My first order

OK - so here's the deal. You all know me as someone who likes to play with fire. I heart spinning poi - it will always be my one true love. But I also love making things and doing projects and building sh!t. So, naturally, I'm obsessive-compulsive about my fire gear. Some of my friends have begun to notice my poi, and how I seem to have a new pair (or am giving a pair to one or another of my friends) almost every week. Mostly they're gifts - or I ask people to pay for materials and I'll do the construction for free. Then I saw how much people paid for them on line .... which is like 4-5 times what the materials cost me. And since I actually like doing it, the labor cost (to me) isn't very high (plus it keeps my hands busy so I don't smoke cigarettes, which I'm quitting - save the lecture). Turns out a friend of mine was gonna buy some for her boyfriend for his birthday, but couldn't afford the the website she saw was charging. So I'm gonna make them. I guess I'm officially in business now ....... wish me luck. And I hope you don't all take this as crass commercialism of your website - if you do, let me know, and I'll take it down .... I was really just more interested in sharing my excitement about being able to combine a passion of mine with a business venture - that's been my life's dream. So Matt (or any other mod) let me know if this post is bad, and I'll take it down.

Nice one, good luck with that. I got my first fire poi off of HoP and they weren't all that great to be honest - horrible connectors that kept seizing up and stopping me spinning properly. I'm sure yours are much nicer and much better value for money than most commercial ones! Sphism/smilesmiley

ok... I bought my first fire poi from hop too.. and I don't use chains because I didn't like the non-slick spin.. now I know its ebcause of hop parts.. thx..

Hey man. I've been loking for some fire poi for awhile but I didn't want to order from HoP. So if your selling for less then they are, and you can solve my handle problem, then I'll probably buy some. So I'm intrested man.

Achulophobia: What's your "handle problem?"

Yay - I'd be honored to make your first set of fire poi - if you just cover the cost of materials and postage. And I'll make them totally customized to your exact specification.

Feel free to PM me ...

(all liability disclaimers apply here, I presume. We're friends, right?)

You should make a little website that shows people what you can make etc, if you make it competitive - which seems like you could probably do then you could be into something here.

You willing to post to the UK if ur given the right fee Sphism/gigglesmiley

funky!! hope ur new buisness works out Sphism/gigglesmiley

do u wanna tell us how u make fire poi *smiles sweetly* ive been thinkin bout it but ive got no idea how to go about it,my old pois r nearly dead Sphism/sadsmiley , oh a little question thats probably not meant to be in here but anyway how can u keep the wicks from unraveling and all that?

There's lots of websites that offer instructions on how to build your own ... and after that, it's just trial and error. For instance, if you do a lot of wraps, you want as little exposed metal on your wicks as possible - so you can modify the design to cover the bottom washer/nut. If you like to do throws, you can modify your handles. Etc. etc. Everybody has different ideas.

HoP's guides to building your own fire wicks:
http://www.homeofpoi.com/articles/fireheads.php

Here's another guy who has lessons on making wicks, who also sells them:
http://www.crossroads.net/a/firemaking/

And I'm sure there are more - but these are the two that I found most useful.

Remeber, I'm not trying to get rich here. I'm 100% in favor of people building their own if they've got the time and the interest. It's just turned out that some of my friends really don't have the interest in doing it themselves, and if I buy stuff like ball chain and kevlar in bulk, I can get a discount which makes my own poi cheaper for me, as well.

If I missed anybody's questions feel free to write me again.

I'll be coming to you for my first set sauce Sphism/gigglesmiley I truly hope this goes well for you!!
