1000 Spherculists celebrations?

Yes yes, I know its a little way off, but its going to happen soon (within the next few months at the most I reckon) and I thought it'd be pretty cool to maybe organise some Spherculism meets all over the world- anyone up for this? With a bit of planning we could probably get a decent meet in the UK, US and NZ and wherever else (or am I just being rediculously naive?). If anyone was up for travelling I'm sure others could arrange sofas or floors to crash on etc- if we start thinking now it might just come off Sphism/gigglesmiley

Well just thought I'd light the fire

Hey chut

That is going to be awesome

Sadly I will be absent from all of these if they are to take place.. recently spoke to my sister about it and she agrees. My parents are way against my going to any of these Sphism/sadsmiley There is always a chance ofcourse. Wish me luck.. going to talk to them sometime soon about it. That and theres a few gatherings here I've heard... we'll see...

-Poikid-

Excellent idea mr chutney, and I think you have just volanteered yourself as the official organiser Sphism/winksmiley

The event shall be called:

A Sphercular Ball

¦m¦

A SPhercular Ball...wicked title!! I'm well up for attending the yookay meet-up Sphism/gigglesmiley

Quote:

Me and my big mouth Sphism/gigglesmiley- Yep, I'll do my best, though I'm thinking it may be better to go for a few organisers- one for each of the likely meets across the world?

I'm off to the US on some big singing thing on Fri but will be back and ready to tackle this sometime after the 19th of July Sphism/smilesmiley

I don't know if anyone else has seen those Member map things that some forums offer? Basically its just a big map of the world and members 'pin' themselves on it- for things like meets it'd be cool to be able to see at a glance where people are, where good places would be to accommodate the most poips etc- Had a brief look but couldn't see any PHP Nuke modules but I'm sure there must be one out there? otherwise there are off-site things we could use, for example HERE

Any thoughts anyone?

Chut (Roll on the Sphercular Ball Sphism/gigglesmiley)

Cool map thingy. Sphism/gigglesmiley

Um, want to have one room of the ball happen in NYC?

Quote:
room of the ball

I like that a lot Sphism/gigglesmiley

I think every party should be at the same time so we are all spinning at once. ie morning in US, noon in UK, evening in Oz. Or at least overlap them. Like Earth dance festivals do.

Perhaps we could sort out some live webcam action, just thought i'd put that one out there.

¦m¦

I was thinking exactly the same thing about simultaneous spinning world wide- thats got to be on the criteria list as an ideal- I'm all for it should it be viable for enough poips

Webcams- Fantastic idea, not sure of practicalities- the main prob would be having venues that we could get machines to and be plumbed in for broadband (theres really no point otherwise- waaaaay to slow)- Can anyone think of good venues that may offer the opportunity of a rudely quick ADSL or cable pipe?

I love both ideas- hope we can come to some resolution of the possible hurdles,

Chut

Locations with broadband is a bummer cos it would be nice to be in a field.

Perhaps it would be better to get good quality video footage of each event, like 5 minutes of each person there. Then we could edit it all together, cut up between all the locations. That way we could see that we were all spinning together, we could see what we all look like and we could all learn from each other.

Then we could stick it on the server for downloads.

How about that?

Sphism/gigglesmiley We really are thinking along the same lines here Sphism/gigglesmiley An edited vid of all the Spherculists eh?

Do you think the HOP community would mind us calling it 'Sphercles of Light Sphism/winksmiley'

Chut

Probably.

I'm sure we can come up with a better name than that.

Chut

how bout "It's a Sphercular World"?

That'd be cool seeing as the world is a ball and such. There's loads of petential there

l8rs! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Anywho,

a buddy of mine suggested that each gathering be held in a location which is totally recognisable, so that you'd instantly know where the video clips were from. i.e famous landmark backdrops.

just a thought

¦m¦

how about: MultiRefractionalSpherculescence

Now thats a brilliant idea- Would we need to get special permits to perform near landmarks? I'm guessing nations get a bit tetchy about people getting close to national treasures with fire Sphism/smilesmiley Wicked idea Sphism/smilesmiley

I havn't been on line recently but I must say this is a great idea. I would love to be a part of this. Sphism/gigglesmiley

Well the great thing is Rovo ~ You are a part of it Sphism/smilesmiley

¦m¦

Brilliant idea,
the video compilation seems more realistic than the broadband simultaneous one
Then probably we should all meet in the same place in our respective continent ..
shall we define/vote locations for EU/US/OZ/...
I would propose a workshop at the EJC for that Sphism/winksmiley

I'll be at EJC

see you there

¦m¦

just a quick thought that springs to mind, maybe the people at guinness might be interested in simultaneous spinning? Who else wants to be a record breaker? Might mean free videoing....

just a thought! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Have returned from my hols to find the Sphercular Ball discussions have gone completely off the boil- we're just under 100 members off that special 1000 member mark and yet its all gone quiet- hopefully this will kickstart the conversation-

Things we need to address:

When?: when is good for us all? Is simultaneous spinning across the world plausible?

Venues: which countries? Where in aforementioned countries? Are we considering spinning near landmarks?

Tie in activities: pollenski has suggested a world record attempt for the largest simultaneous spin- is this viable? Can we make it happen?

Recording the event: Suggestions range from live webcasting to videoing each member then centrally editing it together for one big sphercular vid- can you think of anything better?

These are just the tip of the iceberg- What do you want it to be?- throw in your 2 cents please!

Also is anyone interested in setting up that member map locator thing that I suggested at the beginning of the thread? I thought it'd be pretty groovy..

Anyway, just hoping to get the ball rolling again (excuse the pun) - Please show you're interest by voting on the poll HERE
Lets make this happen

Chut (considering releasing an OTT poster stating 'You're community needs YOU!' with a pick of him pointing... now where's my bushy moustache? Sphism/winksmiley)

When is a tough question for me, since the upcoming month is likely to be rather hectic. Gone for a week, getting ready for/moving into college...fun stuff.

I'd need a location on the east coast of the US. Doubt I'd be able to go far from my house, which would mean a trek for everyone else and probably wouldn't work. If the when is after I've settled in at college, then things might work better.

Simultaneous spinning requires a lot of advanced planning. It's possible, but I think it'd take too much time to put together in this case. Makes things more complicated.

Would the best way of figuring out locations be to have threads where all the people from an area can figure out where they want to meet?

*bump*

Please get involved- what do you want from this?

Chut

wow...wot a sphercultastic idea guys!!!!. (sorry since i've been away for a bit i've only just stumbled across the thread)..

I would of course love to be involved in such a wikkid event...however given that i think i'm the only kiwi spherculoid out there..might not be quite as exciting to watch me spinniing on my own.. Sphism/sadsmiley hehe

buy hey i'm sure could at least be at the ball in spirit

Sphism/gigglesmiley

That would be something I'd love to go to. I should be able to get to anything in London, with enough time Sphism/smilesmiley

Lynne

Well, we got 1000- anyone fancy celebrating Sphism/winksmiley

Chut

Hey ... anyone else ever heard of this:

http://poi.meetup.com/

Woah!
Wierd site Sphism/confusedsmiley

Could be useful though Sphism/smilesmiley
Good find :7

Meetup really only works if there are enough people in your area for a particular meetup to make it worthwhile. That means most of the ones on there (including poi) are pathetic. By pathetic, I mean that signing up to be part of a group that can only round up 3 complete strangers to plan to meet in the back of a Round Table Pizza sounds lame. In contrast, joining a larger group of people, many of whom already know each other, to spin fire in a park somewhere seems like a fun activity. I know every meeting has to start somewhere, but there are already plenty of mechanisms for organizing gatherings (ie Spherculism!) without having to resort to meetup.com.

While I'm in cranky mode... why the heck is it that flash mobs got so much attention last year? I mean people have been organizing random gatherings via the internet for ages, but suddenly, because some new york hipster does it, it becomes a cultural phenomenon?!? Lame.

wooooOOOOOoooo
Mr Orbit fell out the wrong side of bed this morning Sphism/gigglesmiley (yeah I know it's not morning over there  )

But I have to agree with both points-
Those flash mobs would have been far more interestion if they had all turned up in long raincoats and suddenly 50 people had flashed evryone and then run away!
:3

And:

There do only seem to be about 250 poiple world wide on that meetup thing so the likelyhood of anything happening in the near future in my area is pretty small.
And I'm not sure what it has to offer over forums like this or HOP.

Wow ... I just saw someone link to that, and was wondering if it was brand new or something and that's why there was no one on it. I would hardly call myself pathetic, but when I first took up poi, I didn't know anyone else in NY who did it. Yes, I have since met a good many of them, and have been organizing a gathering on a regular basis for a few months now -- but the point is I DIDN'T when I started.

I think newbies who are looking for their communities are smart to try the internet. I didn't even think of it - never even heard of HoP until I'd been doing it for a year. It's a shame that you would've called me pathetic, simply for not knowing other fire spinners. I don't think it's even remotely "pathetic" to want to meet people who are interested in the same things you are.

And on the second point - I know the people who are organizing the flash mob here in NY every Tuesday evening from 6-30 to 7:00 hundreds of young artsy types go to the center of the terminal where wall streeters get on the train to go home to the suburbs and recite the first amendment into their cell phones in unison. Very cool --- not even remotely "ny hipster" --- a political message. So there. Sphism/tonguesmiley

Sorry  Last post was supposed to be amusing, not touchy (can't speak for mr cranky though Sphism/winksmiley )

As I said: "Good find"! Sphism/smilesmiley

But I still think it would be better if the flash-mobs actually flashed Sphism/winksmiley

No worries, StoneT ... I just think it's important not to make people feel bad about themselves ... and I know for certain that there are a number of people on this site who don't know others in their local areas to meet up with .... and I didn't want those individuals to be hurt by these comments. And, frankly, if I had found that site a year and a half ago, I may very well have signed up.

OK ... I'm getting off my soapbox now.

Yup! Me for one!
I know no-one else round here.
But I wasn't offended by Orbit Sphism/smilesmiley

I am pathetic! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Where are you Mr Orbit?
Look at what you've started!
You've got a lot to answer for my lad! Sphism/winksmiley

I knew I shoulda edited more before posting... I'm sorry if I offended you, Saucy. Come by the Winking Lotus camp at Burning Man and kick my ass/arse.

I didn't mean that the people are pathetic. I'm signed up for the meetup, for one thing, so that can't possibly be true! ;-) But a meetup without critical mass, and one without any real context, will most likely fizzle. Meetup.com got a lot of attention because a bunch of Howard Dean supporters used it to organize gatherings -- and those meetups got to be huge meetings (I went to one!). With soo many different interests out there, the vast majority of the meetups are likely to be very small. And the smaller meetups, as far as I can tell, don't seem to get anywhere, because they don't reach a critical mass. And because they're not organized by any one person, there's usually nothing driving it - no promotion, no organization, no assurance that anyone's even going to show up. Another interesting comparison might be meetup vs tribe.net vs friendster, but I'll spare you that one...

My complaint about the flash mobs isn't even about the mobs themselves... In San Francisco, there have been tons of these types of events going on for years, but somehow because NY Hipsters are doing it now, it got a lot more attention. I'm sure you've seen the mobs at BurningMan -- nuns, santas, french maids, bunnies, ninjas, bears, etc. etc. continuing what the Cacophony society and others in San Francisco have been doing for a while now. Is it a political/artistic message to have 200 drunken santas rampaging through the streets? 30 PeeWee Hermans?!? a dozen teams of people in doggie outfits pulling shopping carts from one bar to the next? Maybe... or maybe it's just a bunch of people out to have a good time and mess with peoples' expectations. I think my complaint here is really about east coast bias in media. But then maybe some of the people here who do these types of things would be upset if more people found out about them...

Anyhow, I'm wandering off topic here... the point is, I don't think you're pathetic, Saucy. I generally don't think people are pathetic, just the situations that people get into sometimes. And unless Meetup somehow gets more people interested in their gatherings, their poi meetup for San Francisco is lame. We have a lot of poi spinners here -- meetup is not the right site to find them.

Thanks Orbit! Sphism/gigglesmiley

I was pretty sure that's what you meant. But I didn't want to just let it hang there in the air. I, personally, had NEVER heard of this "meetup" website before. And I admired the idea ... using the web to meet real live people ... it seemed new to me.

And there are silly flash mobs, too, I recognize. Last summer it was just going to a random place all at once and dispersing 10 minutes later for no reason whatsoever ... and at the time I remember the press covering it, and saying the phonomenon had come from Europe, actually. But the guys that are using it to spread the message that our rights are being eroded by our current governing system are ingenious, I think.

AND I agree with you. I don't think there's any political expression to the Santa Con phenomenon (100's of people dressed as Santas barhopping.) That IS just a whole lot of fun. But I never associated that activity with the flash mob thing. Strange how these pop culture terms develop different definitions.

Anyway, I will NOT be coming to beat you up. If anything, I'll stop by to apologize for getting so stupidly defensive about the post.

Group hug?

Ooh... it's best not to even go down the road of eroded rights in this country. If George Bush wins again I might be thinking about moving. Maybe if the Brits get their act together and kick Tony Blair out of office, that will convince some of our voters that things are amiss... but that's wishful thinking.

I am looking forward to meeting you on the playa though... I'll be sure to save a set of Barbie poi for ya!

and no apologies neccessary, Sauce... I mean I'm the biggest reactionary on the whole site!

Awww.
Isn't making up nice Sphism/gigglesmiley

But for the last 8/9 posts!
Sphism/winksmiley

So this celebration!
To be honest unless something is happening in the SW UK I'll probably not be able to make it anyway due to work/family considerations Sphism/sadsmiley

Are people leaning towards centralised national things (would be very impressive!) or lots of little things?

Well if anyone's going to the HOP gathering at BurningMan, we can have an impromptu celebration there for Spherc.

I agree Orbit, but wouldn't it be nice to actually have something that is predominantly Spherculism orientated? Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we go completely exclusive (not what I was intending, nor viable as there are so many multiple community members) simply that it would be nice to meet as the Spherculism poips first and foremost. If loads of other poips come along, fantastic Sphism/gigglesmiley

TBH I'm completely new to how these spin meets work- the Falmouth thing, for example, seemed to be just one big spin meet, posted everywhere by established community members fomr HOP, but as far as I can tell it wasn't "A HOP Meet"

StoneT

Quote:

Thats the kind of thing I set up this thread for, so far without a massive response- If I can get this member map thing up and maybe stasrt flkoating some dates about we could get a better idea of whether larger centralised meets wil work or smaller more local affairs- personally, logistics obviously permitting, I'd like to go as big as possible Sphism/gigglesmiley This will obviously change from country to country as the US and NZ are just so darned big!

Your thoughts anyone?

Chut

The only problem is that I already have too many things scheduled for Burning Man, which is a bad idea. I don't want to spend all of Burning Man spinning poi!

Well I'm definately up for it and I think it will be great publicity for the site. I think half the problem is no-one knows it's being considered.
Chut- if you manage to set up that member map we can start posting it around other forums and directing people to that. hopefully anyone who goes to see it will register and we'll see the interest.
As I say I would have to lean towards to lots of smaller meets option as I probably wouldn't be able to travel any further than say Bristol.
In fact- Anyone up for a massive meet in Bristol? Sphism/gigglesmiley It's a good place! Great music scene!
That would be my Ideal solution.

Is there any way you could put an option on that map thin to say how far you would be willing to travel? Then you could see where most people's travel radius circles overlap.(doe that make sense?)

But as I say I think this needs exposure and alot of pushing to get anywhere.

I'm off to the Where it's at forum. Sphism/winksmiley

StoneT- re your map/ distance query;

The map I've seen allows you to place a little chap/chapette on the map and add a simple comment- We could always put a basic criteria for what poips put in their comment I suppose (Name, location, distance willing to travel etc).

I think the more advanced member maps cater for all this anyway, but the one we might be getting doesn't have this yet as its still in development- it'll do for now though Sphism/gigglesmiley
