Beatz

greetings. the basic idea for this thread is to share our knowlege of music. its an idea thas opn to any suggestions. basically i have come across some amazing music/albums to spin to, and some stuff which im working on for performances. the idea is that this thread could be a list of tracks (not albums) acting as a resource for anyone who is looking for weird and wonderful performance music. or just some tunes they might not have heard. so, heres the suggestion: provide the name of the track, or track number, of the tune(s), (you can always get the name off amazon), what album its from, what artist wrote it, what genre it is, and any other info you feel is required. peace.

Off the top of my head my fave track to spin to is "Synthosaurus" by Paul Maddox. Track 2 of disc one on the album "Resonate 3", Tidy Trax label.

Very swirly, synthy UK hard trance. It has lots of energetic build ups which are good for working up to a frenzy of mad high speed flowing spinning, but also some cool breakbeat breakdowns which are a nice oppurtunity to do some contrasting slow and intricate work.

Psytrance tends to be my usual weapon of choice though. Predictable choice maybe, but I do think that the flowing, sinuous layered patterns of Psy just have an affinity with the geometry and harmony of poi motion. Particularly when you're using glo-balls. Having lots of layers to lock your ears into and work on / between is really satisfying as well. Sphism/gigglesmileySphism/gigglesmiley

A few of my fave Psy spinning tracks, again OTTOMH:

Rinkadink - Syntax and Whiskey (album - Rabbit from Darkside)
Astrix - Monster (Infected Mushroom remix, album - Artcore)
Fractal Glider - Tabla Trek (album - Digital Mandala)
1200 Mics - Ayahuasca (album - 1200 Mics)
Talamasca vs. Skazi - Who touch my base line? (album - Skazi, Most Wanted Presents)

mmm, Psy Sphism/gigglesmileySphism/gigglesmiley

Eeeeexcelent!
Someone started the thread I've been wanting to for ages

My first option would be:
Daybreak blues by Soliptic.
Genre is difficult to say, sort of deep south blues chanting meets really chilled dub... ish?
Repetative beat which I normally don't like, but makes up for it on so many different levels.
And its free! Download it HERE (towards the bottom)

Ampcast is an awesome resource for finding new music :44 found it while searching for Keiretsu (as suggested by fairywithoutwings) Try some Poxfil too on the same site, not neccessarily for spinning but just good music.

Dude, thanks for the ampcast link- am getting a few bits and pieces now and it looks pretty groovy,

merci!

right, just got out of work so i can add a few tunes....
toh-sui, dj krush, album; ki-oku, trip hop mixed with a funky jazz trumpet. nice.
trip like i do, crystal method, album; vegas, dance/techno/electro beats. these guys are the dogs if you like electro stuff. this track has a nice build up although im struggling to put anything concrete to it.
roots control, crooklyn dub consortium, album; vol1; certified dope. this whole album is one of my long time favorites. full of dark dubby slow beats for chilled out spinning. helped me develop plenty of expression.
thanks to those who have posted Sphism/gigglesmiley
peace

Ahh if you like "dark dubby slow beats" have you heard Les-nuits by Nightmares on wax?
Not sure of the album but a MUST HEAR!
Fantastic track Sphism/coolsmiley

the album is car boot soul i think for les nuits. cant remember it if i have heard it tho. will get on the case methinks.

Id just like to mention that psytrance is the worst, hideous fucking shit ever.

I don't know how anyone can tolerate it.

ps-obviously a subjective opinion, obviously some people see some quality in it.. or it wouldn't exist. Don't get all twisted out of shape.

ps-ive been spinning to kraftwerk and some early synth stuff like the tornados telstar (awesome song to spin to IMO) and some bigband and jazz.
Id just like to mention that psytrance is the worst, hideous fucking shit ever...

Yup, with you on that |T|- I used to say I hated opera and country, but then I got into singing, and whilst I don't a) have the voice for opera (though I have sung a principle part in one once) b) I don't listen to much its become clear that at its best it is incredible music.

Country however... ick!

:55

country has good stuff. Namely Johny Cash.

I prefer to play my own music, or play with my friends, theres a great load of emotion and feeling that goes into jazz/blues/funk music played by us kids today, im frankly amazed by the sounds created by my music A-level class, they can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, its really powerful. Also has a nice beat to spin to Sphism/winksmiley

wah. just discovered big bud. greeeeet ambient d n b. infinity plus infinity is a blinding album

been spinning ALOT to flamenco at the moment. orchestral stuff and the like. very similar to classical in terms of trying to represent different parts of the music with the poi. i remember matt saying something about spinning with a classical pianist and it being interesting. makes a change from electro stuff. also ive been sppinning to the little death orchestra whose first album has a great first track with fat atmosphere.

Great thread, spinning to different styles of music is great fun.

Jonny Cash rrules but i never spun to his tunes before. Fiddley Dee irish folk music does it for me, gets me bouncing all over the place.

That time spinning with a classical pianist was at a crazy mansion party. This super hot chick happend to be an increadible pianist and i was having a great time spinning to her music in this crazy mansion. After about half an hour she finished and this old guy turned to me and said "That was wonderful, how long have you been practicing together?" Obviously i was totally stoked because not only had i never met the girl before but i had never heard the music before either, but i definitely had my groove on that night.

There's a lot of bad psytrance out there, as with any type of music. Spinning to Shpongle is a dream. The structure of the music is so dynamic and has lots of little spinny bits around the edges. Definitely get some shpongle(first 2 albums are sweet), halucinogen (In Dub album is great), if you fancy something a little harder then GMS is where it's at for me. You may not like those 3 groups but i think you will agree that they are not rubbish because they are obviously all phenomenally tallented.

I was never into hiphop but went to a mates party and he had a badass hiphop dj. I had no poi on me and spent the whole night pretending i could bodypop. Sent my poi style off on a complete tangent once i began integrating simple bodypoppin stuff.

Listen, I need to get a load of music for this dvd that we're bringing out later theis year. But it's been a huge stumbling block for me because music just isn't my strong point. If any of you wanna help the site out massively you could find some great tunes to spin to. I don't have the money for massive royalties but we're going to try to do profit sharing once it's released. The main bonus is that the musicians will recieve a professionally edited music video for their track with loads of circusy people in it.

Any ideas?

matt

Just to be different I spin mostly to Hip Hop (mostly Bootlegs or Turntablist stuff) or DnB when at home and Ska or even Nu Metal (though music with guitars in still scares me a little bit) when I'm in clubs.

From the point of view of usable music (though doubtless personal taste will factor somewhat)
http://www.josh-console.co.uk/hiddenglitz/cry.on.my.console.16.deathstarshit.mp3 is a fantastic tune and also a bootleg so I doubt there'd be any issues using it.

http://www.mcsleazy.net/basementboys/03%20-%20basement%20boys%20-%20intergalactic%20camberskank%20(mcsleazy%20bootleg).mp3 is good one too, as well as most of the stuff at http://www.mcsleazy.net

I'll also speak to some musical friends of mine and see if they can produce anything spinnable, I know I've got at least one mate who, if I can talk him away from Industrial Noise  would be well up for it.

I mostly spin to a wide vairety of stuff.. . I've got some cool sets from various genres that I've been listening to lately.. in particular, my firend spam did an awesome DnB set, I'm not one for DnB but spam is known for mixing some pretty.. he's theonly person I know that can go from the transformers theme song into total eclipse of the heart.. and make it work.. LMMFAO..

unfortunately the set I like most was recorded from a live show he did on college radio.. so the quality is ass.. but it rocks none the less..

Anyone tried spinning to Classical Japanese koto and shakuhachi music?

Anyone?

Well I like it Sphism/coolsmiley

no but i heard some of that stuff and its crazy! is it the one with lodas of drums and wood blocks and stuff? they do like 2 hour concerts of mad rhythms, loads a people all iin time?

Erm, no. Sphism/winksmiley
That sounds more like kodo drumming, also very cool.
This is more minimalist and generally has one or two instruments and maybe a woman singing.

and long periods

of silence.

Sphism/coolsmiley

I spin to a large variety of music. Infact nearly every kind I can think of.

Some excellant music is Atylantos for spinning. That and Aria, some Paul Schwartz, one or two tracks of Loreena Mckennitt. Unbelievable beats on a couple songs. Very moving.

Bob Marley is always a joy to spin to, such chilled, fun beats. Great especially for integrating newly learned moves to your dancy spinning.

The Younger Brother-Flock of beeps-Magic Monkey Juice
(That's: artist-album-track for the confused)

Yes OK it's a bit psy-trancey but it's damn good.

Whatever happened to MagicMonkey anyway?

you must find and listen to the cinematic orchestra or i will hunt you down and play it outside you house at unsociable hours

by the way that size 24 was a mistake, they are just the cinematic orchestra. but they are mighty good and they have a really cool dvd called man with a movie camera
peace

Yeah Cinematic Orchestra are very good, never spun to them though.
Slightly tangentially (word?) ever heard Peace Orchestra? (Peter Kruder of Kruder+Dorfmeister) Also Very good, dark, dubby stuff.

Incidentally, feel free to hunt me down and play good music outside my house at unsociable hours. That's the best time I find.

PENPUSHERS
easily the best stuff out of the uk ive heard in a long time. but ive never heard of them.... which is odd. very dark beats with some original rapping and stuff. not really poi orientated but its sooooo good....
and yea man, all the k and d stuff is well good. their label mix is also amazing - gstone.

dear sweet lord the new prodigy album; always outnumbered never outgunned..... ohhhhh. anyone any thoughts?

Not heard it, any good? There seem to be very mixed reviews about it, some saying it sounds very eighties :24 That alone makes me want to avoid it.

Instead:
Check out O N - Untitled 3! (Not sure how long the link will be active)
It's not often you find a really good track with lyrics like "twisting turning burning, circles in the air..." Sphism/gigglesmiley
From this page.
Found it when looking for 'Boards of Canada' stuff.

Also check out: Mr Projectile - Sinking. My best find of the past 6 Months!

Matt; have you been listening to these tracks with a view to putting them on the DVD? It's possible that the copyright/royalty issue isn't too much of a problem.
A guy called Caedmon Mullin has recently put together a climbing video with the best soundtrack I've heard on any activity related video, possibly even any film!(Boards of canada/Prefuse73/Loads of others that I can't remember).
He runs a climbing website:
bigpebbles.co.uk
It might be worth dropping him a line to ask what he did about it. Or I could do it if you prefer? He's a very friendly bloke. Sphism/smilesmiley
One thing he did was to have a section of the DVD (Like an 'Extras' section) devoted entirely to the music info. This might be a good selling point to the artists and is just a really good idea anyway.
Just a thought. Sphism/gigglesmiley
I could send you a copy of that DVD too if you like.

ok, a few recommendations
Squarepusher for some crazy messed up mathematical beats, he does do the odd tune that's like really lovely IDandB
Quantic, Bonobo: these guys do fantastic chillout
Photek: fairly minimalist DnB particularly 'Ni ten ichi ryu' for purity of beats ( i think that's the right name)
Quantic Soul Orchestra: funky shiznit
Red Snapper: just good
DJ Format: Some real funky Hip Hop beats, specially when coupled with the amazing lyrical talents of Abdominal
Yann Thiersen: 'comptine d'un autre ete' from the Amelie soundtrack - beautiful
Banco de Gaia: awesome tribal beats
Gotan Project: Latin music with a hip hop beat. mmmmmm....

I agree, squarepusher is fantastic to spin to, check out his stuff at warprecords.com
Some of the stuff i spin to is...
Aphex Twin - Cornish acid. It's very chilled out and allows you to be a little more creative as to how fast you want to spin.
Pendulum - Voyager. Actually dnb gigs/raves are imo some of the best places to spin poi.
Rage against the machine's stuff is good to poi to as well.

I was referred to Lamb by Durbs- I finally downloaded an album (the one with Gorecki on it) and its absolutel brilliant to spin too- moody, beaty atmospheric and chilled all in one.
