Gah, too much being disappeared...

Geez, thought I was going to be around more often and then things got all busy again. There's no justice...

And I'm going away for a week later on today, so don't expect to see me for at least that long. Sphism/sadsmiley

bye bye, :57 have a good time with lovely people, and a good spirit.

stay in the light! :37

hope to see you soon

Back from my week away from the internet. I was at a martial arts camp my school has every year. 5 hours or so of training a day. Quite nice. I've pretty much completely moved from "student" to "teacher/chaparone" status, which has its ups and downs. Had an awesome time overall. And I spun some glow on strings for everyone, too. Sphism/gigglesmiley

Now I've got a week of packing up to go to college, but that shouldn't keep me from being around. So says optimism, anyway.

:57 Welcome back Sphism/gigglesmiley
What sort of martial arts?
I do Aikido myself but would like to try Kendo and Iaido (and loads of other stuff)
My Sensei always says "When you teach is when you really learn"...

Thanks. Sphism/smilesmiley

Actually they make that question a tad hard to answer. The school is Robert's Karate and the shirts say Tae Kwon Do on them, but I've been told our style is actually Mudokwan Tang Soo Do (don't hold me to the spelling, though). The forms are very similar to Shotokan Karate.

We also have some weapons classes. There was a while where we didn't because there was no one to teach them, but I'm pretty sure we've got them going again. Sadly I haven't had the time to take them. I know a little bit of bo, but that's it.

How's Aikido? I know a bit about it but not much in detail. It'd be nice to get a good description.

Sounds interesting Sphism/gigglesmiley
Hmm... Aikido?
Developed by our O'Sensei- Morihei Ueshiba (not sure of spelling) from combinations of various martial arts including jujitsu, kung fu, erm.. and others Sphism/confusedsmiley
I think the ethics behind it are to protect not only yourself but also your attacker from lasting harm. It's supposed to be the highest ethical martial art.
Practically- the movements are predominantly circular (It complements poi quite well Sphism/winksmiley ) and are divided into projections (throws) and immobilisations. The idea is you don't oppose attackers but accept and guide their force around your 'sphere of defense' thereby unbalancing them, at which point you can apply your own force to throw or immobilise them.
There's also alot of stuff about centering (mind and body) and ki which as I undestand it seems to be an almost supernatural force that can be generated by attaining a unified mind and body. Unfortunately some Aikidoka seem to think that ki is a a totally supernatural force, something like 'THE FORCE' in Starwars Sphism/gigglesmiley
:jedi
(Actually 'THE FORCE' and the Jedi were originally based on aikido but exagerated and fictionalised obviously, kind of ironic Sphism/winksmiley )
Hope that makes some sort of sense Sphism/confusedsmiley

Neat stuff. I know a little more now than I did before. Sphism/smilesmiley

I looked up Aikido in a Japanese-English dictionary and was told it means "Way of harmony with the universe". Although in Japanese it's actually spelled Aikidou (just means you hold the 'o' sound a little longer). The kanji actually looks more along the lines of "joint spirit way" or something like that when literally translated, which could go along with the idea of accepting and guiding the force of attackers.

I dunno, it interests me. Sphism/winksmiley

My school is more along the lines of the kick/punch/block method, although we do mix in some things about escaping/using holds, throws, arm bars, etc. And despite the aforementioned bit of confusion it's a very good school. Grand Master Roberts was one of the first to bring martial arts to northern Virginia, if I remember right. And he's in the same group as some great martial artists, if you look at who he trained under.

Don't think they based any movies off us, though. Sphism/winksmiley

Did some investigation into your martial art too- ever seen THIS?

Explains all those strange things you talked about (sorry I laughed  , please don't beat me up  )

I think you're exactly right with the joint spirit way interpretaion, I've seen it translated both ways in alot of places and that one makes more sense to me.

Japanese translation/interpretation is also a bit of a hobby for me. Your sig is an interesting example.
Heve you seen THIS?
Very usefull tool! Always in my favorites.

That's neat stuff, hadn't seen it before. Master Roberts trained under Hwang Kee at one point, so I did know a little bit about him. But I really ought to read up more on martial arts history at some point.

And no need to worry about me coming after you. Doesn't really seem worth flying across the Atlantic just to beat one guy up. Sphism/winksmiley

I have Jim Breen's WWWJDIC bookmarked, actually. It's so very helpful. Have you seen THIS? I find it really handy, too. My signiture is a ことわざ(Japanese proverb) that I rather like. Another fun one is
ばかはしななきゃなおらない。"Only death can cure a fool." I think it's pretty self-explainatory.

My Japanese is actually really rusty. Should pick back up again once I start taking classes in college, though. Sphism/gigglesmiley
