Planar Control
So I was thinking the other day about how shotty my plane work is.. now planr control is probably one of the most useful skills that you can pick up in poi, because so many things hinge on it.. After all if you have precise control over your pois spin, it will improve not only your current skills but your ability to form/learn new ones..
for example.. one of the things I do to help learn control is spin really heavy poi... now I don't mean spin heavy poi and then spin regular poi.. I mean spin heavy poi during some of your practice sessions.. I call them control builders.. It's kinda like lifting weights for poi.. I find that as I spin with heavier poi, I tend to form better planes.. not at first.. but gradually.. It occured to me one day when I was spinning that the harder it was for me to spin, the better I got at it.. That is to say that my btb weave was crap, but after re-learning it (it took a while to transfer some moves over) with heavy poi, my ability to spin my lighter stuff imporved dramatically.. planewise..
So what are some things that you guys do to help boost that control? And remember.. practice, practice , practice only helps if its proper practice, proper practice, proper practice..

Planar Control
After spinning sock poi and then going to glowsticks I've noticed the same thing. Thats also how i fixed my buzzsaw. I kept doing it with sock poi cause it is alot easier to keep the planes. Then when i switched to glowsticks i had no problem keeping it straight and parallel.

speaking of planes ive just realised thats whenever i do any thing over my head or shoulders like the windmill or stuff like that the planes go a bit haywire  but i cant seem to fix it. i put stones in my tennis balls after hearing your heavy poi idea but that just wears me out it doesnt seem to help in that department although the under the leg moves are automatically much easier with the stones, cheers!!
ooh that ryhmes
so i tried messing about with my hands for getting the planes right but im a bit puzzeled at the moment. advice would be nice

I have a really clean windmill and double windmill well i think i do at least
Try looking at your hands one should be coming in front of your face right as the others going behind. It kinda makes a figure eight as if you were freehand glowsticking. Actually I've never realized how freehand glowsticking has helped my poi spinning until now. Interesting.....

to be honest my windmillisn't my cleanest move.. its still comes at an angle behind me.. kinda like my btb butterfly at times.. its got to do with hand position..
the heavy thing will wear you out faster... but remember this.. its building your muslces and helping to stretch you out by havingmore centrifugal force pulling on the muscles.. so it stretches you without stretching.. just be careful not to overwork yourself.. Iknow I almost pulledmy shoulder out when I went from glowsticks to monkey fists for behind the back.. now I spin the fists like they aren't anything.. just when you start to get tired.. switch back to a lighter poi.. you'll feelsloppy because they are so light.. In fact depending on how heavy your new poi are, you might not be able to feel the old poi that much.. but you should notice cleaner planes within a week of heavier or more resisted poi..
also freehanding does help a lot with poi.. and poi helps a lot with freehanding.. in fact.. poi is how they use to teach people to dance..because the poi (via centrifugal force) pulls your hands in most of the directions.. I think of it as poi leading you.. which is how we pick up on some moves.. like learning to turn your weave.. but basically, you should try some of the poi patterns without poi.. it was hard for me to do, becausei'm lame and have not talent.. but after I got more used to spinning poi I could spin motions without poi and you'd be amzed howmany things cross over.. weave/corkscrew and figure 8's, traces and gumbies are directly related to variosu freehand patterns.. isolations and the orbit type stuff the freehanders do.. crazy..
