electromagnet question

I have a question about making an electromagnet.. I remember doing some experiments with it in school.. but I can't say I remember much about it.. I have something I wanna try but I'm not sure how feasible it is..

So what's the question man?

well I'm trying to understand more on how to make one.. and how strong I could make it while keeping the overall size rather compact...

we did it in school with the battery wires, a board and some nails.. and what I need doesnt have to be much more complicated then that.. jsut trying to maximize energy here on the magnet while working in a limited space..

to maximise force/energy
you need a high number of turns (copper wire reels)
Then you can drive it with DC batteries + 1 switch
It's the current which energizes the coil that define the force/velocity of the core

But well ..
what R U guys trying to do ??
cause an electromagnet is like a short-stroke linear motor or magnetic latch !
one can propel a mass with it ... (not spin it)

I initially though you wanted to do regenerative spinning energy convertion ..
and this would be more with a generator (e.g. bycycle) ..and some boring power electronics:
Dc batteries would provide base energy for the LEDs + the generator to boost up current w/ spin energy
anyway ..

Explain further more your intents Rev !

well the idea is to run the coils of wire in the bottome of a handle piece... with a swtch on the handle.. a little bit of power to them will give you a little resistance.. see my hand can keep them together.. the magnet needs to help keep them straight.. and with an off mode for when I want to spin poi..

I'm not talking a lot of force... that will be accomplshed by the hand holding it you know.. I was jsut wondering how feasibleof a concept it would be..

and then I guess my next question is could I use it also to power leds with a second switch.. and thus be able to change programmed settings..

you can naturally see where all this is going.. but it all honesty all
I want is the handle to handle.. because I like using my poi like meteor at times and just wnat something that will help clean it up a little grip wise..
