MsdeMeener aka Rosminah

Right, a proper introduction, inspired by Spiralx who said hi to me in a different forum.
I'm Rosminah, sometimes called Meener, or Minah or Pashminah, or Bean. I'd vaguely been aware of poi spinning for some time but it didn't really grab my attention until I saw it close up at Burning Man 2001. I have to admit I wasn't *all* that impressed at the beginning because my first serious viewing session was of a novice doing fire. naked. It was on the Playa in front of a big crowd. It wasn't pretty watching him double over in pain on a relatively basic move.
But later that night I saw a small group of enthusiastic kids off the playa playing with glow-stick poi. The moves were by no means complex, but they were incorporating these simple spins with body movement, they danced, cheered on their friends and they were clearly having fun. That's what did it for me. I thought, "wow, if only I could just do forwards and backwards, that's all I'd EVER need."
But I left for England to go to grad school at Reading just a few days after Burning Man and I was marooned from that lifestyle. I desperately wanted to learn poi, but I didn't even know what it was called at that time. Meeting some London spinners would have been perfect, but I was clueless and had to concentrate on my studies anyway. In any case, it's nice to make the acquaintance of some UK poiple here, albiet a bit late.

So, long story short, I'm back in US. In Feb 2003 I run into Orbit at an art car workday in the Bay Area. He'd returned from Thailand with a number of practice poi and I beg a pair off him. And that's the beginning of the end. All that basics I've learned are attributed to him and some solitary time in front of a mirror with the HOP lessons repeating in the background.
I enjoy spinning a lot, but it's not an all-consuming activity for me. I hula hoop too, and have vague wishes for a fire hoop or fire fans. My poi are accessories to dancing and moving to music. I think fire is pretty and I know people are mesmerised by it, but it's not terribly important to me. I enjoy using tails or glowsticks because I can wear what I want and have a more relaxed body and thus flow better with my poi and music.
I'm not terribly technically advanced, but I feel I have a good balance between spins and body movement which make for a nice overall "package."
And that's me. It's nice to virtually meet you all. I will be at Burning Man this year, have plans to attend at least one day of the Pismo Fire Drum event in mid-April, and might be at Lake Merritt Easter Sunday in Oakland. Time to wrap this up. Ciao!

Hey Meener,

Nice to virtually meet you to. Or perhaps we have met. If not then we should have. I first saw poi at burningman after i lived in SF. Straight after I had to go back to Uni in Egham, surrey ~ less than an hour from Reading. I had no way of learning for six months until my friend Laura came over from SF and gave me a set of poi for my birthday.

I learnt loads off HOP before bumping into a load of poiple in london at a squat party (Alli & Nick and Tony & Cath ~ back in the day)

I have played on and off since then and taught a whole load of poiple, that's what i do best ~ I've never been into performance as such.

Anywho, spent loads of time at noonish juggling in center camp 2001 and 2002 and got to spin in the conclave on burn night 2002, I spun with pyrosutra from seattle.

Went to Samothraki 2003 and really wanna be at bm2004

Set up this site right at the beginning of 2004 and now there're 400 of us.

That brings us to today.

Welcome aboard,

¦m¦

Howdy Meener!

Ms. DeMeener! Oh, I remember when she was just a poi novice, picking up moves at a crazy voracious rate. In 2 weeks, she knew more moves than I did after 6 months!

Now, she's breaking hearts... driving boys crazy with her sexy style.

Hello back to everyone who said hi, and thank you for the warm welcome.
I'm glad to know that there are people here who see more to spinning than fire fire fire. I'm rather attached to my hair, I'd like to keep it. Sphism/smilesmiley Sometimes I worry that spectators are so caught up in the fire that it upstages the person wielding it. Hearing, "Wow, that was cool!" doesn't make me smile inside as much as hearing, "Wow, that was beautiful."
But, yes, I do understand and respect the power of fire. Sphism/smilesmiley

I was at Reading from Sept 2001-Oct 2002, studying for my MSc in Botany.
I often took the train up to Richmond as I've got friends at Kew, and I do believe I passed through Egham. Is there a Waitrose right across the street from the train station? If so, I actually often alighted there to do some shopping, then would hop on the next train 15-30 minutes later. Ok, maybe that was Farringdon or Farrington, it's been a while. Needless to say, it would have been fabulous to have met some of you while I was still there.
But let's talk about the here and now. Thank you, Matt, for putting together this site. I've been browsing some of the videos and am slowly *very slowly* working on the move you call the 5-beat impossible weave.

And as for this Miss Demeanor shirt lurking somewhere in New Zealand, email me, and let's talk exchange. Sphism/smilesmiley
Orbit, I'll see YOU this weekend!

Hello.

Haven't spun fire myself, want to try it sometime. I'm with you on the difference between "Wow, that was cool!" and "Wow, that was beautiful."

Glad to meet you (virtually, it seems).

Hi MsDeMeenor  How you doin?

I'm kinda with you on the fire thing, spinning is beautiful enough without having fire attached, tails and glowies look pretty sexy too! I only spin fire once in a while, and perhaps at festivals etc. Which reminds me....did you go to the Reading festival while you lived there? If not you missed a wonderful event with quite a few spinners in attendance.

See you around! :37

Bug

Absolutely, fire shouldn't ever be the main focus  As for tea bags though......
