Hello from Norn Iron
Hey there everyone... how's things?
I'm Clare, am 26, and a sub-editor from Belfast in Northern Ireland (though you wouldn't know it from the disgraceful spelling, sorry :oops
.
I've been posting on HoP, but have been lured over here with talk of SpherculHop day
Anyways, I didn't write an intro thread there... so thought I should correct that mistake here ![]()
Well then, I've been playing with poi for about 2 years and while I know the basics, I'm nowhere near the snazzy technical flippy bendy stuff most of you guys seem to be. But one day ![]()
I first saw firedancing in Byron Bay in Australia, picked it up in Brisbane, set my poi on fire in Airlie and haven't looked back since. I travelled for two and a half years through Oz, Nz and Se Asia, so was amazingly lucky to meet some incredibly good dancers and spinners who taught me many things.
Emmm... what else would you like to know?! I like dancing to djembe and didj, but if that's not available funk and hip hop are also marvellous. I'm loving the Roots, Chi-Lites, Micheal Franti and Spearhead, some wicked bands from NZ like Fat Freddy's Drop and Trinity Roots - ahhh, a mix of old skool classics with the funkiest among us ![]()
Anyways, I arrived back in Belfast at the beginning of May and am saving money to get back on the road... still trying to keep the poi-ing alive through the wind, rain and thunderstorms. We're getting a nice little network of Irish spinners happening - which is great, cos it's the best way to learn :21
Ok, what else? Am 5"6, long brownish hair, greeny type eyes... lol, ok am running out of stuff now... so take care and lovely to meet you all...
Please let me know if you're ever visiting
Love Clare xx

Hello there, welcome to the site! :57
Nice intro... my girlfriend is a sub-editor as well, well, she's being made redundant next month... but she is for now
Hello from Norn Iron
:57 Welcome to Spherculism!! I'm sure you'll love it here. Make sure you check out Matt's tutorial vids for some amazing footage of flippy bendy stuff.
Also - I'm glad to know there's another hip-hop fan around here! My latest favorite album: Gift of Gab, 4th Dimensional Rocket Ship --- he's from Jurassic Five (my all time favorite hiphop group) and the new shiznit is outstanding.

Hey Spiralx, where does your g'friend work?!
And thanks for the hello Sauce... check out www.amplifier.co.nz and you should be able to find short samples of the Trinity Roots and Fat Freddys stuff - it's kindof funky hip hop... sweet as

My G/F + I always wanted to do that, in fact we came within 3 months of going but then she went and got herself pregnant
Not that I'm unhappy about having a daughter of course
Sorry, I'm rambling, who's thread is this?

Hello from Norn Iron
For the record, Gift of Gab is from Blackalicious, a San Francisco-based hip hop group (which I have yet to check out to be honest)... Juarassic 5 is indeed incredible and MY favorite hip hop group of all time as well (I especially like Chali Tuna).
Couple of things to check out if you like J5:
The Funky Precedent - a compilation that features J5 and a bunch of other amazing stuff... I camped next to the producer of this at Burning Man 2000 (he ran the Plug 4 camp, which kept us awake all night unfortunately).
And of course if you're a J5 fan, you should totally check out this video of a DJ Format tune that features vocals by Chali Tuna and Akil from J5.
http://www.ruben.fm/format.html
(and the wacky costumes are a good prep for Burning Man - not that I have playa on the brain or anything...)
Hello from Norn Iron
Jeez - well, thank you orbit. I always get them messed up (J5 & Blackalicious) since they perform together quite often ... and in fact, members of each group appear on the albums of the other. And I usally have both CD's in the random changer at once. And I was introduced to both groups by the same person at the same time.
But we're hi-jacking Clare's thread. Welcome Clare - sorry to bring the "for the record" vibe to your intro thread, sweetie. That type of thing should really be saved for later so you are not scared of us!!
xoxoxo

Hello from Norn Iron
Hey there girl
Wecome to the site make yourself and home. but your feet up.
have a god one and i'll see you around!
Hello from Norn Iron
Hello again lovely people,
It's really nice to get your messages, and never worry about thread-hijacking - sure what's the point of having an opinion if you can't state it blatantly whenever you feel like it
I'm pretty sure I saw Blackalicious play in Auckland last year... not sure though, I saw loads of great stuff (my ex was a drummer in a funk band  )... what do you guys think of Michael Franti? He can be a little cheesy, but he's got such an energetic vibe (spearhead speak for themselves). Thanks for the advice on the other bands... as soon as I get some money, I'll check them out
Btw, Saucy... just noticed you're from Brooklyn, NYC. I know a very lovely firefighter who lives there... works in the village. I won't ask if you know him, cos that'd be silly.
StoneT, thanks sir, nice to be here
And there's no reason why you can't go travelling once the wee girl is a bit older. I met loads of couples travelling round SE Asia with young children... it's a great learning experience for them and the local people LOVE kids.
Poikid: Ireland is great... for the 10 days a year it doesn't rain  then it starts to get kindof annoying when you realise it's not spinning weather, again! But I suppose you get used to it... and there's always the pubs
And I totally agree with you, learning from others, when they're standing in front of you is the best way to learn... but video comes a close second!
Spiralx, sorry to hear about the outsourcing... but I'm sure your g'friend won't find it too hard to get another job. Newspapers are always crying out for experienced subs, even on a freelance basis.
Btw, I was just wondering... I heard there was a great juggling convention in Belfast last year - did any of you go? I phoned the circus school today and they said it wasn't on this year, just the one in Bristol - I take it this is a travelling thing?
Take care,
Love Clare x
Hello from Norn Iron
Hey Clare!! Want to hear a strange coincidence?? Even though I'm sure I don't know any firefighters in NYC - I believe I met a friend of yours last night. Spun some poi with him in the park, and he came out with me and my friends for a meal afterwards .... Aidan?
:57
it's a small world after all.
Hello from Norn Iron
Lol, yep, I know - he just messaged me!
Yeah, Aidan is my lovely firedancer friend from Cork... he's coming up here for a visit next week when he gets home.
He's a good dancer, eh?! Only been doing it for a few months.
He's a particularly lovely guy too :42
(Wow, you guys have lots of cool little emoticons... my god, I'm spending too long on the internet  )
xx
Hello from Norn Iron
Heya. um... I'm pretty short of stuff to say in these topics now. So could you share your favorite Colour with us and pretned I had something cool to say?
Anyway welcome to the site.
Oh and what's this SpherculHop day I keep hearing about? I swear I saw it mentioned in at least two other threds today.
Hello from Norn Iron
Hi there and welcome! A little late, but I haven't been posting so much recently.
Hello from Norn Iron
Hey there lads, how's things?
Thanks for the welcome...
My favourite colours are dark greens and blues with the occasional deep purple thrown in for good measure
The SpherculHop day thingme has it's very own forum on this lovely site... but I think the idea is that spinners all around the world get together in their own little groups on the last weekend of October for a kindof global fire meeting.
I think both Spherculism and HoP were organising events at the same time, and it was decided it would be better to hold a big meeting all together, rather than foolishly having two seperate groups.
Which I think is a marvellous idea.
There's going to be lots going on in England, and little meetings all over the place... find out if there's one near you, and if not - start one (even if it's just you there
!!!!)
This could be such a great thing if it catches on... maybe even in the future we could do it for charity or something (lol, getting ahead of myself).
Anyways, take care and hope you're all having a great weekend
(ps: this weekend, for the first time, I managed a hyperloop-thingy (the one where you tangle your chains, then untangle) on fire!! Wayhey, been trying to get that one for ages!!)
take care
xx
Hello from Norn Iron
hey clare...
it's taken me a while BUT.... welcome to Spherculism! :57
glad we manged to entice you over here + well done for getting the sphercular ball rolling in Ireland (and the fire hyperloops). did you say you might be at the Bristol JC or am i tripping?
take care
Chris :21
p.s. guys if you love J5 make sure you check out the 1st Ozomatli album with Tuna + Cut Chemist!
Hello from Norn Iron
Hey Clare, Welcome. I know exactly how you feel with the constant rain and weather that you really can't spin in because I live very close to the lakes and scotland. Oh well there's always those pubs! Hope you learn lots of new stuff here. x
Hello from Norn Iron
Hello, hello...
We'll definitely be doing something in Ireland for SpherculHop day, but it's not going to be as impressive as the big things organised in England - mainly because we don't have very many people... lots of jugglers, but only a handful of firespinners - but hey, we'll do our best
Anyways, I'd love to come over to Bristol, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it... bah, but let me know how it goes
I've been telling everyone, so I thought I'd post it here too - saw the Roots in Dublin on Monday - ohmigod!!! That band is just unbelievable, they are so tight, and it's rare to see a group where every member is a master at his instrument - it was superb.
Also went to the aftershow party where ?uestlove was DJing (he played some funky old school stuff, but his DJing maybe wasn't always the best :lol
. I met a couple of the band and was speaking to the guitarist for a while - such nice lads.
:42 ahhh... that's going to keep me happy for weeks
Take care
xx
Hello from Norn Iron

hElLo
Well, i too have been super lame at posting recently.
But it's great to have you on board, we've been expecting you.
I went to Cork once for my hols and it was fab. Great food and very pretty. Stayed in Baltimore.
Fire tangles eh... Anyone would think you were a spherculist
¦m¦
Hello from Norn Iron
Lol, god, I wish... I can only do mere beginner cool moves... but I will get there in the end
And you were expecting me, eh?! Sweet, I feel so special
Or perhaps you were just hoping for someone else to help in the ongoing struggle to put young rev in his place
I'm hoping for a visit to Cork soon (haven't been before) to visit my firedancing friend Aidan - it was foretold by the old wise woman down the street that he too will be a Spherculist one day :8
And Mr Chutney... am definitely into the SpherculHop thing. I think everyone in Ireland is really missing the fact there is no Belfast convention this year... so I'm going to speak to the Belfast circus school next week and see what we can arrange. If that doesn't work, it'll be just the faithful 6 firedancers who meet up already - only this time in glorious halloween outfits
(still good)
take care xx
Hello from Norn Iron
