball split... It's really differcult to fix as the ball is sewn in a pocket so I learnt my lesson... And although I now have a reputation as the poi guru with my friends I'm never taking them out again...

Some people just piss me off... Maybe next time I'll take some fire ones, light them and let anyone who wants to, have a go... but I'm not that mean...

Although to be honest a couple of people got back to me and were very serious to learn... and not just for the coolness factor... strangely these weren't the poi grabbing fiends and many didn't paticipate...So it wasn't all, just marginally a bad experience...

I though glowstringing was big in clubs? I found my way to poi through electronic music, although not in clubs. Sphism/gigglesmiley

Well, I think I got into it because I've always enjoyed new, interesting experiences... and if it looks like I can light myself on fire in the process, that's even better. Poi is meditative for me, but I do also want to look good doing it -- I've seen some people who know a lot of technical tricks look aweful, and I've seen some people who only know a few tricks look great. I'd rather look good. There's something about spinning with fire that makes it extra special -- the sound, the heat, having the oxygen being sucked out of the air around you (don't believe me? do the buzzsaw with fire.)

I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the extra attention I get from women after I perform. That's not why I got into it... it's not why I try to keep my planes tight... why I try to flow... but hey, it's a nice side benefit!

I seem to recall having some notions of 'looking cool' when I started out but mostly being in it for the fun/challenge. And while I'd be lying if I said I didn't care about looking good while I spin, that's definately not why I do it now.

It's kinda sad the difference in people's reactions depending on what you're spinning (fire/glowythings vs. socks/tennis balls/etc.). I spent at least half a year spinning stuff during lunch at school everyday to practice, without any sort of compliments or ego stroking. The minute people saw me do it with glowsticks, compliments. (Yes, that is a generalization.)

Predictable, understandable, but still less than the ideal. That who flash vs. substance thing.

How about the biggest number of twists in a weave for your recoed? I bet you could get up to, like, 13 with enough practice! Sphism/gigglesmiley
