What do you think of Michal Kahn's poi book
I like it. I really like the illustrations, and she breaks down the moves nicely. It's nice to get some of the information about some of the peripheral aspects of poi - ie what Maori poi spinning is like, what different poi designs look like, etc. It's definitely geared towards the beginner, and if you can learn by mimicking videos on the web, you might not need this book... but I think most people would benefit from at least a few tips here and there that she's got.
She names a lot of her moves based on the old club swinging names, which doesn't always match up with the HOP-derrived approach that's common online. I couldn't figure out for the longest time why she covered Reels as much as she did until someone pointed out to me that many of my moves break down into different patterns of reels.

orange with a blue stripe across the middle...
I only got it as a present after having found spherculism and hop and so didn't learn a single move from there, but still found that reading it through was a help to my spinning...
very good for beginnners, but some of the tips on developing style are helpful for at least up to my level...what that is I have no idea, but definitely not advanced!

I haven't ever seen it, but I haven't heard anything good about books on poi.
Although I'd like to know a bit about Maori poi.

It's very good indeed, the drawings are excellent and she breaks down moves very well... no easy thing to do for something like poi! There's a very good solid base of moves and transitions and stuff so that anyone learning this will know all of the basics and how to move between them and so on, which is often something that people don't pick up at the beginning.
There are a reasonable amount of more advanced moves in there as well, I still can't do a couple of the bits in there like full waist wraps.

Hi hawkeye, do you use amazon or even have it there (still don't understand thisinternet shopping thing) because that's where I got it from. You could try it. Maybe the english one will ship it to you????? I just got the book and I think it's really good for a beginner like myself, But I agree there's no real progression or detail on advanced moves. Shame. Maybe she'll bring out a more advanced book. (crossed fingers and hoping). x

Hawkeye,
Her distributor in North America is Dube Juggling (www.dube.com), so you're more likely to get it through juggling shops or juggling web sites (I know renegade juggling sells it).

i Think im with pollenski as well.
once youve seen all the tutorials on hop you know most of the book already, and the tutorials on here are way more advanced.
it is good and nicely laid out and i did only get the bhtb waist wrap last night so even after a year ish its still teaching me

Thing is though I find the tutorials on hop a bit too small I can't see the hand movements very well. Although, they are good for getting a basic idea. the tutorials are really better on here (kissing arse xxx).

i learn't the full waist wrap from that book + am still struggling with throught the legs ones god damnit! it came a bit late for me in terms of learnin basic moves (as did hop) but it was good for filling in a lot of gaps + getting me thinking about my planes + different areas of my body to spin in...

What do you think of Michal Kahn's poi book
I really like the book. I do a lot of my spinning at juggling club - no puter access there!
The book helps me to break stuff down, especially the early things i learnt.
She teaches courses too; a friend is about to try and get on one, so i wonder how it will compare

Excellent. It's a much better way of doing it; instead of standing in front of a mirror for an hour, going on line, back to the mirror, etc, I can have it open at my feet and sort the move out there and then. Marvellous!
What do you think of Michal Kahn's poi book
I think that the book is brilliant.
I am a real beginer to poi and at first I found some videos on HOP and they were great, but it is some times hard for me to see what is happening as the move happens so fast.
Also I cannot always be on the net.
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate all the tutorials and videos here and on HOP and other places. And I would like to thank all the wonderful people that made them and put them up to share their knowledge.
But I have learned so much from that book, it sets it out so well it's like having a move set out for you in slow motion, right from the very begining, and as faerie without wings said, you can have it open right there at your feet.
I only have one complaint.
When I can't get a move, and when I am struggling, I have the impression that the poi girl is laughing at me.
And she's thinner than I am.
