5 year old rookie?

Yes, it's possible.

I picked up my self-made, tennis-ball poi in the summer of 2001 for the first time after seeing glowsticker badly whop himself at a party. Once I found the HomeOfPoi.com, I learned the basics pretty quickly and made the transition to fire.

However

I have since learned that you HAVE to have both practice and burn sessions. Since that first explosion of creativity, I have let real life creep back in. While many burn sessions have taken place, very few true practice sessions have. I'm still plagued with inflexible shoulders (working on that right now), and I have yet to win the btb forward weave. Got the backward one Sphism/smilesmiley

Sooooo, I'm doing my wild talent much dishonor to not push it -- but I haven't been inspired to spin much lately. That's what I'm looking for here, to find some people in my area (DFW, TX, USA), or failing that, some ideas or exercises to limber up my brain and body.

Cuz being a 5 year veteran with a relatively low skill level is lame. Not that I want to do the hyperloop triple backflip somersault firebreath cannonshot ninja death wrap of doom, but I LOVE to dance. Body movement within your fire cocoon is paramount -- but lately I've been constrained with my poi b/c I've reached my limits.

Time to push 'em!

I can only post from work, so I'll holler atchall in the forums later. Addiditonally, is there any way we can download the videos? Can't view those b/c of firewalls -- a necessary security measure in engr/design.

ciao

Hello there and welcome, and good luck in learning new stuff! Sphism/gigglesmiley

Not sure about spinners where you are - I know there are spinners in Austin but I've no idea whether that's anywhere near you at all!

Hello, glad you made it here.

Thats a shame about your shoulders. I used to get bad shoulder pain after practicing btb stuff.

Pm me and i may be able to help you out with the downloads problem, there's usually a way round these things.

Thanks for writing a nice intro, it's really good to get a clear idea of where people are at with there poi and a bit of background.

So what kind of moves do you do at the moment? Maybe we can suggest a few areas you might wanna look at.

The main things i would suggest is gradually building up through the weave and butterfly patterns (1 beat, 2 beat, 3 beat, 4 beat, 5 beat)

Practice both directions

Experiment different positions you can spin the patterns in, high, low, behind the head, behind the back, under the leg, around you neck, anywhere.

See if you can work out how to turn from forward to backward and back again in various ways, and from once position to an other.

Play with standing facing the poi or side on to the poi, i.e practice different patterns in various planes.

Practice listening to different styles of music and try to keep time with them as precisely as possible. I like to visualise the sound and imagine that my poi are following the sames around me. Find what suits you best.

Remeber to smile.

¦m¦

hey, thanks for the welcome!!

for unstretchy shoulders, um....STRETCH!! And build up rotator cuffs so they're not crunchy. That might work...

what do I do at the moment?

let's see:

2,3,4,5 beat weaves
3 bt btb weave
single beat ttn
mexican wave
some reels
hi/lo/tuck turns
btb butterfly (again, 1 direction)
among others

I know I'm not going to improve until I can butterfly equally well, in either direction, with EITHER hand on top. Strongest is right hand on top outwards butterfly. Then left hand on top outwards. My reverse butterfly is an atrocious IQ-lessener, no matter the leading hand.

I probably need music -- i do most of my spinning outside with no tunes. music always eases the heart.

thanks, and check your PMs!

HI Sphism/smilesmiley

Hiya. Sphism/smilesmiley

You're like the opposite of me. I usually practice inside with music. I should spin outside more, though. Some things just don't work indoors. (That and there's so much pretty stuff outside. Sphism/gigglesmiley )

Good luck with the butterfies. And the shoulders. How does one build up rotator cuffs?

Hello and welcome!!! Sphism/smilesmiley
