I used to live in the states but that will fall on deaf ears for many in england.

ANywho. Dreds. Firstly the most important thing is to separate the hair into groups as accurately as you can ~ get a friend to do it. If they start out with bits crossing from one to the other then it'll be a right pain to separate in 6 months. Think about how fat you want them, maybe fatter at the back than at the front etc.

Back combing never worked for me. I found that they just dredded at the end and not at the roots ~ but i had pretty long hair at the time.

The Method: Take the separated hair and mix the strands together, muddle them all up. Then split the seletion in two and pull apart so that you get lots of tiny little knots right down by the roots. This is the most imortant place to make good locks because it will determin how they grow.

Repeat this process of mixing up the strands and then pulling apart over and over. Now you can use wax to help this~ gotta bee natural ~ no gunk ~ Don't go over board, just rub a little in your fingers until it's warm and then apply evenly. Too much and it'll all go tits up.

So you should be forming a fairly round dred. Make sure that it's tight, imagine tying tight knots over and over, building it up gradually.

Once you get to the end you can either dred all the way to the end or you can a leave a little curl of undreded hair. If you want ot dred right ot the end try fuzzing up the last little bit ~ then hold it in thumb and fore finger and rub it in your other palm. Should go into a tight little ball which you can flatten out into a nice end.

Also you might wanna add a couple of little rope braids mid way down the dred to add a bit of texture. Maybe even tie in some beads or other stuff. I've got a silver ring in one of mine and some little rope brraids here and there.

Put the effort in now and you won't need to touch them for ages. Rush the initial stages and you'll be fighting against them for years.

Happy dredin,

Ahh yes , happy 4/20 Sphism/gigglesmiley

woot right on Rovo Sphism/smilesmiley I've been wanting to get those

Had mine back combed in around Christmas. There finally started to come together a bit now, as in not falling out and requireing exssive work to look decent. There's still kind of fuzzy. Wooly things are great too, Just sort of rub them on your head in a clockwise direction then pull all your dreads off each other, and it works great for the roots.
Anyone know if castor seed oil is bad for dreads? I've got wax with that in it.

a great site full of helpfull tips on the matter of dreads.

On the topic of what wax to use, use a natural wax, so one not containing petrolatum. I'm using Knotty boy, containing Beeswax and hempseed oil and it works great Sphism/smilesmiley
Oh and one other tip i can give you, section your hair before people start to back-comb or twist it in. It's a little time consuming in the beginning, but it'll save you loads of time afterwards.
I didn't heed to those warnings and even though they don't look all that bad, the loose hairs everywhere and crosslinking of dreads still make me crazy after almost a year now Sphism/winksmiley

But I'm having a question about dreads as well, what's the best way according to you guys to help tightening the roots of dreads, having a bit of problems on that part....

I found rubbing a wooly thing to work wonders with roots, but all your dreads make a big ball after so you need to pull them apart and stuff.

I started gettin my dreads put in but stopped and decided to wait about a month. I figure I'll be going to alot of shows this summer and i'll be traveling around alot so it will be a good time to start them. For now i need to find a new job before i change my hair

aw. I figure dreads aren't the best thing to go to a job interview with anyway.

blah after two hours in the pool my dreds went to hell. I'm putting a good few of them back in, after my course is over I'm going to pretty much put use the wool rubbing method on everything

Should be getting my fake ones soon... www.spookylocks.co.uk
They'll be purple, lime green and white, yummy!!!

Fake dreads look nice, but they're grim on the person you're going out with Sphism/confusedsmiley

[quote="Spanner"]Don't forget your hat/durag when you're using fire then - that Knotty Boy will go up in flames like a shot, as I know only too well Sphism/gigglesmiley

Dax Wax - my dreads were practically made of it.

and don't use too much conditioner early on or they'll just slip out of the dreads and go all normal again!

People.. now listen here.. dreads are the coolest type of hair there is, IF YOU DO IT RIGHT! the most important thing is to NEVER I repeat NEVER use stuff like wax and similar. they won't look any good at all I promise. instead let someone use a crochet hook to pull them together. you can treat them as normal hair then and belive me, they won't separate!
stay tuned Sphism/gigglesmiley

I am gonna start lettin my hair dread naturally i have been going about a week and let me tell you its kinda gross and its gonna take a while but it'll be worth it. I think I'll appreciate them alot more this way. I still might get my hair backcombed in if i just can't take it any longer but we'll see. I have many many concerts and festivals to attend this summer. So i won't mind if i look a lil gross for a while. Oh and how does this crochet method work?

lettin em dread naturally is all well & good, but if you want them even vaguely neat then don't bother. They can look cool, but they will be all diferent sizes and really lumpy, you have to spend a lot more time looking after them, like threading in loose bits and stuff.

if you're getting dreads cos they're easy to look after then it's well worth getting them actually put in by someone cos it'll save you strife in the long run.

Got myself a nice wool cap today. Hopefully it'll help out, it'll at least make them look a little less fuzzy.
