sphercommerse...

I'm gonna set up an e-commerse site so that we can sell our wares to each other.

It's been on the cards for ages but after talking to tim at the weekend i've gone ahead with the idea.

It should end up very much like a Local Village Market. If you have something to sell like poi, fire poi, wicking, staff or whatever you'll have access to an online shop.

You'll make something to a certain standard, ie nothing dangerous or crap. Then take a photo of it. Upload the photo and info, give it a price and stock quantity. Then people will be able to buy the stuff direct from you. If you rip someone then they will give bad feedback and you will be barred. If you make something great, at a good price and send it quickly then you'll get a good review and be able to sell more stuff. Very much like e-bay shops but a little more private and specialised.

I might insist that you send me a sample first to check the quality ~ then maybe i could review products or something. Or take professional photos so the site looks nicer.

So instead of selling your poi to oddballs - for example - for £4, then them selling them for £10. You sell them direct for £8, donate say £2 to spherculism. Then the customer saves £2, the seller makes an extra £2 and spherculism get £2. This will work because websites have far less overheads than shops and also because everyone shares the workload.

It's not Capitalism, it's spherculism Sphism/winksmiley

Any thoughts?

as long as debit cards are accepted i can participate!

great idea

thanks matt

Yeah nice Sphism/smilesmiley
Will definately be a good addition to the site.

I'd love to sell some of my artwork online, but need to know more about copyrighting etc... Any idea where I can find this information? Googling it makes me scream and run away from the 800,000 or so matches!

(PS. I do watercolours, oil paintings etc, and charge for them as £5 per hour of work going into them, if anyone's interested... Fantasy art and pet portraiture to your order...)

FWW ~ you automatically own the copyright to anything you create.

That means you can put a little c in a circle on it.

Now if anyone wants to copy it they can, but officially they will be breaking the law if they don't have your permission. Now if they were to sell prints of your work without permission you should be able to screw them for it.

Are you worried about putting thumbnail images on the net? Cos they would only print out about 2cm square.

Have been testing sphercommerse and it rocks Sphism/smilesmiley Also found a plugin that might allow everyone to have separate shops within the site. So you could personalise your space, just like a little market Sphism/smilesmiley

will we be able to use sphercommerce to sell second hand stuff?

i don't see why not. You'll be able to sell anything someone is willing to buy. As long as it's not illegal that is.

I'm a little concerned about selling fire poi to americans because of their willingness to do something dumb and then blame (and try to sue) me. i'm not sure it would even be enough to put something like

"USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK - IF YOU HURT YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT - TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS"

Sorry americans but selling to the US is a very risky business, how do american fire product companies do it???

m

I live in Canada, but the American sue-happy society is slowly coming here (Yeah, soon we'll have people sueing for 8 million over hot drinks).

A simple disclaimer will work fine in most cases, everything here has them these days. Even on childrens pain killers it says not to operate heavy machinery Sphism/winksmiley Even if they do try to sue, there would be little to nothing they could do to you because of the different country problem Sphism/winksmiley America doesn't let anyone with out *alot* of money interfere with out countries (though, the ones they do let, go nuts with it).

I like this idea very much.

as an american i feel compelled to respond. fact is, i know very few people who actually buy from companies. most of the people I know make their own fire toys from raw materials, or have a friend (i.e. ME Sphism/gigglesmiley ) make them for them. there are a couple of companies with websites ... bear claw mfg, luxotica (but i think they're canadian), renegade juggling, fire by riz .... i think they just put big disclaimers on their sites ... but I don't know the people that run them, so i don't know if they've ever been sued. interesting point ... it's the reason I don't have a website up proclaiming that I make and sell poi -- it's a little underground thing I do in my city ... not for profit, just barely at cost, and only for my friends .... don't get me wrong, I think i would love to be in the business, but I couldn't afford the insurance, and honestly don't think there'd be enough business to pay my rent and feed me, anyway.

But if spherculism gives you an easy way of selling stuff you make, would that be an incentive to make more stuff?

Must look into the legality of putting a disclaimer like...

"Do not set this on fire. If you do so you've only got yourself to blaim" Sphism/smilesmiley

m

absolutely!! It may seem weird, but I am forever making new things and just giving them away - simply to keep working on better ways to build things. Just last week, Dee made a pair of double poi and just sent them to a friend in L.A. to see if she liked them ... if there's people here who'd like to re-imburse for cost and shipping, I just like creating ... "it's not commercialism - it's spherculism" ... of course, the disclaimer is mandatory. and of course, I'd also be happy to send something to Matt for inspection before selling anything ....

Sphism/gigglesmiley

Oh! and speaking of commerce ....

any chance you'll be putting together a DVD of your vids? I would happily pay top dollar-erm, euro? - for something I could view on my TV .... I ***still*** can't view the vids on this site from my own computer, and I think my friends are really getting sick of me logging on to spherculism when I visit them Sphism/winksmiley

I found out about it by looking through tattoo mags; been drawing a few flashes recently. My current bloke is doing his inking apprenticeship, which means there's loads of stuff about it lying around. (Ooh, Matt- I saw the Wildcat advert you did on the back of one of them and got all excited! I'm sad like that.)

HAHA,

i've not been doing the skin deep ads recently. That's my mate joe.

I'm so bored of graphic design.

Making a wicked little flash site for wildcat at the moment tho, and learning lots of 3d graphics Sphism/smilesmiley

I really want to get sphercommerse up and running in time for the summer.

To do that i first want to find maybe 7 people who are keen to manufacture poi related products on a regular basis. I'm confident you'll make more money selling thru sphism than anywhere else.

So anyone interested? I@m guessing we'll need poi and fire poi, meteors, sock poi? What ever else. I'm working (slowly) on some custom designs for products.

So if you wanna be part of this just get involved. Tell us what you can make, maybe take some photos and send them to me ~

I've made a theme for that osCommerse recently. Now i've done one it's easy to make one for spherc. So all we need now are the products.

I've come to realiase that if poiple are gonna learn all the stuff on site then they need some good quality toys to play with. Like nicely weighted wibbles and so on.

So lets get a bit of motivation behind sphercommerse. The aim is to create the feel of a little village market, but on a global scale. Members make stuff and sell to other members, spherculism provides an easy way for this to happen and takes a small ammount of the money.

Also, does any one know anything about running this kind of web business? Cos i know very little. Thanks,

matt

I'm with you, Matt. I've actually been working on a website and figuring out the business model for selling poi and hoops and meteors and stuff in my long absence from spherculism. When I get home tonight, I'll send you some of the photos and stuff we put together, OK?

So excited!!!

Saucy that's great news that you're up for it. Smit will be producing stuff in nottingham and there's been lots of interest in this.

What I have said to smit applys to you also. If this thing takes off and if your products are great and we get along well ( tick, tick, tick i imagine) then I can totally set you up with your own ecommerse site. Then I could act as a distributor of your products.

In the mean time we can all test the water with sphercommerse, which still needs a good name.. the best suggestion so far is the 'sphercular spin shop'

All i can say is that any efforts put into this project will be rewarded, you can get as deeply involved as you like.

m

Sphercumarket?

Spherculism Spin & Carry?

Spherc-OP?

I've been working off and on for a while on making a nice, durable set of poi (just some nice practice poi or something) that I could sell. My sister bought some poi one time and they were crappy quality, fell apart on her. Once I get a design that'll work well I'll be selling in there Sphism/smilesmiley
