Hey Everyone,
I just found this website today hoping to find some tips on spinning. I'm just a newbie to poi, but I've always been fascinated by poi and staff spinners ever since I first saw a girl spinning at a party I went to. Now I've been attempting to learn half heartedly at partys' and festivals I've gone to for the past 3 years. Long story short, I've finally bought my own set of poi on Feb 19th and have been playing with them almost every day since. (Inside since it's too cold outside) I'm getting the hang of it but I can't do a simple weave... without hitting myself somewhere. Might just be because I'm inside and scared I'll break stuff but I think it's more my timing.
I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada, so if there's anyone from the area that wants to teach or help me out a bit that would be awsome.

Hey there, welcome to the site! I'm pretty sure there are spinners in your area, but not being from around there you'd have to ask someone closer!
Oh, and what's your favourite colour?
Greetings From Canada
Well I don't really like to tie myself down to one color. but I'd have to say probably orange. something bright.

Yay for orange .. tigers are orange. Deer are orange. Clemantines are orange. Sunsets are orange. My favourite colour .. if you hadn't guessed!
If you're hitting yourself with the weave then you're nearly there! Keep practising 'cos very soon it will click and your weave will be perfect! Check out Matt's vid's on this site. If you can see someone do the move you are learning then it's easier to work out for yourself what you're trying to do. (did that make sense to anyone but me?!)
I'm not technical at all; some people reckon this site is for technical poi headz only. Well I'm a poi enthusiast but images/vids work for me instead of hugely descriptive wordy poi lessons.
Oh and loads of practise!
Glad you're hooked on playin poi everyday. That's the spirit! Poi is soooooo addictive! And soon enough you'll have a bunch of moves to show for your efforts, however bruising or fustrating!

Yea I finally figured out the 2 beat weave today and the butterfly!
WHOO!! but then I tried the 3 beat weave again... I think my hands forget what I want them to do. I decided to stop for a while today with a headache and a pair of sore boys. I'll get back to it a bit later on though. It's sunny out today so I might get to go outside

Yea, they are my favorite too. well I think wraps and tangles are awsome too, but those are WAY WAY above me at the moment. Plus my poi have linked cords so I don't think they wrap or tangle very good.

Welcome! Great start on the weaves, one day they'll seem really easy (like when you're learning tangles
).

I hope so, cause right now they are extremely tricky. I've hit myself in places I need 3 mirrors to see. But it's still fun and by August I hope to be ready to try fire. that's my goal right now, if it doesn't happen that's fine though.

ok so after 3 days of trying the 3 beat weave I still can't do it... I've watched the videos and understand how to do it, but I can't put it into practice. Just wondering if anyone has a way to trick myself into learning it. I can do it with each hand but once I try to bring them together with both i either get the cord wrapped around my hand on beat 2 or I whack myself in the knee on beat 3 bringing it back.

Try to imagine your hands are on a steering wheel which you are turning from where your left hand is crossed over on top of your right all the way back over to where your right hand is crossed over on top of the left

welcme. about the knee problem, might be a matter of how you orientate your body in relation to the poi. if you turn to the side as you bring the poi over might be a help. may the force be with you.
peace

I think I finally fooled myself into learning the three beat weave, except sometimes I think I only do a two beat some of the time. either way I'm getting the hang of it.
