fire poi materials

hey all, am looking to make my own set of fire poi cuz am always borrowing off people and anyway, I want to make some so there! Since I imagine a lot of you have made your own poi I was wonderin if I could borrow your knowledge for where to get some cheap wick and cheap chain and finally whether ball chain or link (or just the thick wire?) is better? Also has anyone got a form of fire poi more akin to sock poi than tennis? Am thinking of making some with a 'grippable' chain somehow and was wondering if anyone else had done so, cuz I want to try doing some throws with fire for the first time and don't like catching if there are only finger loops on the end!

Any ideas and help would be quality and you'll be my bestest friend and invited to all my parties and.... well I'll be pretty stoked anyway!

Ta

If you're coming down to spin fire on wednesday (Which you should cause it was damn good last week) speak to tim. He makes all his own stuff (staff, Poi) an I'm sure he could advise you somewhat.

did you had a go with my fire poi with the wooden balls for handles so you could throw them? strange but I'm getting to like them!

Hey, yeah had a go with the wooden handled fire ones, too short for my liking but I did like the novelty, could swing em round well quick, but don't think I tried them lit. Should be down wednesday but my mum and brother are in town for a week so not 100% positive... then again, this means i have a car to go get some paraffin... I'll be there Sphism/smilesmiley

as for handles i was thinking of having a long, thinnish handle made of rbber or something, maybe jut a rubber coating on a bit of wire coathanger or something...i'm just bothered about having a small handle to catch in the dark (for fire).

Might bring up my special flashy glow poi on wednesday also Sphism/smilesmiley

See ya later dude

Oh you've just reminded me. I need to get some glow in the dark sock poi. It'll stop people walking into them in the dark and I'll be able to catch them better (hopfully)

Fire Poi construction:

I've made all my own fire poi. I basically use the same set up everytime and it's worked well so far.

For wicking - I use Kevlar wicking (it can be ordered on line from HoP, or you can find it in specialty juggling stores - but I don't know where you live so I don't know whether it's feasible to get your hands on any.)

I fold the Kevlar "cathedral" style, and put an eyebolt through. I attach the eyebolt to the BALL CHAIN (it's the BEST in my opinion - you can grab it, it doesn't tangle in wraps, etc etc etc.)

Handles are leather - cut about an inch wide and folded over, about 5" in length - that gives me more room to shorten the grip, as well.

I'm looking for a link to a site that lays this all out for you ... I'll post it when I find it.

I got some fire poi at last Sphism/smilesmiley Unfortunately wasn't there to pick and choose cuz were bought as a birthday present by relatives, but got the basics in, tho might get some ball chain if the wires i've got get too bent, will be spinning tomorrow for sure
