New toys :D

Hoorah! My Firetoys fire poi heads have just arrived, along with 10 glowsticks- Plan to burn this evening, and a mate of mine is bringing over his dv camera- there was also talk of a UV light which will do nicely for my white and black socks Sphism/smilesmiley

Yay, now have fire! W0000t!

Does everyone have white and black socks though? I have them, poikid has them, Bluecat has them and so does blackass.
Hope to see another video soon. Sphism/gigglesmiley

I have a new set of poi and the socks are black and white cos they leave nice striped pattrens under uv light (blacklight for all the american branded folks)

¦m¦

I have Burberry sock poi at the moment Sphism/gigglesmiley

Very cool Chut! Have a blast man

As for the black and white socks... it is rather odd that alot of us have them. Cool tho. I love garthy's Sphism/gigglesmileySphism/gigglesmiley

Spiral- Burberry?? Sphism/gigglesmiley

Re Black and White Stripeys- Well I also have red and black checked and a pair of lilac and orange, but my w/b are my fave for normal practicing and throws- r/b are too heavy (big juggling balls instead of mini ones- soon to be rectified) and the l/orange are really, really slow- they are my tai chi poi Sphism/smilesmiley

I did get to burn a couple of time last night, but there was a bit of a faux pas on my fuel selection- No I didn't use petrol or anything crazy like that, but I did inadvertantly use lamp oil laced with that lemon anti bug stuff- result? Smoky burning and a fresh lemony after smell- Anyone think it'll mess up my wicks? (I'm switching to clear normal stuff tonight).

Silly Chutney

Rainbow Stripes. (See my picture in gallery)

And they Rock Sphism/gigglesmiley

spiralx: I've been trying to get some Burberry socks for some sock poi. The concept is so wrong it makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Imagine standing there at the glade listening to Psy-Trance with your Burberry sock poi! Sphism/gigglesmiley

The Burberry poi were for a chav-themed birthday party we had at our house Sphism/gigglesmiley As you say the concept is so wrong that I knew I had to keep them! Sphism/gigglesmiley

So if you see a ginger guy with Burberry poi at the Glade Festival, it's almost certainly me! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Chut -- I use the Citronella (anti-bug) fuel all the time. It's cheaper than lamp oil, and (in my experience) actually LESS smoky than the clear lamp oil. And I can't imagine that there's any difference in the wear on your poi. Only thing I suggest is to always dip them immediately after a burn, to stop the smoldering right away -- the smoke coming off after your fuel runs out is actually the fabric burning. Dip immediately, and you'll get less smoke over all and a longer wick life.

-Sauce

Saucy- thanks for the info- I'm still very new to all this burning malarkey- The citronella stuff has been pretty smoky from what time i've had with it (3 full burns) Tends to be smoky at the start, then cleaner mid spin, then dirty as hell at the end- I have dipped striaght after on all three occasions- do wicks take a little time to 'burn-in?'

I'll update with notable differences to clear oil ASA I can get out again- bloody wet AND windy as hell here- Grrrr

Chut

I have black and white socks, however mine are in pink fishnet tights...

sexy

Pink fish nets eh Baphomet? Sphism/gigglesmiley Sounds like something out of Rocky Horror Sphism/winksmiley

Got to burn the clear lamp fuel earlier (for research purposes of course Sphism/gigglesmiley) and found that it was cleaner and brighter (and not smelly Sphism/smilesmiley)

Had a bit of a shock when I dipped them though- despite them being out as I dipped them the lamp fuel went up- the heads reignited but luckily the reservoir of fuel didn't. I then gently spun the one flaming head till it was good to go out again, spun it out, waited for about a minute to make sure there were no embers on the poi or anything, then dipped again- short delay, then reignition again... Suffice to say the last time I let the head smoulder for a good 90 seconds before dipping- I'm guessing the heads must have been hot enough to get the fuel up to its flash point just briefly, but I may be wrong...

Any experienced pyros out there see where I went wrong?

Chut

I never use anything but parafin.

Parafin is about as safe as it gets, you wouldn't have that reignition trouble with it. You just can't really do that with lamp oil.

My advice, buy parafin

You can mix the 2 ~ although i've never tried that either.

¦m¦

I think I might just do that- I'm only using the small amount of lamp fuel that I found in the family shed (I'm back in the dear old Herefordshire countryside prior to my Holiday at the mo) so when I get back I'll switch - thanks matt Sphism/smilesmiley

Chut

First: I have B/W stripeys too!

Fuels: Don't get US fuels and UK fuels mixed up! We don't have anything labeled "parafin" here in the US.

Most spinners I know in California use some combination of White Gas (aka Coleman fuel, which is very expensive in the UK but relatively inexpensive here) and clear lamp oil (relatively expensive, but burns longer and safer than white gas). I'm not a big fan of Citronella, which is intended for use in tiki torches. That stuff is nasty and sticky and leaves black streaks all over my clothes. Likewise, I find kerosine, biodiesel, and other fuels to be nastier and stinkier than white gas and clear lamp oil.

The main issue I have with clear lamp oil is that they emit white smoke after the poi go out. That, in my mind, is better than the nasty black smoke and soot that comes with Citronella and some other fuels.

ah whadda you guys use for that old fake fire? Sphism/gigglesmiley

Yey, so many poiple with black and white socks. I have them too. Don't they just look ace under uv...

I no longer have b/w socks

My sis bought me a pair of red and black ones just as a random gift Sphism/gigglesmiley My b/w ones were being held together by rubber bands anyway. So that's one off the list of b/w stripeys. I just gotta figure out a cool name for my new ones now..hm...

Haha poikid, b/w socks are sooo last week Sphism/winksmiley

I've made a great new set for the glade festival and they are fully technicolour.

¦m¦

Ack how can I keep up with all these new trends! Sphism/gigglesmiley
