Welcome to the recommendations thread; seen a great film? Read a great book? Heard a great new album? Share with your fellow spherculists ![]()
My first suggestion is that if anyone can they go and listen to some Peter Mulvey- he plays some fantastic acoustic blues/folk- I've already imported 2 albums, and the third is in my Amazon wish list ![]()

Skill: Chi Gung (Qigong) ~ It's the foundation to chinese martial arts like kung fu and is simply fabulous. It's all to do with moving energy around the body, stick a couple poi in there and you'll be super slick.
Book: The Kybalion by The Three Initiates ~ This is all about Hermetic Philosophy, it's short, sweet and succinct. Get a copy from amazon.
Film: Spirited Away ~ The best film i've seen recently by far. Japanese animation, trippier than alice in wonderland, a must see.

For books I'd definitely recommend anything by Chuck Palahnuik, the guy responsible for Fight Club; his older ones like Choke and Invisible Monsters are very funny, but his more recent ones (Diary, Lullaby) have a significantly darker twist. And for a good giggle I'd say Terry Pratchett; the Discworld series, or in particular Good Omens.

Any skateboarding video that involves Rodney Mullen. At least the freestyle stuff he does, is worth watching, even if you don't really like skateboarding.
Recomendations
I don't skate but I've seen much Mullen stuff- general response is :30

best tv has to be spaced,
film: true romance (tarantino's first screenplay directed by tony scott (top gun) quality actors and acting throughout, esp. scene between christopher walken and dannis hopper
book: bill hicks: love all the people but watch some of his standup first
however my favourite stand-up is eddie izzard, less political makes it funnier in my mind watch dressed to kill if you want to wet yourself laughing!

I have had an amazing year of reading, since I finished grad school:
Jonathan Safran Foer - Everything is Illuminated
Nicole Krauss - Man Walks into a Room
Jeffrey Eugenides - Middlesex
Jonathan Franzen - The Corrections
The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got that Way - Bill Bryson
I was blown away by every single one of these books - it made me remember why I used to like to read (too many finance text books can definitely kill one's love of literature.)

Must give most of this a try
Well , as to be expected from me
Here goes
Books: J.R.R Tolkien's works, all of them. Silmarillion is currently my uber fav, love the rich and deep culture of the Elves and it gives you a real insight as to the not so simple evil of Morgoth and even Sauron, whom many believed a simple evil from the films, but not so if you look into it.
Films: You guessed it. LOTR Trilogy, fantastic, amazing, a flawless jewel. One that I would think a memory of Silmarils, if you'll pardon the tag line.
Music: Yet again. The LOTR soundtracks. Same as above. But also the live sets from Dj Tiesto, this one live set Paul Oakenfold in burmingham, mmmm,,, my faaavorite... Sasha, digweed, nick warren. Also this awesome music by Christophe Goze, it's AWESOME and I dont really know what genre, its got this drumming similar to middle-eastern stuff, must check that out
Skills: Poi, Yoga and Gymnastics.
Theres my 2 cents

Oh, forgot to mention A Clockwork Orange; don't bother with the film, it's not quite got the same twist as the book!! I also loved the first Matrix, but they got progressively worse. And I've watched South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut three times in the past week... hooray for peurile stupidity. To quote Cartman, "Why the hell not? It's not hurting anybody. Fuck fuckety fuck fuck fuck!"

Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse blew me away... bit heavy at first but you should give it a go if you havent yet.
The I-Ching too. All i can say is it is amazing, ive found it real helpful i im not even that good at reading it yet. Im a bit too rational and probably a bit sceptical with most divination but honestly the I is worth a looksy.
Films.... saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tother day and loved it. Its crazily shot and Jim Carey is real good in it - hes not trying to be funny and he comes off real well. Got Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst in too and they win for me! Grrr

I recommend you all go on a tour of old Quebec city. It's an amazing place.
I also recommend Daft Punk's Homework which is a really cool album. I'm not sure what style it is but it's cool. No idea why they called a track "Rock n' Roll."

But to whomever asked - the first four are modern American novels. I think "The Corrections" might be, in fact, THE great american novel. The Mother Tongue is a book about the histroy of hte English Language - and it's a fascinating (and funny) read.
Happy reading all ... I'm currently working on "Life After God" by Douglas Copeland - 'll let you know how it goes.

Poikid: I love Jeeves and Wooster, plus i'm sure it's either set in Sidmouth, or they go there. Sidmouth is in devon in the south west of england. It's just down the road from where i grew up. I went to school there when i was 8 to 13
