Sock to fire...
Hi friends ![]()
How much of your sock spinning do you convert to firepoi?
I try more or less everything i learn whith fire as well. The problem is that some tricks looks better whith socks.
Take throws for an exampel. They look awsome whith sock but if you are spinning fire in the middle of the night you have to throw the poi realy high to get a effect out of it. Spinning in dusk or dawn is better becouse the audiens can see the chain and handel better.
Happy spinning

I dunno if I'd go that far... I'd say its noticeable because peopl notice my isolations.. as few and far between as they are... and I use black strings with my glowsticks..
I think some people just don't care for it..
and I'd say you can do much mroe with socks then fire... I can do most everything Iknow with socks. andI doubt I could do lots of that with fire... but I dunno.. I don't really light up..
Sock to fire...
I think I can translate most of my moves from sock to glowstick to fire. Of course theres alot of wraps you can't do with fire that you can do with glowsticks and socks. This isn't to say these wraps can't be done with fire it's just I don't want to risk a serious burn if something tangles up. I also only spin fire with moves i know i can do without messing up but thats a given.
Sock to fire...
I don't spin fire but there's some stuff I do with my socks that I would never do with fire.
Sock to fire...
Hmm intresting.
As a follow up question. Why dont you spin with fire?
My fire spinning has taken huge steps forward since i stared spining socks. Its been a wonderful job to translate socks move to stiff chains. You have to be so precise with chains.
Thats my side of it.
Sock to fire...
Spinning fire's great fun but i found the novalty wore off after a year or so.
I find that there's way too much ego with fire spinners. If you spin a dirty pair of socks then you have to be pretty slick to impress anyone, with fire you can just light up and spin really really fast and everyone goes ooooohhhh-aaaaaahhhh.

HAHAAHAHAH Socks for pro... Wonderful
I see your point Matt. The thing is I still really enjoy fire and try real hard to do more then just the regular things. Its a very smal amount of fire spinning that i see that is creativ, mostly people swing for the effect of fire as you said. But when i see someone spinning with style and emotion it tickels my pyro-gene.
90% of my time i spin socks but i spin them to be better at the 10% fire i spin.

I like that.
Can't see why anyone on HoP would ger mad at you for that. though.
I don't spin fire because I'm 16 and until now my parents wouldn't let me, I just haven't bought any equipment, not really sure where to get some.
Sock to fire...
Matt, that was excellent.
Achluo, I'm guessing some people took it the wrong way. I mean, if you spun fire all the time would you want somebody coming along and saying that it's easy to impress people with fire even without too much skill?
I've gotta agree though. Firsthand experience, you see. I'd spin stuff around school all the time without impressing anyone, but the minute I used some glowsticks and spun pretty lights around everyone loved it.
Doesn't discount fire/glow/pretty things, they're lovely. But what you spin has nothing to do with how good you are.
And as for not spinning fire, I haven't tried it yet. Because I have parents.
Sock to fire...
At the risk of pissing everybody off - I love the fire. And now it's finally summer - so I can start trying to get all my indoor sock practice translated to my chains. And all the parties I'm planning to go to for the next few months are outside simply so that I can spin fire. I love it. I think it's beautiful and I'd do it with or without an audience. Although, maybe I'm not as spiritually enlightened as all y'all, but I absolutely love an ooohing and aaahing crowd ... does this make me shallow and not worthy of spherculism?? I showed my mom fire spinning for the first time on Friday - and getting an excited applause actually made my chest puff up.
Besides, I'm not a pro, so I need to use the fire. I can't do a nine beat, inverted, behind-the-back, release, under-the-leg, over-the-head, butterfly weave ... so I'll have to stick to big shiny and/or hot things to trick people into thinking I know what I'm doing.
To answer the initial question, though, I try to translate everything I learn on socks (or other practice toys) to fire eventually. But it usually takes a few weeks/months of mastering something unlit before I'll even try it on fire. That said .... I think I've finally nailed the behind the back weave with flames this weekend.
kisses and hugs to one and all - whatever their opininons on the fire questions. I hope y'all don't send me back to HoP because I like it.

I dont think there should be any discrimination against fire spinners of any level. I myself love watching fire and knowing the poi am not impressed with people by their skill alone. Never am. It's how they do the poi in my opinion. You can always see if someone is spinning fire specifically to show off, or if they are doing it because they love it. I've seen some people that could only do the basics, but they were having so much stinking fun that it instantly made you happy for them and give them respect. There shouldnt be an issue of the better way to express your art. Wherever the love leads you, be it socks, fire, glows, whatever the equipment or skill. If your having fun and doing it because you love it, who gives a crap whether or not the crowd goes for you. Its true that I never got any cool remarks till I pulled out my glo sticks but who cares. Doesnt mean that the person spinning the more showy -objects- are out there specifically for show! So guess what I'm getting down to is dont be dissing the spinner that expresses with lights, its not their fault that people are human and dont appreciate skill as much as showmanship.
Saucy, no worries girlie. I dont think that should be a motto because it splits the community too much. Spin what you want, as long as your having fun in doing what you love it doesnt matter what you spin. And for people who think it does matter..then in my opinion they have a long way to go before they -deserve- the recognition no matter the skill. Again, I dont care about skill but rather what spirit you spin in. Keep your fires lit Sauce
Disclaimer, this is not a diss to any one here. Only to the seperation of spinning objects.
Sock to fire...
Intriguingly I have just realised I've never seen fire poi live. Ever. I've seen a friend years back spin fire staff (Garbo from HOP) but never poi.
Personally I always wondered quite how much would translate between the two disciplines of sock and fire, but I don't see either as really lacking- fire is limiting but it is fire and that in itself is great yet socks allow the wonderfully technical craziness that afflicts the forums day after day- I love them both
(However I will second 'Fire for show, Socks for a pro' as the Spherculism motto- Its very tongue in cheek, and much in keeping with the feel of the site; oh and its genius :lol
Happy spinning, whatever it may be

I don't see much difference between people spinning fire or socks. That may sound odd, but I think I'd rather watch socks then fire. No disrespect to anyone who does fire, since that stuff is so cool and buring kero is a damn good smell. 8O
Sock to fire...
Oh, I hope I didn't give the impression that I'm biased against fire.
I certainly didn't mean to...
But in general it is easier to impress people with fire. Then again, the majority of human beings don't really know much about what you're doing. That whole layperson thing: it's easier to impress via flash than via skill. Doesn't make anyone worse or better, it's just a fact of human nature.
I've seen people do incredible things with and without fire, and I've seen people who love what they're doing with and without fire. Not so much the live, admittedly I've not yet seen/done fire spinning in person. Maybe I'll have a better idea of what I'm talking about when I do.
So have fun, whatever you're spinning. I suppose I'd pretty much second poikid if it came to an arguement, except possibly about the motto thing. I suppose that just depends on how seriously you take it.
Anyways, I'm done.

but spinning fire sounds soooo good...
Sock to fire...
Ok no offense to Matt and all those supporting it.
The reason I dont think the fire show sock pro thing should be a 'motto' is this. Though first thought is kinda funny and stuff,
1, Thats very rude to fire spinners
2, That gives off bad vibes if you were to come to a site and it says that if you were a fire spinner
3, It puts segregation between the two
4, It may very easily put socks above other objects thus making it the 'cool' thing to do, yet again dissing the others , or making people with less skill put in higher standard.
I have nothing against it as just a funny thing to say but as a COMMUNITY motto.... it just has way too many negative meanings imo.
Again nothing against saying it.... but I just dont think there should be any segregation between the two.
Not only that but is there really a pro in poi? We are all initiates.

Anyone who cant tell that was a joke needs to grow a sense of humour, get out more, or just be shot

I too was only joking about the motto- we'll have a Spherculism song at this rate

Yeah, it doesn't matter what you spin round here, just how you spin 'em
Things I have had a lot of fun spinning over the years (in no particular order);
UV Zuni Poi
4 little fire poi
The Big Boys ~ 5' of 4" wick on each fire poi (Burningman 2001)
Macrame Rope Poi (Burningman 2002)
EL wire UV tail poi (Burningman 2001)
Glowsticks with flashing LED's
My shoes, when all else fails and i just gotta spin.
Oh yeah, and my Orange Arms ~ 8' long UV orange tube that goes from the end of 1 poi up to your shoulder, across to the other shoulder (like a sweater) and down to the other poi head. With Orange LED's the full length
It's All Good

Oh ok then. I thought ya'll were serious about that.
As in me, right baphomet?
Just concerned for spherculism... honestly thought ya'll were serious about making it the motto... no worries then.

laff @ fire for show etc...
fire's a great way of performing poi for non-poiple but as soon as the more technical moves are brought in there's little difference visually from the more basic tricks (bf to ttn anyone with fire?) and so for my fire spinning i keep the tricks simpler and try to change the planes i'm spinning in as much as possible with a few little direction changes smattered about with a few long am extensions.
poi with tails i use pretty much the same as fire poi
socks are ideal for practising as they've less to tangle up than tails and not the risk of fire (even unlit they give bigger bruises!) and also since you'll be performing in better light conditions the hand movements for more complex moves are more visible and so isolations, anti-spin etc will be watchable and aweable for anyone who understands what your upto... the non-poiple might appreciate this, they'll definitely like the throws more but it's just a pair of socks to them. Poiple'll be lapping up the extra skills and this is surely the place to show most of your skills.
glowsticks i've found the hardest poi to master, being a lot lighter they're harder to keep accurate and can be spun ridiculously fast and used for all forms of spinning although i expect isolations could be dificult/impossible due to the lightness? A lot of hand movement is lost but uv gloves/paint could accentuate these or by having double ended glowies which also enables a far greater range of moves...as well as mindgames etc...
oh missed out the most impressive looking poi which everyone i've shown the video of then asks me to teach them (i never will tho) - blackbush poi. By far the most visually impressive but also the least difficult (but most daring) poi to spin.
I don't want to knock fire spinners as they're often the poiple who've been spinning longest and who are almost always the best performances with lots of movement aside from the poi
If I had to do a ranking it'd go (from easiest to hardest and keeping safety in mind - it's possible to do all moves with blackbush but i personally wouldn't try a buzzsaw weave or corkscrews, wraps...maybe a foot wrap if wearing some dr martens, mindgames with some asbestos gloves etc!
)
blackbush (all basic moves)
fire (missing some wraps, mindgames)
tails (missing some wraps, mindgames)
socks (any type of spinning)
glowsticks (any type of spinning)
have missed out flags and some others but imagine flags are harder to spin but easier cuz of the restriction of moves and would go in above fire once your used to them?
EDIT: Just got a pm from saucy sayin you can't even do above a 2bt weave with flags without them tangling...sounds pretty easy to me
Also I'd say in terms of audience appreciation it's nearly the reverse order although glowsticks might go at the top cuz of the state of some people watchin in clubs
Sock to fire...
Considering I use these most of the time...
Isolations are indeed rediculously hard with glow, but I think they are possible. I'm still working on it. I can spin some isolated circles but I'm not yet able to actually isolate any moves well. Almost pulled off an isolated buzzsaw once or twice, though.

OK - so we're all still friends, then?
So, when do I get to come visit each of you who hasn't seen fire up close and personal yet? You are each invited to my house for a spin jam whenever you're in NYC.

also as a last extra it's whichever you enjoy spinning which matters, for me any of them's fun in it's own way
