Burning Man?

Won't be there. Transportation, money, etc.

Ah well, I'll be able to go to these things eventually.

I'll be at BurningMan... This is my 5th year. The 0 or so (price depends on when you buy the tickets) you spend on the ticket is just a fraction of the cost, though. There's transportation to and from the event, camping supplies, food, water, costumes, and cost of any art projects, gifts, etc that you might bring.

Burning Man is not like any other festival. There is no vending except for coffee, lemonade, and ice. It's leave-no-trace, so whatever you bring in, be ready to take it and some trash home with you. It's in the desert, on a dry lakebed (aka Playa) so you have to be prepared for hot days, cold nights, alkaline dust storms, and rain. And you're expected to participate, so you'd better have costumes, art, and other "gifts" ready to share with the community!

If you're planning to be there, I'll be at the Winking Lotus camp, and spending a lot of time at Hookahdome as well.

Look for fire spinning at the Center Camp Cauldron this year every night, plus the Conclave fire show will be spectacular -- imagine 200 fire spinners doing the same routine! And as always, there will be fire spinning all over the playa... but we'll probably have fire shows each night at Hookahdome as well.

So who else is going?!?

Crimson always over-sells the number of people in the circle. For one thing, she counts all the spinners, safeties, flame throwers, and this year, drummers.

Alright, I did a bit of math. There were about 30 groups that spun at the man last year, according to Crimson's list. I'd say a couple of groups were large, but most were rather small... so let's say it averages out to 10 to 15 spinners per group. That's only 300 to 450 spinners -- nowhere near the 800 to 1000 that Crimson claims were there.

Lots going on in terms of Burning Man... but already being discussed on HOP and Tribe. I'm trying to make a list of fire performances scheduled for the playa so that I can plan ahead. Look on the Fire tribe or on the HOP Burning Man thread for updates.

I've compiled a list of Fire Spinning shows and jams scheduled at Burning Man this year. I know there are a million things happening on the playa, and it seems silly to make a schedule, but this will give you a concise list if you're looking for fire shows. Please contact me if you have any additions/changes to this list. I will send out an updated version in a few days that incorporates any additional information. I'll also post a copy of this at the Fire Conclave Convergence.

I'm also encouraging everyone to come spin at Kidsville for the kids on Tuesday, and Hookahdome on Wednesday night where I'll be hosting a jam. And come by the Winking Lotus camp and say hello! Look for the big orange dome with a tower at 5: 45 and Esplanade.
