Sphism/gigglesmiley

My name's Matt Terry. You may know me better as 'PoiPoiPoi'. I was born on the 19th February 1979, that makes me 25 and a very proud Aquarian.

I have been spinning poi for about 3 years now. I first saw poi at Burningman 2000. I felt like I already knew how to do it and taught myself poi at a pretty fast rate. I started during my final year as an Industrial Design student at Brunel University (Runnymede Campus). My course was super hard and the only way I could find to relax was through my poi.

size=18]Anywho, this is me:[/]

I now live and work in Brighton on the South east coast of England. I work as a graphic designer for a body jewellery company called Wildcat wildcat.co.uk

I really love my job. I have artistic freedom to do as I wish and I respect my boss for giving me such freedoms.

I love to travel. I lived in San Francisco for a year in 2000. That's when I first went to Burningman. Then I went back in 2001 and 2002. This year I decided not to go out on the playa, instead I went to Samothraki Festival in Greece ~ It was a blast, and I met loads of great spinners. I took 5 weeks off work and travelled back from Greece over land. I met up with my brother out there who has been driving a Mk 2 Landrover all the way from South Africa!! We had a great adventure together. We came up through Albania ~ which is a crazy place! Then through Monte Negro and Croatia. I even got to drive the Landy through Bosnia Sphism/gigglesmiley Listening to Jefferson Airplane. I then met up with my buddy Sam. We came back over the Dolomite mountains, through italy and up through France. Ah, such fond memories.

I have always felt that teaching poi is the only way to gain true Understanding of the subject. A couple years ago I started writing a book about poi, but felt that the really complex stuff couldn't really be expressed on paper. Then Spherculism came along. I was torn about how much stuff to give away for free and how much to sell on DVD's. You'll be glad to hear that I have decided to give everything I know about poi away for Free on this site. I figure there'll be some kind of Karmic reward for my efforts eventually. I do still plan on selling some DVD's though. But the focus will be more on 'What can be Done' with the moves you've learnt from the site and I hope to film lots of poiple whose style I admire.

Books: The Alchemist, The Kybalion, In Search of the Miraculous.

Films: Dark City, Gattaca, 2001: A Space Odyssey

Places: Black Rock City, Samothraki, Glastonbury, Joshua Tree, Plitvice National Park, London, Yosemite, San Francisco, Seattle.

Well, that's a little about me, but what about you lot. Tell us a little about yourselves.

Take it easy, happy twirling,

You made this wonderful site possiblt anmd no one wrote back to your introduction! Well hello matt site administrator guy with dreads. I was wondering how did you get your dreads natuarlly or did you let someone help you make them into form?

Hey Rovo,

My friend helped me separate the hair at the roots and then I made the dreds myself. Took a while but it means I know them all intimately. They are about a year old now, and i've hardly touched them since. Gotta separate my roots a bit but other than that they pretty much look after themselves.

m

Yeah i have a friend who went on tour with a band called moe. and when she came back she had some i'll-cared for dreads and ended up having to cut here hair short

Hi Matt.
On with the dread thing, I had dreads put in through backcombing just before Christmas. I love the way they look but there so much work. Well my hair is crap for dreading anyway.

Wow, you went to Brunel!! I'm at Royal Holloway, and have spun with Brunel peeps a couple of times. Happy coincidences are great Sphism/gigglesmiley

Ha, that's funny. I was the first fire spinner at brunel. The only one in my year. After I left the little buggers all started doing it and even set up a fire society. God that would have been great. Never mind. Send them to this site, I always wanted to teach them but I left, and haven't been back since.

Flip Egham the 'bird 'for me next time your passing Sphism/gigglesmiley

I swear i saw u on saturday night in sheffield after being rather intoxicated talking to the guy it turns out it wasn't you, anyway nice site some pretty good tutorials n stuff keep up the good work.

Ok. I shall also yell random abuse when I walk past the Monkey's Foreskin in your honour!

hey dude caught you doing some nice isolations with some yellow/green glowstick poi at Shpongle (Glasto 2003) - first time I'd seen poi done like that, I was fairly amazed8O. So yeah it's pretty mad that I've found your web-site after going on to mates about the crazy moves some guy with dreads was doing at Glasto, and now you've just opened up the whole world of those (quick release) throws into my poi-ing. Nice one mate you're an inspiration to us all. Sphism/gigglesmiley

Cheers, shpongle at glasto last year was one of my best spins ever.

I kinda 'grew up' spinning to that stuff so it's always a pleasure to see them live. I'd just learnt a few new crazy stalls and was putting them into good use, interacting with the crowd is my favourite. Seeing how close I could get my poi to peoples faces without hitting them - only when after they decide to enter the circle though.

That was an absolute blast and i'm so glad you got to see it, I wish i had a copy on camera.

The secret to it all was that I was stone cold sober acting like I was super f@*?ed. If i hadn't been sober i would never have been playing so close to the crowd. Although spinning to live shpongle is always gonna 'intoxicate' me.

Welcome aboard BoomShanka, I'm sure you can do All that stuff, just takes practice and Understanding. You should have seen me in Samothraki this year - now that was special cos i'd leant loads of hyperloops and throws and it was my first chance to freestyle it all, any of you lot see GMS on the last morning of Samothraki??

m

mmmm that wer lovely that were, spinning to shpongle. you were never sober tho Sphism/gigglesmiley 8O

did you meet loads of edinburghians at samothraki? they would al have been spinning dementedly

smiles

whoah... Shpongle live..... I really want to see that sometime, or Halucinogen. Really anything involving Simon Posford is great.
There's so much drug related stuff in electronic music, but then I think drug users are sterotyped to much.

Another Egham person? My word... I went to Royal Holloway and did physics the same as FaerieWithoutWings... although a couple of years before you were at Brunel.

Sphism/gigglesmiley

No way spiralx. I was at brunel 1997-2001.

Wouldn't quite say i'm an egham person though, more like a convict

¦m¦

I was there 95-98 overall... We even used to hold outdoor parties in the Holloway grounds every year... couple of little sound systems playing techno and old school. Security did not like it Sphism/smilesmiley

I've been to those parties t the same time there was a huge ball that cost like £80 to go to. What a freakin joke. Great party in the woods though.

Just got my first reply to my post on Message Of The Day about starting a poi/juggle society Sphism/smilesmileySphism/smilesmileySphism/smilesmiley I'm a happy bunny now!

It's really bad music wise now. Out of a three week comm card (twenty-one days), ten of the nights advertised were R'n'B, and most of the others were cheese. The best nights I've been to were Mardi Gras and 70's night... House/trance and old-skool respectively.

We used to have a couple of decent nights a term pretty much... the rest of the time a typical week would be 60s night, 70s night, 80s night, Caribbean night and then maybe a film.

But we did have a ton of clubs come down - Lakota, Megatripolis, Return to the Source (twice), Escape from Samsara, Heaven and nights organised by people from Holloway. Not bad at all considering Sphism/smilesmiley

Oh yeah, we had a foam party last term, and a beach party, but it was R'n'B again so I didn't bother.

Yo homie, NYC here... just wanted to post a public thanks for the...

WIBBLE WORKSHOP!!!

Hey Matt,

Just wanted to say HelloSphism/smilesmiley and to add that I'm really glad that this site is back online. Its absence was much lamented!

I'm not poiing much at the moment but I like to read about startling new discoveries in poi and wonderful nonsense chitchat.

Welcome back fro xmas holidays everyone,

I'm in melbourne, just been up to Woodford folk festival with Gabe, had a wicked time. We ended up driving there and back, think it was about 4500Km round trip, australia is a fookin big place.

Anyhoo, just thought i'd drop in here and tell you my exciting news. My brother has just bought a stunning house on the north coast of the south island, new zealand, and he's asked me and my lady to look after it for a while Sphism/smilesmiley

It's real big, 4 bedrooms, double garage, workshop space, lush garden, beautiful views and it's in my favourite part of nz.

So i will be moving there pretty soon, probably by march.

I'll have space to set up a permanent spinning / filming studio Sphism/gigglesmiley so youcan expect an influx of videos around that time.

I've been working on the poi tuition side of things, got a real nice basic structure worked out, just gotta fill in all the content, text, image and video. It's gonna rock.

Also we'll have a base to start setting up little businesses. The vague plan is that me and bex will be up at the new house, i'll set up a few businessy things, then james and sarah will move up in 6-12 months and hopefully we'll have some nice little earners set up.

I may have to bite the bullet and get a job, unlike my pseudo freelance work that i do now. Aparently nelson (the biggest city near by) is turning into quite a media hub, so if i can find somewhere really cool to work for good money i may do it.

James and Sarah have got their temporary residency sorted for nz, i may start the process myself later this year. That would mean that i can stay beyond my current visa. It takes about 3 years total to get (or not get) your residency. So who knows.

Bex (my lady) wants to go travelling in a year so we might both end up in europe for a while. But that's all in the next chapter.

So then, happy new year to you all, i think it's gonna be a sweet year Sphism/winksmiley
