Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
So I see that the 3 Beat Impossible Weave tutorial has has 328 hits.
I guess it's cos 'Butterfly Variations' is the first link under 'Spherculism Tutorials' and then '3 Beat Impossible Weave' is the first tutorial.
But it got me wondering how much you poiple are downloading. I've had a look at the stats for the site and there is an enormous ammount of traffic.
Have poiple downloaded every single one of the tutorials, or do you just download one every now and then? How well easy are things to download? What's it like on a slow connection?
What are your favourite tutorials? What would you like to see more of?
It's funny that in the current survey 'What do you wanna see next?' Loads of you have said you want more weave tutorials. I guess you realise there are 2 pages with 10 links on each. Can you do all that stuff? Cos i've got another 25 vids to upload, 15 of which are simpler versions of what's up already, 2 beat weaves and such like.
Personally i'd like to see all the 'Release the Poi' tutorials up and running. Think I've got another 39 of them.
I'm just interested to know what ou get up to round here. I mean, all I get to look at are a few pretty graphs and a load of random numbers. I don't have a really good feel of what you get up to.
Only around a fifth of the members have ever posted on the forum. Which I think is pretty strange. Why do you think this is? I thought more people would be totally confused about the vids and be asking loads moer questions. Or so you think that the little description under each tutorial link is enough for poiple to understand?
Feedback is always good and your voice will certainly be heard 'cos this is still a very new site. Only been taking on members for a little over 6 weeks and already we are 185 members strong.
How come so few poiple fill in their location details? It's so nice for everyone to be able to see where everyone else is. Would a help page be useful? Or is it pretty self explainitory? To be honest there are things on the site that i've never used, like Webmail. Do you use features like that? Are there any other features you'd like? Anyone know any php, MySql or other programing that would help me out?
Anywho, this the the official feedback thread, so tell me your desires and I shall do my best to manifest.

Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Hi matt
Amazing site, Maybe one of the reasons that no one posts is that the videos are so good. Written explanations are normally confusing unless you can do the move (I find anyway). If you look at HOP forums, most of the questions regarding a move end up with a "Can someone upload a video". You've preempted that by uploading loads of videos so people probably don't need to ask questions.
Regarding people not filling in Location details.. Err look at your own details ;-)
And what would I like to see more of. I'm just learning to isolate and some isolated variations of some of the moves would be great. Having real issues with reverse isolated 3bt weave. Keep hitting myself in the head! but forward looks so good (When I get it right!)
I don't get to meet many other spinners so tend to watch a few of your videos and then, inspired, go off to spin. You're gonna have half the county spinning in your style!! 8O
One Thing that would be wicked it to sell a DVD with high quality videos of all the moves with a nice menu system to navigate around the DVD. I guess you could even make it look like tihs site.
One thing that would be nice is a slo-mo option. Have a look at this video player someone has done here in flash. http://www.pentrix.com/
I'm a computer programmer  (it's my job as well) and am more that happy to help out in any way I can. You've given so much to the Poi comunity I'd be happy to help.
Just a few ideas/comments,
Keep up the good work..
Laters

Hi Matt. Love the site. I check out the videos fairly randomly, always look at all the new ones. My favorite are the throws, since there really new to me and stuff. I'd like to see what else you have for them. The hyperloop videos area really great too.
You reallly shoudl set an example for us by filling out your own details. I think I have mine filled out. Better check now in a min.
You really need some new emoticons though, some oldschool looking ones like on HoP. I was looking earlier today for some and I'm going to look some more tonight I think.
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
1) I love the site.. finally a poi site for poiple... exactly what we needed...
2) I've only checked out some of the tutorials.. so I'll get back to ya as I check them all out... I havent tried downloading them, although I should.. save some bandwith, although I don't think I've really repeated any of them..
3) I'd love more everything... lol.. I really like the idea of having a comprehensive site... I know that's what each site tries for, but here they are broken up nicely, and the vids are coming along very well..
keep up the good work pardner..
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Okay, i filled in my details, oops. To be honest I don't know how half of this site works
Always glad to hear you find the videos clear. A slo-mo option will come about soon enough but there is always the problem of 'how much to give away for free'. I never intended to put ALL these videos up on a site. I was gonna hold some back and then sell the rest on DVD's. But I figured I'd just give it all away in the hope that I would find my reward.
I have real issues with taking money for poi. I've never charged anyone for teaching them, really don't like performing for tiny ammounts of money. I would rather do it for free than put a price on what I do. Personally I find I can teach poi to pretty much anyone in a very small ammount of time. So should I charge like 10 times the going rate? That just doesn't seem right. I'd rather teach someone from whom I learn something. I wouldn't be anywhere near the standard I am if I hadn't taught countless poiple. The number of times I've shown poiple that under, over, out thing for a 3 beat weave ~ no wonder my planes are pretty clean. I just find that as soon as money gets involved it all gets a bit darkside.
But then of course. If I could earn say £60 a week through this site. Then I could afford to do my regular job for 4 days a week and devote an entire day to spherculism. All the videos would get uploaded within a few weeks and I'd still be able to pay my rent. But I dunno how to do it. I've spent around....I dunno....maybe 500 hours on this site so far and it cost around £80 to set up (Which would have been a whole lot more without the help of Animal Monday and Wildcat). Coleman said that he would happily pay for a copy of all the videos on the site, just so he didn't have to download them. I figure once all the vids are uploaded I could just burn the whole lot onto disk and sell it for say £5 plus postage. Then if I made a DVD I wouldn't wanna charge more than £10. Also I don't know how many poiple have access to dvd players, I mean if you've got a PC you can get a dvd drive for £30 these days and then are great because they are pretty cheap to make and send. But it's putting a price on knowledge. WHich I figure should be worth something but not necessarily money. I'd far rather come visit poiple and teach them for free in exchange for some place to stay and some food to eat. That way I don't need a lot of money.
Anywho, I'm rambling. Garthy, I've seen that pentrix site before, couple years back as well as a few weeks ago. I'm totally capable of doing frame controls like that as well as zoom and pan and multiple camera angles for any particular move. But that belongs more to the realm of 'Spherculism II and III' ~ Also I would like for those controls to be available only to those of you who put energy back into the site by chatting on the forums.
Hmm. As an aquarian who is very proud of his uniquness this is not a comforting thought. However, I have started to become inspired by what i've read in the forums, not to mension all i've learnt through cataloguing everything I know. So I still feel confident that i'll still retain my style. I just know that i'll meet someone one day who can do EVERYTHING i can do. Part of me is quite hesitant, but then if they can teach me something new then i'll be happy, spherculism will have been a success.
Achluo: I've been meaning to upload the throws for you for ages now. I'll try to do them this weekend and maybe upload them on monday, maybe
Emoticons are on their way, but i'm guessing you'd rather see some new throw videos first
Finite time
Thanks Rev. Any ideas you wanna add into the mix are always welcomed. I can host videos for you all and if i ever have time to fix the galleries you'll be able to use the site to upload them yourselves.
The list of moves i have on my PC are pretty comprehensive (201 in total) They will definitely all be up within a couple months.
I can't tell you how happy it makes me to hear you've learnt new stuff from this site. It totally inspires me to upload more. Cos sometimes i get down and i think that everyone is just taking from me and i find it pretty draining. And early on there was a period of a couple weeks when everyone just seemed to complain about things. It was such a downer.
I remember when Dub started posting in the forums. He just posted a little something about every clip he watched. Not a lot, just llike a little thanks. Now he's a moderator.
I dunno. How many of you would be prepared to give away everything you know about poi? Every little secret, every little trademark pattern. It's not an easy thing to do, especially when it takes hours and hours of your free time to do so. I've hardly spun poi at all in the past couple months. Just sat at my pc instead.
Anywho, I'm rambling. Glad you like the site and all that good stuff. Be sure to post in the 'New To You' forum if you learn something
Happy twirlin,

I love this site and videos are very good. I think videos are the only way to learn poi, besause explanations are pretty hard, and moreover i'm french so when it's in english it's hard to understand...
I know this site is new and it's evoluting every day but the site is already very good !!
I don't have many time to come on the site but i try to come in week ends.
I watch all the videos once but i think that i never can do some tricks especially hyperloops and release the poi because i don't have the good poi for these tricks...
I've learned all the basic moves and now i want to make all these moves fluently and "continuingly" (ie without stopping between moves) so i like the freestylin category !!
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
I've added some more smilies for you'll. When you're writing a post click 'View more Emoticons' to see them. Enjoy.

Well one thing good you've gotten out off giving us all these free videos is you've been elevated to god like status, and look at all your new friends you've got here. :21
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Actually matt... I don't hold any secrets... I'm always walking up to people spinning at parties and showing them something new.. I like teaching people, because thye always teach me something... And then to teach effectively, you have to really understand all the how and why of the moves. And its that understanding that leads to new craziness..
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Achluo: God like status is not quite the aim, just so long as there's a little mutual respect.
Rev: You Know, and you Understand, we'll meet one day.

I'll upload a couple new 'release the poi' vids tonight, haven't finished all of them yet but there's a couple tapbacks you are gonna love :34

Cheers. Those Tail Taps to Behind the Back Catch (Blind Catch) patterns are super tricky ~ The only move I had to have 4 attempts at getting on camera. No trial run though so I can be forgiven.
No longer is this the trickiest pattern I know though, I still have a little more up my sleeve. Only stuff that I've learnt since doing the filming back in december.
In fact I don't think I've done those patterns since then, and I was pretty rusty then. Roll on the summer when I can practice all those patterns again.
Enjoy,

hey matt...
the site's sweet man!!
HOP only offer very limited tutorials and i'd say it's especially hard for beginners (or even the rest of us) to trawl through all the old threads looking for the advice they need. to be truthfull i still use it more for the comunity side of things because it's so established but i send ppl here for new moves etc...
your site's easy to navigate, it looks good and the vids are wicked for understanding what people are describing. i'd say i'm more driven to learn stuff and experiment in an attempt to keep up with new moves especially as the vids are so easily acsessible.
i don't think it'd be wrong to put a comprehensive dvd out of tutorial poi moves cos most poi tutorial vids only deal with absolute basics, and poiple want to learn more than that!! think of it as a further contribution to the world of poi and any profit as well deserved for all the hard work you put into this site!
keep it sphercular!
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
this site is really really really nicely designed
and the moves forums have a really nice attitude and lack of ego
my only problem: i can't watch the tutorials because my work pcs they refuse to play any type of video format apart from animated gif (they hate activeX too) :x
having said that, is there the slightest possibility of having small animated gif versions of the videos? i don't know how hard that'd be, but i'm sure i wouldn't be the only one to benefit, as many still browse the internet with old skool teknology that can have problems with videos.

SImian: It's taken 3 months to upload half the videos, at these are only the test videos. So i doubt i'm gonna get round to making little gifs. However there was talk of burning the site onto cd and charging a fiver plus p&p. But then if i release anything I want it to be slick, so I dunno.

add a paypal donate link. i, for one, will donate as soon as i get access to a credit card. i am also a programmer by trade... been writing code since before i could ride a bike, so although i dont know PHP Nuke, id be glad to learn it in order to help. im also planning on running a server in my new apartment, so i could host some videos for you... if you want to host your own, i could provide a home for member video sections. id love to make some tutorials.
oh, and even if you do post every video you make, i would still buy the DVD just for the hi-res version and the convenience of having it archived so i dont need to download the damn things.
opinions on the site? i havent spent this much time on one site in a couple years. ive been up all night working every day recently, and my breaks every couple hours consist of cruising in to check for new posts on the forum. your tutorials are incredible. the only complaint is that on some of the more tricky things to first grasp (such as double thread the needle) i could not figure out what the hell your hands were doing due to the lossy compression... but that cannot really be avoided. overall rating: 9.75
how to get the other .25? more of everything.
i love it.

Cheers sorak,
I've kinda been working bckwards through the tutorials ~ to the easier stuff is still to come. That way You know what to aim for and then you can either work it all out yourself or wait for me to catch up. So I have videos of EVERYTHING in between a basic butterfly and 5 Beat Impossible Weaves. So whilst you maybe aren't ready to go straight in at the deep end, once the other vids are up ~ you'll find it a breeze i'm sure.
Thanks for the support everyone, paypal is a good idea, that way every time I earnt a certain ammount of money I could pull a sicky at work and spend the day uploading vids

skipping work to dedicate days to us.. word.. that's a true admin right there..
I spend countless hours a day on here.. and the days I don't have class, I spend even more lol..
sorak.. if you need the hand motions for a 4bt TTN, hit me up one afternoon on yahoo.. I have a webcam.. the quality is shite.. If I spin you get such a delay between shots that it looks like someone strobed really slowly and stuck all the light parts together.. but... what I can do, as Ihave done for many is take the cam and do a view over the shoulder looking down.. so what you see are your wrists as if looking down on your own.. I can then take and show you the hand motions.. since the quality is shite, I can go relly slow and it comesout smooth.. also means that I'm right there and can answer any questions..

Spherculism is my online and mental home man. I've learned sooo much stuff over just the past like 3 months of being on here (I dont remember when I joined but I had seen the tutorials before joining so). First introduced to tosses here, which I've been hooked on ever since...definitally the most satisfying stuff I've done so far. I've learned funky multi-beat butterflys and fakeys, tosses and under leg patterns, isolations need I go on? Not to mention how much I understand my poi now. I've got a long way to go but before its like "ok they do this movement -starts spinning with eyes closed hoping doesnt get hit-" now its like....well just that, you understand it and you can work out patterns and just feel the pull to know what to do. None of the other sites ever taught you that. Matt, you did a superb job on this place, and I couldn't be more grateful for you putting your time into it and giving us all this knowledge..its incredible man. I love this place because theres no ego (well every now and then a few members'll get all mightier then thou but hey, no ones perfect, still love 'em) anyways yah no ego, its not really a place to come and hang out for the social part but rather hang out and actually benefit from it if ya know what I mean...that is awesome.
If and when you ever make a dvd , I am buying like 20 copies
Seriously though if you ever made one, you've got another customer right here.
Yaah you should put a donate thing up, as soon as I got some money I'll send some
You've certainly earned it.
As for the tutorials- I mostly watch toss tutorials, because well thats what I'm working on right now. Matt=Toss Master....anyways. I dont get why people keep commenting on not being able to understand the tutorials, I've never had a problem with seeing the hand movements. *shrugs* must just be me I guess. The tutorials kick arse, thats all there is to it poiple
The forums are fantastic, I'm learning equally as much in there as I am in the tutorials if not more. Yet again, it's not just teaching a pattern, it's more of teaching you -how- to -learn- the pattern, not just how to do it if you know what I mean. I love that , all the poiple are throwing in their say, all helping each other..unbelievable.
Even if you find people doing your style, you'll still be unique because NO ONE can ever truly grab it. Besides man, you started it, take comfort in that
Haha my mom says to blame you for all the banging on her ceiling in the mornings from poi. She's like "Ever since she found a video of that guy with the hair we hear this THUMP, thump-thu-thump" Take pride in it man

No matter how much you give away to people or feel like your not getting it back, sometimes just doing what helps people whether it helps -you- or not can be the reward in itself, atleast for me. I try and keep up with the forums and put lots of stuff in cause I know its pretty annoying when you got someone here that just sits on their bum all day. Will try and post more
Eek I'll go update my info  I'm starving, I'll prolly post more on this later. :2 and :34 for you all! You have changed the Poi world forever!

I love this site. I just wish that I could free up more time to take full advantage of it. The tutorial vids have been really helpful, even though I've been watching them kinda at random.

I think the link to the boards should say "Community" and not "forums" it just sounds so much nicer, we are a community. That and it I think it sounds more like a place for sharing what we know about poi.

I would agree achluo, except that the community as I see it is more of the entire site, and the forums where we talk?? Although forums is a big and scary word
I always invision myself in a giant mall with nothing but security buzzing around. I have no idea why.

Just a really minor thing which I just thought you might want to know re browser compatibility and the site; the groovy spherculism banner above all the images (with the swirly poi like things) doesn't show in mozilla or its derivatives. I made sure I'd d/l'ed the latest versions of flash and shockwave, but this didn't help.
Its absolutely not a prob or criticism of the site (you know I love it here), just thought it might be something you may want to look at?

Also a lot of the emoticons on the "View more Emoticons" page are just numbered (e.g. :1 is : 1) so when you're trying to post about different ratios for spinning you end up with 1:2 instead of 1 : 2. Any chance of changing some of their codes?
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
hey spiral, when did i become yo bitch???
The codes are that way cos it was quick and easy, i'll change the first few at some point. So are you saying you just get the code and not the image??
¦m¦
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
I've run into the same thing. Since some of the emoticons are just colon-number, you can accidently type in emoticons when you meant to type things like times, ratios, etc.
One thirty-four becomes 1:34
One to two becomes 1:2 (To steal spiral's example)
Five fourty-seven becomes 5:47
And so on. It's something that only comes up once every so often, but it is kinda annoying when it does...
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Wow I have never had that problem. The only thing I can think of as for slight mishaps here, is that not everyones avatar shows up and that 'jump to' button thing never works. Poor matt, being bombarded eh?
Peace y'all
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Jump to forum link definitely doesn't work.
1.34 can be written like this but i agree is ammoying
1 : 2 you just need to put spaces
5.47 looks good to me.
I'll see what i can do.
¦m¦
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
Okay. i just started changing the codes for the emoticons and then realised that i'd have to go and update all the times you poiple have written : 4 for example. So i think we're stuck with them being like this. My fault entirely, i should have put a second colon at the end. Sorry folks but just think how easy it is to display your colonfourness :4

The overly anal nagging spiralx
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
lose ALL the smilies now? or keep the problem forever, you choose. If i change them i reckon instead of :number i'll just do :number: that way we just hve to add another : after a smilie code to get it back.
Or i can change them to things like  if you prefer.
¦m¦
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
It's not all the smilies is it? Just the numbered ones. Add another : at the end I reckon, less hassle than renaming them all
Spherculism ~ Feedback Thread
when you click 'view more emoticons' you get a list of 55 that i added a while back. They are all numbered : 1 to : 55 (minus the space)
SO shall i add the second :
I reckon I may as well.

Matt, I've noticed a few more browser incompatibilities and probs since Spherculism arrived on the new server- I don't really know what these things are caused by, but they weren't a prob prior to the server change so I guess they are pretty minor. If the worst some to worst I'll use IE (Nooooooo!), but it would be great if they could be cleaned up to work in Mozilla and others
First is that i get these script errors
and
appearing immediately below the Spherculism banner and above the toolbar featuring the Forum FAQ, sign out options and the like. They are just a distraction, but it would be nice to get rid of them.
The second is a bit more of a pain- Whilst I can see when there are new posts in the community main page, should I then enter that thread, the sub threads all look as though they are read (ie I get no new post markers)- this means I have to check stuff by date in order to know whats new.
Has anybody else experienced these problems?
If I can be of any help in rectifying or clarifying whats wrong then I let me know.
Thanks again for all your hard work Matt- sorry to add to what I'm sure is already a full todo list
Cheers,
Chut
