the nature of monkey is... IRREPRESSIBLE!!

Well that's what the TV told me anyway...

anyway, I've been a member of the site for a few months now just looking at the videos really, I got here through a few friends in Newcastle (hi Luke/Tom/Amy etc.)

I've been doing poi for a few months now, here's a little list of the moves I can do if you want to know:

butterfly (overhead, behind the head and behind the back)
3beat weave (forward, reverse, behind the back reverse)
5beat weave (forward but I'm making some progress with backwards at the moment)
windmill
corkscrew (and with an extra circle up and down if you know what I mean)
chase the sun
fountain
a few assorted basic wraps (upper leg and lower arm mainly)

I'm sure there are a few more I can't think of at the moment but basically I've just got to the point where I'm moving away from set routines and free styling most of the time which is teaching me a lot more than the routines ever did but it's bloody hard work to get there! I usually put in about 10 hours a week with poi and I like to go for a spin in my lunch break at work to chill out a bit.

I started spinning with fire and never really thought about using normal ones until I went to a festival and got my paraffin confiscated on the first night, I was pretty pissed off so I went and bought some strobe poi to take their place, they're a bit hard but at least I don't get covered in soot every time I have a practice now!

Anyway, that's enough about me, I've run out of steam!

Welcome! :57

You certainly do a lot more spinning than I do, I've gotten really lazy over the last year or so! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Heh, give me a year and I'll be a lot more lazy too!! Sphism/winksmiley

Hoorah, now you can have a proper welcome. Very impressive list of moves, keep it up. :29 :5 :9

lol i remember when i had the exact same moves list. i find it pretty difficult to get flowing properly unless im spinning backwards(even tho i feel more comfortable spinning forwards) for some reason i spin better when i don't know what im doing. Sphism/confusedsmiley

keep up the good work. Sphism/gigglesmiley

p.s
try a hyperloop

DjMagicFairy: Thanks man! Sphism/gigglesmiley

FireBreath: I tend to find everything easier forwards but I've been trying to work out some joins and direction changes recently, having said that I only worked out how to go from a weave into a butterfly earlier today!

Hyperloops are a nightmare! I've tried doing them with chains and strings but I just can't get it right, time to make some sock poi methinks!

Also, Could someone point me in the direction of a buzzsaw? I've seen you talking about it a lot but I can't find any vids or anything...

sock poi rule :!:
try putting a relativly heavy weight (eg juggling ball) in the end. and have a play with the lenghth of your poi, it took me ages to find a comfortable practice length.

i tend to find things easier forwards but i find i get a better response if i learn it backwards. i don't know if i know many joins. the thing about poi is that everything that you don't know seems really difficult (which may be the root of my addiction)

A WikiPoidia entry:
The buzzsaw is a move where the poi are spun in a circle in the same direction between the arms. The poi will make a wheel between your arms, with your hands at the center. Can be done split time or in time and can be done in any plane as long as it's done between the arms.

keep ur poi short so that they dont hit your face.(something i learnt the hard way)

AHHH!!! I do buzzsaw already, never tried it on any other plane than top-bottom right infront of my face though, looks really good with fire. I've been calling this one inner circle though as that's what they called it on the site I first saw it on, can't for the life of me remember which one though...

I'll be getting some kit for sock poi next weekend, I'm also going to look at getting some chicken wire and making a cage for wire wool but I'm a bit worried about having melting slag flying round me!

yeah airborn moulten slag is generally not a good thing to be dealing with
iv been trying to learn buzzsaw hyperloops but i just can't get my head around them. ah well iv only been practicing it for 2 days.

Hello hello!

!!!!WELCOME!!!!

How goes it MM

Awwweeessome to finally get to say hello properly Sphism/gigglesmiley

nah, I could never grow sideburns that funky, it'd be blasphemous! I'm more of a sandy, I usually wear a plactic "bald patch" to work in the hopes of looking like a sea dragon, people tend to point and laugh though... 8O

Look at the "fire poi... for hardcore poiple" thread.

cheers faerie! Looks like I won't be trying Wire wook for a bit if they go through clothes like that.
I think I'll be sticking to my coloured flame project for now instead until I develop the 'balls' to try and throw moltem metal at myself Sphism/winksmiley

Do you look like this then. For faerie without wings monkey in the matrix. xx

Blasphemy! Stone the blasphemer!

ok, I suppose starting a new monkey religion isn't really going to work is it

No-one is to stone anyone until blow this whistle. Even, and I say this very carefully, even if they do say Matrixmonkey! *lol*

heh, this is all getting a bit Monty Pyhton for me!

Jim x

Hi guys, I haven't been online much recently as I quit my job a little while ago and I've only just really sorted myself out, lots of work trying to find a decent job but I've finally got one. Needless to say the poi have been getting sulky sat in the corner for so long so it's time to start picking them up again really.

hey there moonkeh, congrats on a new job, now get spinning!!! =D

Jim

Hehey Sphism/gigglesmiley

Congratulations. What did you find?

got me a job at Vodafone, pay is ok (I can survive at any rate) and the staff perks are pretty good as well, just got myself one of those new video phones and one for the girlfriend as well, means I can make filthy video calls when she's not around!! So all in all pretty good, anyway, I'm off to show a few people how to spin propperly... 8O
