>> FINDING FUNDING <<
Spherculism has been around for a while now and we are over a thousand strong.
When this project started i looked into finding funding for the project.
I didn't get very far because i had a million and one other things to do at the time.
But now I have the time and the inclination to apply for funding from 'Arts Council England'.
I figure that instead of applying for personal funding for the project I should apply on behalf of this community.
Firstly I'd like to know if anyone amongst us has any experience with finding funding. Has anyone recieved funding from Arts Council England or any other arts council?
Does anyone know of any other funding body that may be interested in our sphercular community?
Is there a kind hearted soul out there who can help with the funding application? I'm alright at english but have no experience of funding applications.
So then. What projects would you like to see spherculism accomplish?
What would you say we have accomplished thus far?
We have an okay website based in phpnuke that allows us to discuss anything we choose. I've aquired plenty of server space and have watched the community grow steadily for the passed 9 months. We now have 3 full time moderators who devote a great deal of time and energy to the site. Without whom the site wouldn't function.
I have filmed everything i know about poi and provided over 200 free video downloads for everyone. The feedback from which has been breathtaking. The quality of poi that i've been seeing lately makes me feel very proud.
We have discussed the terminoloogy of poi at great length and begun the formation of the 'Encyclopoidia'. This has been very much a 'group effort'. The goal of this project is to fascilitate understanding between our members. Text is a notoriously difficult medium with which to discuss complex bodily movements. By defining the terms we have a far better understanding of what each of us is talking about. This in turn reduces the ammount of arguments and helps make our community a particularly happy one.
But the sphercular project is about more than just poi swinging. Spherculism, to me, encompasses many different activities. Poi just happens to be the one in which i am most proficient. Other sphercular forms include staff, diablo, devilsticks, kung fu, contact juggling, break dancing and so on. Any form of movement which involves focusing your energies into spheres and circles, or as i lovingly refer to them ~ Sphercles.
A major goal for spherculism is to teach people how to teach themselves and others. Once this skill has been refined it is possible to apply it to many different sphercular disciplines. It's a fine balance between the 'Rate of learning new things' and the 'Reward gained from that learning'. There is a feedback loop and if that balance is struck then learning can be accellerated very rapidly.
The community is currently working hard to organise many gatherings around the world in celebration of reaching 1000 members. A future project for spherculism is to create a renegade style convention for spherculists to meet each other and share their skills. It will focus on the similarities between the forms so that, for example, a staff spinner can learn movement from a brake dancer and vise versa.
Another project will be to design and produce beter tools for us all to play with. I find the quality of many products on the market to be severely sub standard. I have a BSc in Industrial Design and I have plenty of designs in the pipeline and am forging strong links with companies who can produce and distribute those product designs.
There will also be a poi dvd coming out which will aid learning and fuel understanding even more than the free videos on the site. Progress of this project has been hindered by a lack of funds. However, I have secured enough 'presale promises' already to pay for the project and I have learned all the skills needed to create a saleable dvd. I have held meetings with all those who will be involved in the project from cameramen and editors right through to sales staff and distributors. I fill in many of the gaps with my experties as brand stylist and poi teacher.
***************************************
So there are some of my thoughts. I'd love to hear some of yours, especially if you have never posted before because you are as much a part of this site as everybody else.
Also, if anyone has experience with pricing projects then we really need to talk because funders always require detailed spending plans.
With an injection of funding I believe we can really push things forward.
Thanks for your continuing support,
matt

FINDING FUNDING
as far as i can tell, there are at least three uk spinning sites; namely, spherculism.com, poiinthepark.net, and soton-firespinning.co.uk
so if you want funding, it might be worth doing a co-ordinated effort, so at least you can claim to be representative.

I is doing a Computer aided product design course so if you need any technical drawings or maybe models of poi's, staffs etc i maybe able to help.
FINDING FUNDING
Group funding is a good idea but i feel like it would become super political. For now I think i'd prefer to sort out spherculism. Then once i have a better idea how the process works we could apply for joint funding.
Where are you doing your course chipmunk? I've done a lot of computer aided design myself. Cheers for the replys,
Form filling does my nut.

i really think that what you are doing is really kool. What about the national lottery they give out grants. Personally i would like to learn different things such as staff devilsticks etc so those tutorials will be kool. Maybe forums for those aswell. Again the trading post would be a great idea. hope it all happens cos it would only be for the better

And we'll see what we can do about find you some paid work as a teacher. I'm sure I could find a few takers in the New York area (in fact, that's pretty much all me & Deet have been talking about since leaving BRC) ... I'm not rich, but I could put you up for a while, as long as you don't mind an airbed and a pitbull in the house .....

I am sorry. I have absolutely nothing that I can offer to help :'(

Hi matt,
I dont have much to contribute here by way of poi skills/ideas for you arts grant but i am a budding staffer and happy to help where i can.
I'm also a professional draughtsman/CAD technician and happy to help there also if you ever had the need.
I reckon you'll do fine matt, you have a rare talent for innovation and i wish you all the best.
FINDING FUNDING
Another CAD Technician? Gees how many of us are there on this site?
FINDING FUNDING
Argh!!! It's the attack of the super geeks...
Ahem, sorry.
Ok, Matt, considering the nature of the grant, I think it would help muchly to draw out the whole idea of 'community' also.
Perhaps:
Fire spinning is a new art and it's participants can be found in every walk of life, from young or old, male or female, rich or poor.
Spherculism.com, as one of the primary websites dedicated to the fire arts, delivers an invaluable service for participants who would otherwise be unable to advance their art.
It has created a real community, in the traditional sense, where people can exchange views, advice and stories, and where, most importantly, spinners can form friendships which often translate into gatherings and meetings all around the UK.
Spherculism.com has advanced the global and national development of a new artform (an artform which finds its basis in the strong and proud Maori culture), and evidence of its growth can be seen in the number of people who join daily.
Or something....
Anyways, Matt, if you want me to give you a hand with structuring, etc... let me know.
Take care
Clare xo

all I know is: Tepooka fill out LOADS of scottish arts council funding forms. So if's not cheeky like, you could probably ask bluecat for help. (Obviously the country isn't the same, but the forms probably are.) I dunnoe thou.
I would offer to help, but I'm crap at english. I do better at java, prolog, C++, xml and python and stuff like that.
So if ya ever need any help of that kind...
Do you want me to upload my videos to your gallery? (They be quite big like... That's the main point that stopped me before. Cos they be PHAT, phat and old.)
and yes, I am a super geek. But I'm not attacking. Christmas has made me too fat to do so.
FINDING FUNDING
being an *ahem* drama graduate.... i know a little about arts funding.
simple answer: there isnt any!
well there is, buts its fairly hard to get hold of.
AFAIK, you have to apply to your local arts council who are the only ones able to fund projects.
what makes it tricky is that you arent eg trying to set up a local poi group (for local people) which could be funded by the local arts council. but rather asking for funding for something that is a (inter)national website. so may not even fall under "arts"?
however, im sure there is some kind of national arts council who must have a budget?
i can email lots of my drama type friends who have managed to get funding, see what they did?
FINDING FUNDING
when i was working i was incharge of putting the in for bids/funding etc including one really scary one that was for £350,000 and we got it
its a horrible thing to have to do but if you need a hand anytime feel free to pick my brain...after all i don't use it 8O
FINDING FUNDING
thanks Gothfrogette for the offer.
I've been too busy with other things to even think about funding. If you wanna help out then my friend said that i could budget for the cost of a person to look for funding etc. I'e you can pay yourself a wage from the funding if it is succesful.
£350,000 ~ wow that's a lot. I figure £5,000 would be enough to get all the sphercular projects rolling. Mainly ~ Update website, produce dvd, fund poibot (interactive web based movement teaching/exploration), then there is the annual sphercular ball.
How is it best to go about getting funding? I'm sure the site / movement must be eligable and with even a little money i could do so much.
thanks for any help,
matt
FINDING FUNDING
one of my insentives at work was to get the funding for ALL of the wages as well as the regular stuff, and yes it is scary.
the best way to look at it is if it were a business because
1 funders tend to prefer you giving them something along the lines of a business plan.
2 it helps you plan your goals and work out how to get there
having a forum/groups etc online helps as not only does it class as part of the 'business' but also as market research, most places including princes trust ask for 10 months worth, which isn't really alot and the longer the better.
Then the way i did it was to contact businesses that delt with the product so to speak and if they can't help you they are most likely to know some one who can.... (in my case the product was kids, social services etc also setting up a youth group i am going to have to do this again) with a site like this try juggling clubs too.
all else fails then Google, hehe search goverment sites, co-operatives and the like. its takes bloody ages.
oh and the reason why i'm not working now is due to illness not loosing bids
you know where i am if you need some help :45
