Poi Lengths

Ok... any thoughts on what the ideal length of poi should be?

obviously the longer the poi, the bigger the circles. But some moves (buzzsaw for example) require much shorter poi.
so far im messing about with longer than normal poi (ie longer than from my hand to my arm, the measurement suggested on HOPsite) for impressive big weaves/butterflys, and then wrapping around my hands to shorten them for other moves.
anyone else do this, or is it just me?

final thought: how long is too long?

My poi reach almost to my shoulder when I'm holding them which is good for most stuff but I find I need to shortern them when doing a lot of inverted stuff - usually by wrapping the body around 3/4 fingers. But I think if you're not doing that then they can be pretty long. I've spun six foot poi before and it was doable if silly! Sphism/winksmiley

length makes the poi spin slower and makes certain motions easier.. (utl, btb, sj's, crossers,)

shorter poi spin faster, but make mobility easier.. thus you can transition quicker easier and have a wider range of motions..

mine are probably about an 1" past my elbow..

Stand on your tiptoes... Reach your hands up... Higher than that... Stretch your fingers... Go on, really stretch them... If your poi touch the floor, they are too long.

damn i knew there was something i was doing wrong ^_^

Mine use to come from my hand to the other side of my neck, kind of long, had to shorten them though since there wasn't enough room to spin them in my bedroom. Made alot of stuff easier though since they moved so slow.

Rev, those are really short poi, gotta play around with that later.

I like the ratio...

iso = half poi string
poi string= half arm length

its perfect for patterns using concentric circles.
