Spinning and My Girlfriend
About three weeks ago I spun fire for two of my friend Brittnay's friends. Brittnay, Corey, and Kyle all dance and act so when Brittnay told them I spun they were interested not just because spinning is so damn cool 
but because being performers themselves they wanted to see what it was like. I tend to notice people who don't know know what spinning is usually are kinda skeptic about what its gonna look like. I spun for them and they were really impressed, dissolving all skepticism. Corey especially. She kept asking me about spinning like where I learned and how I found out about it. We ended up talking all night afterwards at a party. Now we are dating and it's really great. I probably never would have met her if i didn't spin. I'm even teaching her how to spin. Which is great cause now i don't have to be a lone spinner anymore. I'm going to have to have her set up a spherculism account soon. Teaching is also helping me improve alot also. In the past week I have figured out a whole bunch of moves like utl weave, a buttload of new throws, btb hyperloops, and bringing back and incorporating alot of neglected basics like split-time giant butterfly-overhead butterfly combos mixed up with impossible weaves. Those are yummy. Man I love spinning so much. It's brightened my life in so many ways. :36

Oh yeah - and isn't teaching so much harder than learning, even?? But it does teach you to think about all the moves you do in different ways to be able to tell others ... and you get better at it yourself. This is the best thing about spinning, I think ... our skills grow geometrically as we meet others and teach others about our art.

Absolutely!! Whenever you are headed into NYC, look me up (this goes for all the spherculists!!) and we'll head out to some of my favorite NYC-stylee spinning spots. I can promise you the most beautiful NYC skyline, IMHO, provided the evening is clear. And against that backdrop - fire spinning! What's more beautiful than that??
I'm still bummed that we didn't get to go to the Waterfront when adop was here.
But we did spin socks together, at least!

Whilst I met my current g/f a long time before we went out, apparently one of the things that most changed her opinion from friend to "I want to go out with you" was my trying to teach her "how to pull via the medium of poi" one drunken summer afternoon in the park

well see my g/f got me to spin... one day she was in the bathroom shaving and bathing and I decided to pick up these glowsticks she had been spinning forever.. I figured.. I don't dance, so why not do something.. got the bf windmill, weave, and cork by the time she came out and was fluid between them.. she kept spinning for a few more months and then sort of dropped off... because well.. she can't handle being hit by them... though she does still pcik them up once in a blue moon.. but for now shes the main office of 'women of poiple' and helps young women come to terms with the fact that they do not exist while we spin poi... (not joking.. I'm serious.. like one of my friends girl got up and walked off at a party and stood behind this pole and NOONE saw her leave, because we were either spinning or watching someone spin.. OUCH)

Yeah, fire spinning is definitely a chick magnite... but I don't think you're supposed to then ignore them. I think I found a good balance at Burning Man this year of time with poi and time with my girlfriend. The only exception might be when Saucy distracted me with poi when I was supposed to be getting the car and my girlfriend was cleaning out the dusty tent... oops!

Funny you mention it, I won a poi spinning strip tease at ejc. I was the only one who didn't take my trousers off cos my shoes have lots of buckles that take for ever to undo.
I think the thing that clinched it was the 1 handed wibbling whilst taking my t-shirt off
then spinning my t-shirt in 1 hand and 2 poi in the other

Well I was spinning in my room and my friend and his girlfriend were on my bed watching. I got bored so I decided "hey lets see If I can drop my pants while spinning" So I got into a one handed butterfly, and proceeded to drop my pants while spinning. Everything was fine until I started trying BTL stuff with the crotch of my pants at about my knees. It just evolved from there.
I'm not sure if I'd do this one on webcam for anyone.

i like your story very much, keep on teaching, its the best present you can make for her.
i learned spinning since 1 year ago from my boyfriend and now he left me. its really sad but, i will never give up spinning (and never give up loving him), because teaching me spinning poi was the best present i ever got.

My teaching has paid off. On Saturday night my girlfriend won talent in the Miss Fulton County Pageant which is a prelim for Miss New York State. Anyway she spun poi for her talent and wowed the audience. They were cheering throughout. Everyone loved it. She wore a blue sequin costume and spun green beaming balls. She spun to a portion of the Phish song Cars Trucks Buses. She did great and I am so proud of her. She ended up getting 600 dollars in scholarships for Miss Congeniality and talent. I don't really like these things but you have to support the oines you care about. Plus it is nice having tons of people tellin you how hot your girlfriend is and that she was the prettiest girl in the pageant.
Since she did so well shes going to enter a coupole of other pageants and hopefully we can get a video of her spinning at one of those to put online.

Last night Corey (my sweetheart) won a preliminary pageant for Miss New York State! She ended up getting a thousand dollars in scholarships and a bunch of miscellaneous prizes. Hopefully at the Miss New York State pageant she'll be allowed to spin fire. Just thought I would add this lil follow up on her. Me very proud

nice...
what i've found about girls who dig the dancing and want to learn... they tend to want to learn for you! i.e. in they want to do it so they have something else to do with you! I mean face it, we tend to be really engrosed by what we do, particularly when it comes to fire! well tht's how it iz around here.
and i've know a couple of girls who have started learning because their boyfriends do it and it gives them more time with you!
i never push a girlfriend to learn, coz a person must want to do it for themselves, not for sum1 else, not for ego, or anything like tht! It must be for yourself!

Teaching is a great way to improve your own dancing, cos it forces you to go back to the basics, to things tht you hardly even remember, the simplest of the simplest. You repeate all the stuff that you never do any more! Never forget that all the moves you learn can be traced back to those first simple moves!

Oh I think maybe at first she wanted to learn to spin with me but she'll be nipping at my heels soon in terms of moves learnt. Last night we had a breakthrough. I taught her btb waistwraps, btb weave, the basic hyperloop, a bunch of same time crap,(which I just became really interested in), and a bunch of other stuff. One day hse'll make me look silly spinning next to her since she has such a heavy dance background. But i'm proud of her so it really doesn't matter. I know she really enjoys it herself and it gives us something to do together. Even though I'm a complete poi-addict and freaking practially dream about it twice a week.
