post poi loss of finger cordination?
I've noticed that after spinning, my fingers feel like I'm wearing mittens, and they feel really slow. I type really poorly after spinning for a bit. It's like I lose all control over my fingers after spinning for bit, it usually doesn't last very long, but it's annyoing.
Does anyone else have this problem or know what could be wrong?

Its probably a weight difference thing- spinning poi have your finger muscles loaded with tension, but as soon after you stop the muscles take a little while to realise and therefore its all a bit 'easy'- same as if you've ever worn those ankle or wrist weights- use those for an hour or so and then take them off- its as if you're walking on air

Hey achluo
I had this alot during the first 4 months of my spinning. Never really knew what the problem was, but I think it's prolly as Chutney says. Especially seeing as I spun with very heavy poi

Achluo: How do you hold your poi.
They should hold onto you, and your fingers should be totally relaxed. Sounds like you might be tensing up, maybe, maybe not.
¦m¦

Well I hold my poi in like 10 different ways. Usually between my thumb and index or index and middle. Poikid could probably better discribe my style of holding the poi, since I don't pay much attention to how I'm hold it.

Ewww, I agree with Matt - you shouldn't really be holding your poi - they should be held on to you...
If you use double loops, you should be able to open your hands and they won't come off.
If you use single loop, do the all 3 fingers through, then drop the middle finger out.
If you use socks, tie a knot in them, and place this knot at the base of the "V" of your fingers.
I've played with some people's poi which are really heavy with no handles and my god! - My fingers afterwards REALLY hurt, and I have pretty strong fingers from all my drumming...
I've seen some people with heavy poi using actual wrist harnesses, so you don't use your hands at all - was very wierd to use, but VERY nice

I'll see about the knot, but I hate fingerloops.

My sock poi have a reasonably chunky knot at the end, but I grip them between thumb and index finger. Makes it a hell of a lot easier to pull off smooth opposite direction split-time moves IMO.

My poi hold on to my fingers but they are not relaxed. I wear my poi towards the end of my index and middle fingers with a folded over single-loop (sort of a slipnot type hold?). The faster i spin the harder it holds onto my fingers. With this grip i can use my fingers as well as my wrists to control my planes etc. After a long spin my fingers feel tired (although not as tired as the past.. they are getting stronger).
Sometimes.. especially during cold weather they feel tingly after a good spin. I think this is because they are moving around a lot exposed to the cold and my loops resrict bloodflow at high speeds. I've learned to take short breaks to adjust my grip and shake out my fingers when they begin to feel like they need the circulation

My sock poi have those small rubber bouncy balls tied into the ends. This just sits between the V of my finger nicely and makes a useful counter wieght for throws.
though I'm finding though when I extend my arms fully and do flowers, buzzsaws and other such things i sometimes need to hold the poi.

okay. I don't like having my poi hold onto me, I'd much prefer holding them.
I my fingers my just get tired, like my arms are really sluggish after I come back from jogging.

Hm
I use knots not loops so that I can toss n stuff. I always have them rest in the v between me middle finger and my index so I dont even use my fingers much anymore. Dont really know what to tell ya achluo
Sorry man..
Perhaps just start trying to spin with dif hand holds. I tell ya I couldnt get used to knots in the beginning but now I hate loops so..

I use stainless steel metal rings which I can fit 2 or 3 fingers into, I usually put my index and middle finger into them, sometimes my ring finger gets in there aswell. Sometimes I hold the ring in my palm and let the sock or chain come out between any two fingers or thumb. I try to hold it as many was as possible. For me this is a good idea because no matter what grip i end up with after a catch it's still familar and doesn't inhibit my spinning.
When im really working on things im not familar with like BTB butterfly waist wraps and like im trying to learn now I tend to squeeze extra tight as if it will give me more control over the planes (I don't think it does but I can't break the habbit) and I get screwed up dexterity for a few moments like you describe.
