Tutorials on how to make your own poi's
ok, so I have people keep tellin me to swap my tail-poi for sock-type ones.. Well, let's go do it, but guys, is it really just a regular sock with a tennisball in it or what are you spinning?
:
I'm as green as one can be when it comes to different poi-types (pros, cons etc.) ![]()
I'm sure I could make some sock poi's in notime but for them to become good, well.. some tips and a picture would be great. ![]()

Tutorials on how to make your own poi's
Hello Allian,
What kind of face could you hide under your bag ?...
Have a look at here: http://www.spherculism.com/poiple/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=136
You'll have an answer. My sock pois are made of socks (of course), and the weight at the end of each is a balloon filled with rice.

mine too are jus plain ol socks with some rice-filled baloons in the bottom..they work really well..and you can make them as heavy or light as you like by adjusting how much rice you use

Hey Allian
Yup, I just went to a store , picked up some over the knee socks cause I tend to spin longer strings, stuffed a tennis ball inside and tied a knot for a handle
Been using them ever since
Have fun!

Dunno guy's sounds a bit to hard..
Thx
I seriosly thought there was a bit more to it but what the.. - easy and simple!!

Mine are just long stripey (don't they have to be?) socks with a coupla small juggling balls in the end, I found they span a bit better if I made them a little different to normal.
Step 1: Turn the socks inside out
Step 2: Drop weight inside them
Step 3: Tie knot just above weight (as close as possible!)
Step 4: Turn socks inside out again (back to normal)
Step 5: Tie knot(s) for handle(s)
This might have been cuz my socks had a kink for an ankle and this seemed to get used up by this knotting around, but when I span them before they seemed to have a lot more drag than when I made them like this!
Hope this helps someone out there

Thanks pollenski!
I've been a bit annoyed at the drag I have on mine , just a wee bit, but I shall give that 'n a try, see if it helps. See ya!

Should try that later. Thanks for the ankle removing tip.

1) tie a knot on the poi end ONLY if you need faster poi... the drag from the poi not being tied helps build the endurance of a beginner AND it helps keep the poi spinning slower.. which helps you to learn some moves.. I tied a knot on my poi end and then untied them rather quick because they spun like regular poi.. and I guess I didn't really see the point in spinning socks if they spun like my regular poi.. hehe.. just my thoughts though..
2) home made poi require nothing more then being macgyver stewart.. you can make them out of anything.. t shirt.. coconuts... wallet chains.. anything.. the more creative the better I say... its a jedi thing.. you know.. you must build/design it yourself..

I've tied a knot above the ball in my new socks I picked up this weekend. Not really noticing a huge difference so far... although these ones are a bit longer in general which I'm currently enjoying.

Mine are just over my arm length unstretched (ie. not spinning) so they're pretty long and so lots of drag unless i shorten them anyway - the extra knot made it almost possible for me to keep them in perfect split-time, cuz otherwise the stretchiness makes it too diffiult, i normally hold em a bt further down anyways for a different style and only have them full length for onehanded stuff cuz i think that always looks amazing with longer strings but hey they're still quite new socks so lots more stretch in them atm so problems might g with age

I never understood the stretchy socks thing...
mine are like plain socks.. the kind you wear with boots.. real thick cotton.. . they didn't stretch too much.. in fact the straching made it possible to tie a knot for a handle.. but other then that they are thick whcih causes lots of resistance.. if I tie knot on the poi head end.. they spin with next to no resistence.. but I like the resistence.. the only complaint I have is that you can't trace well or bounce wrap with them.. but again the reistence helps me learn SOOO much.. because it goes slower.. and isolations are a cakewalk..

grrr... just been thinking i wonder what my socks are made of now and my flatmates taken them down the park... very stretchy material though, from kneehigh/thighhigh (on a midget) girls socks.... hmmm, has anyone ever seen a midget spin poi? Would look great to do a double act with fire with a midget with some really short poi whilst using long yourself, lots of different sized circles - imagine a midget hyperloop....

must stop obsessing about midgets

considering I had this displeasure of midget wrestling at the party I went to this past weekend.. I've noticed that 6" (glowstick length) to a midget is almost as longer then the string needed for poi like mine scaled down.. mayeb if they had 4"sticks..
dude I'd teach a midget poi.. why not..
midgets are poiple too you know..

Mine are just socks with balls droped into them, a bit strechy but great fun.
